Hello all:

First off, sorry for being AWOL. My grandfather was quite sick for
the past couple of months and passed away a couple weeks ago. He
had a great, long life, and given his recent decline, I believe, is
in a better place. However, I have been quite busy with family
stuff.

The letter looks great, thank you Kristen and all who contributed to
it. I feel a little awkward signing it, since I didn't really
contribute to its writing, and I hate to give the appearance of
taking credit for our team efforts. But it may be difficult for all
of us to sign it (space wise, if not technologically). If you all
feel its better for one of us to sign it, rather than having the
letter be unsigned, I would be honored to do it. But if anyone else
locally would like to, please let me know. Missy? Laura? Jen Beers?

Hope all is well with everyone,

Jason

I put the site on my credit card. I felt better owning it rather than
giving the control to geneseo. The site is linked to the Geneseo
Foundation.

Holy shit, Missy. The site is gorgeous. So so so so so so well done -
intuitively set up, primarily pink without being little-girly and full
of great info way beyond the average bio site.

Please thank Chuck. This is so great.

alright...it's not quite done, but take a look and give me your
feedback on the site. Two sections aren't finished yet (the biography
section and the share your memories (it will be a blog type 'o
thing)). Ignore those sections but take a look at everything else.
I'm aware that there is a typo on the fun fact about skipping (in not

Ditto what the Swen said…fantabulous job, Missy!  One question:  Are we currently paying to have this hosted and is the paged going to be able to be linked to the Geneseo site?  (actually, that was two questions…me not so good at the math).  If we are paying to host, please let me know how much it is ‘cause I’d like to contribute to the cause.  Again, good job!

So I am working on this bio and am not sure how detailed or not to make
it. So, if everyone would do me a favor and give me dates/events that
they feel are important, I would appreciate that. Then when it's done
we can also add or cut as necessary.

Jen (and everybody)!

(Putting dork hat on) I don't think we need the "us," since "join" on its own can imply "join us," "join together," "join each other," etc.  I'll check my Diana Hacker book (the writing bible) just to make sure though.

Rocktastic.

Kristen, everything you touch turns to gold. I love you. Great job.
As for the Jen thing, we had decide to name Jack Jack partially because we thought it was an uncommon name, not like the Jennifer and Jason that we are.  The top 10 list of names for 2005 has Jack as number 8.  Good job Jen and Jay, that worked!
Let me know what Kim says.

Hey guys,

I think, in regard to the signature, I'm going to submit everyone's
names and see what Kim says. She'll be able to best advise from
there.

Carrie - I made a slight change to that sentence, based on your
recommendation. You were right - "subsequently" is a crap word.
Must ... stop ... overusing ...

The final version of the letter is posted below. Jason, if it's
cool with you, I'll send to Kim on Friday with the question about
our names included.

Love,

Mr. John Doe
123 Street

We write to you as alumni of Geneseo and dear friends of the late
Lisa Kuligowski, Class of 1998. Lisa passed away on October 14,
2004, as a result of a tragic car crash, cutting short the bright
future of an extraordinary and deeply loved person. We invite you
to join in establishing a lasting memorial in her name.

Though she was never happier than when surrounded by family and
friends, Lisa embraced opportunities to travel, explore and help
others in need. This curiosity and compassion, combined with an
easy-going personality and ever-present laugh, made her a beloved
member of the SUNY Geneseo community, as well as a cherished
friend.

Lisa excelled in Geography and Planning, and during her time in
college, acted as President of the Geography Club. Due to these
bonds and experiences, and as a means of honoring her life, we are
creating the Lisa Kuligowski Memorial Geography Fund at SUNY
Geneseo. Once endowed, this award will provide a scholarship for a
Geography student going on to graduate school, as well as resources
for Geography departmental programs at Geneseo to continue and
flourish.

We ask you to accompany us in our effort to establish Lisa's
memorial fund by making a contribution in her name towards our goal
of $10,000. This would create a permanent endowment at SUNY
Geneseo. Scholarships and departmental funding would then be paid
from the income earned on the account, the principal would remain
intact, and the Lisa Kuligowski Memorial Geography Fund would exist
in perpetuity.

Please join us and the Geneseo Foundation in helping raise $10,000
to create a lasting memorial for Lisa. A gift card and reply
envelope are attached, and we invite you to visit the Lisa
Kuligowski Memorial Geography Fund website at (web address will be
listed here). If you should have any questions, or would like

Jen P.,
It would be great if you could write a bio.  I'd like to get it on the website within a couple of weeks so that I can let everyone see it before its finalized.

Adam,
Thanks for all your thoughts and good wishes.  I'm having a friend help with the website but I would appreciate your insight.  Perhaps we can meet next week sometime so that I can show it to you.

Everyone,
The website is coming along.  As soon as it is up, I will forward the address so everyone can take a look at it.   I decided against getting a website through geneseo.  I kind of just wanted it to be ours and not the college's.  I don't know if that makes sense, but I went ahead and made that decision.  I hope everyone agrees.  In the meantime, please continue to email me your ideas or fun Lisa stories!

Jen, you present a good idea. Having some names on the letter certainly
makes it more personal, but having a gaggle of names might seem unruly. I
think the website that you are designing is a more appropriate place to list
everyones names who have helped in this effort and/or have had their lives
enriched by knowing Lisa.

That being said, here is a half-assed stab at making it personal while
acknowledging the group effort:

Heather Fuentes, Missy Morales, and the rest of the Court (?) Street "gang"
Jason Haremza and fellow Geography graduates
[This short list is not meant to exclude anyone, please feel free to
enhance]

Or more encompassing, Friends of Lisa.

Of course, Kim's input would be very helpful on what is the best tactic for
garnering support from alums so we can establish this scholarship fund to
memorialize Lisa.

Terrific job, I don't think it couldn't have been done better by anyone.
It
is heartwarming and classy.
If I remember correctly, I think Kim said something about having too many
names on the letter. We should include all the names on the draft we send
her
but should have some sort of group name and one lead person in case she says
something. Does any one else remember her saying that? Any group names idea?

Hey, Kris...great job on the letter.

I'm going to start on the website this weekend. I'm hoping to include pics,
a bio, a description of the fund, Lisa fun facts, links to favorite Lisa
things, music, link to the geneseo foundation and a guest book/memory page.

I've got a couple questions for the group...if you could respond ASAP it
would be helpful so I can get starte.

1) Is someone willing to write a comprehensive bio? I feel overwhelmed by
this.

2) Give me some funny Lisa "fun facts". This will be a portion of the site
dedicated to funny Lisa memories (ex: How many pink cardigans did Lisa
really own?)

3) Name some bands or other interests Lisa had (ex. U2 and the Sabres)

I figure if we all put our input into this it will reflect what we all
remember of her.

If you have any other suggestions or things you would like me to include,
please let me know.

Missy

Hey Guys,

How are y'all? Hope everybody had a good holiday, and
Santa/Hannukah Harry/Kwanzaa Guy brought you everything you wished
for.

Attached below is the 2nd draft (Kim having written #1) of the Lisa
letter. Kim provided a great outline, and I tried to do three
additional things:

1. Nail down Lisa's qualities, without getting too specific. (Her
job allowed her to help a great many people, so I think that part of
Kim's statement definitely stands.)

2. Simplify some of the funding points. Please let me know if
they're confusing, and if we'd rather go back to Kim's wording.

3. Vary up the vocabulary.

Also, a few quick questions:

1. I highlighted the word "income." Should that be "interest"
or "income," or do they pretty much mean the same thing?
Semantics...

2. Do we want to include our last names? I slugged 'em in there,
just because it seemed appropriate.

3. Should "Geography," as in "Geography department" be capitalized?
I figured yes, because we did with my major. Then again, I majored
in Communication, and we ain't so good with readin' and writin'.

That said ... here it is. Sorry for the novel of a preamble. Love
you all, and let me know what you think/what could be changed.

Hearts,
Kristen

Subsequently, as
a means of honoring her life, we are creating the Lisa Kuligowski
Memorial Geography Fund at SUNY Geneseo. Once endowed, this award
will provide a scholarship for a Geography student going on to
graduate school, as well as resources for Geography departmental
programs at Geneseo to continue and flourish.

If you should have any questions, or would like
additional information, please contact Kim Faber, Major and Planned
Gifts Officer, Geneseo Foundation at (585) 245-5077.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

Hope everyone had a great New Year's! I sent Kim a list of some
people to add into the database for the first round of letters to be
sent. I also went ahead and let her know that we were reviewing the
letter communally. Has anyone put some thought into items for the web
design? Does that need to be in place before the letters go out?

Thanks!

Carrie

Hey Guys,

More exciting responses ...

1. Car crash v. car accident: this is a great point, Jen.  It wasn't an accident, and I don't think we should phrase it as such.  Does anyone object to this wording?

2. Jen - I will definitely add that Geography sentence.  Good call, and thank you.

3. Sorry about the name confusion, everybody.  I used the signatures Kim included in her initial letter (the folks at the dinner).  How about we put all ten of us in, submit it to Kim, and if she thinks it's too much, we'll devise some kind of all-encompassing alternative?

I'll leave this version of the letter up for a few more days (until January 4th?) so everyone can get a gander. At that point, I'll rewrite (suggestions included) and resubmit a second draft.  Jason, maybe you can take it from there?  Let me know if that idea blows.

Hope y'all have a mantastic New Year.  Don't go easy on the champagne.

Love,

Kristen

Nice job on this, Kristen.  It sounds great.  Who is included in the "from" part of the letter?  Is it those of you who were at the meeting with Kim?  Just wondering.  I know Jen and I will be soliciting donations from Lisa's Buffalo contacts, so I'm wondering if we should be included, as well.

I have not read the original from Kim yet, but I do have a few comments:

1. Geography should be capitalized, good catch.

2. I think we should be specific about the scholarship - as in is it really
intended to go to only those Geography graduates intending to pursue
Planning as a vocation ... or go on to grad school specifically intending to
study Planning?

3. I am not sure if income and interest are the same thing, but I would
stick with the wording chosen by Kim since she is most familiar with how the
"account" works.  Not to mention, based on other similar memorial funds, I
think they anticipate that we continue to solicit donations even past the
requisite $10,000 is reached.

4. Two names were left out of the "From List" - Jennifer Norton and Carrie
Kaufman Landgraf.

Thanks for giving this a first pass Kristen!  I might add some more later
when I read through Kim's outline.

Hey Carrie,

In response...

2. I think it's a grad-school only thingy.  That would definitely be a good Kim question.

3. Income it is.

4. I'm an idiot.  Sorry about that.

Happy New Year, folks!

I am so sorry for being out of touch about this!

Kristen- Thank you so much for drafting such a beautiful letter. I agree
with Carrie that 'interest' should be used instead of 'income'.

I have some suggested edits, but these are just suggestions, please do
not feel obligated to include them.

1) How do people feel about using the term 'car crash' instead of 'car
accident' (sorry, it's a public health thing...)

2) Do you think it's helpful to add a sentence or two that provides some
background as to why the fund is being established in Geography? I was
thinking we could add a sentence in the second paragraph after
'...cherished friend' and before 'As a means...' that says something like:
"During her time at Geneseo, Lisa was more than just a student. Lisa
exhibited leadership as President of the Geography Club and was always
willing to help fellow geography students with class projects and
homework assignments."
Jason and Carrie- you were there when Lisa was president, do you have
other ideas?

3) Signing of names: personally it does not matter to me if my name is
on the letter or not- as long as the letter goes out!

Also, Carrie asked a while ago if other geog faculty should receive the
letter- (again, sorry for the delayed response) and I think we should
send it to as many people as possible and let them decide whether or not
they would like to make a donation.

Thanks again to everyone for your part in making this idea a reality.

Please let me know how I can help with the website.

Happy New Year!

-Jenn Norton

Nice job on this, Kristen.  It sounds great.  Who is included in the "from" part of the letter?  Is it those of you who were at the meeting with Kim?  Just wondering.  I know Jen and I will be soliciting donations from Lisa's Buffalo contacts, so I'm wondering if we should be included, as well.

Hearts,
Kristen

We write to you as alumni of Geneseo and dear friends of the late
Lisa Kuligowski, Class of 1998. Lisa passed away on October 14,
2004, as a result of a tragic car accident, cutting short the bright
future of an extraordinary and deeply loved person. We invite you
to join in establishing a lasting memorial in her name.

Though Lisa was never happier than when surrounded by family and
friends, she embraced opportunities to travel, explore and help
others in need. These outstanding qualities, combined with an easy-
going personality and ever-present laugh, made her a beloved member
of the Geneseo community, as well as a cherished friend. As a means
of honoring her life, we are creating the Lisa Kuligowski Memorial
Geography Fund at SUNY Geneseo. Once endowed, this award will
provide a scholarship for a Geography student going on to graduate
school, as well as resources for Geography departmental programs at
Geneseo to continue and flourish.

If you should have any questions, or would like
additional information, please contact Kim Faber, Major and Planned
Gifts Officer, Geneseo Foundation at (585) 245-5077.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

Sincerely,

I agree with Jason, let's see what VH1's finest has to offer before doing anything else.  I think Kim's version is pretty good, we just need to tweak the Lisa specifics.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyful Kwanzaa and a Happy New Year to you all.

Happy Holidays everyone!

I looked at Kim's draft letter today (I know, I've been sitting on it
for almost a month). It seemed like a great start. Given Kristen's
posting below, to avoid having too many versions of the letter
floating around, and of course her great writing skills, I was going
to wait to see what she passes around and we can all take a look at
that.

Maybe we can shoot for a second-third week of January to get a final
version to Kim?

Best wishes,

Jason

Hi Everybody,

I started on the letter tonight, and am going to take another day or
so to look at it. Will pass a draft back to everyone shortly
thereafter.

Love,
Kristen
