A research-focused national public health organization, SAAPHI is dedicated to improving the overall health of African Americans through the following goals:
* assisting the development of a well-defined research agenda for improving the health of African Americans;
* promoting the utilization of appropriate data and research methods for the development of health policy decisions and programs related to the health of African Americans;
* increasing public awareness of health problems of African Americans and possible solutions through the dissemination of empirically based information and education;
* increasing the numbers of African Americans completing training in epidemiology, biostatistics, and other quantitative disciplines of public health that contribute to research;
* fostering coalitions with other professional organizations having similar goals;
* assisting in the coordination of investigative, educational or public health related program planning efforts that may have an impact on the health of African Americans.
