I am not sure how many of you are still getting this and what not but if you know that one of us hasn't gotten it, please forward it on.
The Class of '98 reunion is rapidly approaching. For those of you who are planning to go (and I do hope that is all of you, even if you weren't from '98!!) please book a room now. Jay and I couldn't find a simple think on Main Street and we are staying at the Quality Inn (old Days Inn).
I was also thinking that this would be a good time to do some more Lisa fundraising. I wanted to talk with you guys on how to approach Geneseo about doing something and what we should do. Any thoughts?
Hello everyone,
It has been a while since we all touched base so I figured I would send
out an email.
First of all, I hope everyone had a good holiday and the New Year has
started off on the right foot.
Second, I wanted to see if anyone (Jason?) had an updates on what was
happening in Geneseo. I had a "Lisa Dream" last night and felt the
need to make sure all was still going well.
Anyway, I hope everyone is well and I look forward to hearing from you.
Jen
I kind of liked the Corian plaque... I definitely think we should
stay away from the cheesy "brass and polished wood" traditional
little league plaque that Kristen mentioned. We all know Lisa
would make fun of it : )
The bass compass is cool, but seems like more of an outside type
marker. Also its not apparent what it's for unless you get up close
and actually read the words around the edge. Might be hard to do if
its hanging on the wall in the cart lab. On the other hand, I
really like the concept and symbolism of a compass.
I was thinking something with Lisa's photo on it would be good.
I definitely think whatever we chose, it has to be affixed to the
wall somehow. A table top plaque would be too easy to misplace or
move or lose.
Anyway, those are my 2 cents. Thanks for the thank you's Missy,
they look great. I had a minor thought on those... maybe we should
all try to buy "love" stamps to use when we mail them?

Missy,
I received the thank you cards today. They look wonderful! Thanks
for taking care of that. Do you need any money for the printing
costs? Would be happy to contribute.

I like examples shown in both the internationalbronze and memorymarkers

Thanks for the preliminary research.

no problem buying 12 stamps!
-Carrie
Expect the thank you notes this week. I figure we can all buy stamps ouselves. It is only 12 cards so the expense won't be painful. If we could make a plan to get them out by mid-October...it would be great.
Thanks so much for scouting these. I like the compass one, and the "Linda Thompson" example from Link #2. Short and classy.
I might stay away from plaques like the examples in Link #1. I worked in a trophy shop for awhile, and those guys tend to have wood/cork backs covered by plastic veneers. They'll go to pot early, a la that Little League Most Improved award you got in 1987 (um ... maybe that's just me). I'm thinkin' the bronze ones would look better and last longer.
Again, way to go with this. Hope y'all are doing well.
Love, Kristen
"Would I rather be feared or loved? Um ... Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."
I've been looking on-line to see some options for the plaque that will be displayed in the Cart/GIS lab in Fraser Hall. There are SO many options!
There are some basic decisions we need to come to a consensus on like: - type of material (acryllic, wood, bronze, other) - with or without photo - wall mounted or tabletop - engraving
I found prices that ran from as low as $20 to over $600. I think our initial plan was to spend ~$150?
Here are some examples of what's out there- please share your opinion!

Hi!
Sorry I was so out of touch for a while! Moving was crazy- but I am
finally back in NY and pretty much set up in my parents house on Long
Island.
Thanks to everyone for sending your thank you requests. I have modified
the file and sent a copy to Missy so she can distribute with the actual
notes.
I think I got all of the requests right and then I just randomly
assigned until we each had ~12 names.
I also added some names to the spring contact list. Great idea Jen
about adding names to the list! If anyone has other names/addresses,
please send them to me and I'll add them. Do you we know when
Kim/Geneseo Fund needs this list?
I'll also start looking into plaque options and will send info along soon.
-Jenn Norton
Ditto... once everyone claims their thank yous, I am very willing to
write more. Maybe we should pick a deadline and after that Jenn
Norton can assign the unclaimed people who need thank yous?

Just wanted everyone to see the email I got from Ren regarding
changing the name of GEOG 375...
"The geography faculty are grateful for your committee's work on
supporting the field experience course through the Lisa K. fund. We
will start the paperwork for a name change soon. There is a chance
that the dean's office or the undergraduate curriculum committee or
the college senate will not approve this name (LMK Memorial Field
Experience sounds good). If that happens, then we will refer to the
class as LMK... even though it would not appear in the catalog that
way. I hope that it won't come to that, but bureacracy being what it
is, we never know what kind of objections will come along. I just
wanted to let you all cross your fingers on this one."
I offered to present before any committee that is necessary to help
convince them of the name change, if need be. So should that
happen, anyone, local or national, is welcome to present with me.
Have a great long weekend everyone!
Jason
I will do the Nocera, Houghtaling, Slotnicks and Kevin Kuligowski. Plus, we will take any of the other ones that no one has claimed when it is all said and done.
As far as the Spring donor list, is it possible to add names to it? Names that Jay and I contributed to the list last year never made it one (like our families) and there are people we know would donate. Let me know and I will email as list.
I put my name next to a couple of more people who were not taken on the thank-you list. I don't mind doing many more-I was just waiting to see if the rest of you really wanted to do the people that you knew the best. I don't think everyone has seen the list yet, so after everyone has, I can do many more of the ones that were unaccounted for.

Okay, I'm going to try to summarize our meeting yesterday:
In attendance: Missy, Heather, Laura, Jenn Norton, Jason H, Ren, Kim
We have raised $15,780 from 136 donors. 63 are friends, 58 alums (of which 40 are Geography alums), 10 are parents, 3 corporate (including 1 matching), 1 alum/parent, and 1 faculty.
We agreed to continue fundraising, and Kim asked us to look at the list of donors to see if there are any people we know (i.e. parents, family, etc.) who we would not want to be contacted again. Jenn Norton is coordinating this list.
At this point we need to tell Kim how much to place in the endowed account so it can begin earning interest and how much to "keep out" to use for thank yous, a plaque, and the award given in the Spring of '07, since the endowed account won't raise enough interest to give out until a year from now. We are proposing to tell Kim to put $14,000 in the endowed account and keep out $1,780. We can always put more into the endowed account but cannot ever take out of it.
Kim suggested, and we liked the idea, of a Fall mini-newsletter to donors to update them on the fund. It's nice to get something that tells you what your money is going for. The Geneseo Foundation can print and mail this, all we need to do is supply the copy. We agreed to keep this separate from the thank you notes we will be mailing, just to make things easier.
We agreed to continue fundraising and set a goal for next year of reaching the $20,000-$25,000 mark (I was unclear on where we settled). Ultimately, within the next 5 years, we set a goal of reaching $50,000.
We can give out 5% annually; Kim is looking into whether we can give out 4% annually and use 1% to put back into the principle, so even if we reach a point where we no longer do fund raising, the pot continues to grow.
Ren suggested, and we all reached consensus on, that we use the Lisa Kuligowski Memorial Award to fund a class rather than give the money to a single student. GEOG 375 - Field Experience is a required class for all Geography majors. It's a 1 credit class given every semester in which the faculty choses a location (generally within a day's drive) and the 10-12 students in the class research geography topics about this location. Recent trips have been to the coal country of northeastern Pennsylvania; when I took the class we went to Kingston, Ottawa, and Montreal.
Since this is now a required class, the Department can't really ask the students to pay for it, so the Department pays for transportation and lodging, generally $1200-$1600 per semester. Ren's idea, and we all really liked it, was that the Fund would be used to underwrite this class. At least initially we can only give about $500 per year, but if we reach our $50,000 goal, we will be able to give out $2000-$2500 per year. Ren would change the name of the course to recognize Lisa. We are going to suggest: GEOG 375 - LMK Memorial Field Experience. We all really liked the concept of Lisa's memory being able to touch each and every Geography graduate at Geneseo (since they all have to take this class), not just one graduating senior.
The students have to write up their findings from this course and many do poster sessions. Ren thought we could have an end-of-the- school-year reception when students present their research and family and friends of Lisa can attend.
Also, we would like to have a plaque describing Lisa and this award in the Cartography Lab in Fraser.
We need to tell Kim how to divide the money by Sept 1. All the other details should be finalized by Sept 15, so please post comments, concerns, questions here. The 5 of us who attended the meeting all agreed on this plan, we hope all 10 of us can agree as well.
Next steps:
Draft language for fall mini-newsletter - Jason H, anyone who is interested
Look into plaque pricing, prepare list of donors for next year - Jenn Norton
Finalize and print thank yous - Missy, Jen Nitka Perri
Website updates - Jason H, Missy
I think that's everything....all in all we felt the meeting was very positive, Kim had wonderful things to say about us all, and we're all so impressed to have reached $15,000... now lets shoot for $50,000

Thanks for the info. I'll be joining you guys at the meeting but won't need a ride. I will be going to work at my school right afterwards. Thanks for the offer, though.
We are set to meet on Monday, August 14 at 10AM in Erwin 23. Ren is able to join us after all, although Kim Faber has to leave by 11, but said we can continue discussions without her.
I asked about conference call possibilities, and haven't heard back. I can't guarantee anything, but if people would like give me their phone numbers, I can try to conference them in Monday morning.
For those who are in Rochester, I'm planning on leaving about 9AM, and have room for 2 more, so if anyone wants to carpool, let me know.

Hi Everyone,
Unfortunately, due to my own last-minute fare-watching and a
definitely-not-my-own foiled terrorist plot, I will not be able to
make it to the meeting on Monday.
I know it's probably not possible to conference in, but I'd love to

Again, my apologies. Hope y'all have a good weekend.
Kristen
Hope you're all having a good summer and not totally melting on the east
coast!
I am looking forward to seeing you on Aug 14.
I took the liberty of summarizing some of the questions/suggestions that
have been expressed on this list serve as a way to prepare for an
efficient meeting with Kim et al.
The attached word document contains the list of ideas/questions to date.
I also included an example of an application that was used in the Dept
of Epidemiology at UNC in memory of an alum. I thought it would provide
an example of how others have used an application process when
considering recipients for an award, if we decide such a process would
be useful for our purpose.
Please keep in mind that I am sharing these a starting point, so please
feel free to edit/add. I just thought it would be helpful for us to
summarize our thoughts ahead of the meeting.
See you soon,
Jenn
I never got it and I think the original would be better. Send it to me when you get back from camp (how wet has it been for you guys?) and then I will take it to the printer.
jen, i think i sent you the logo in the spring. also, i think it is on the remembering lisa website. if you need it again, i will be home from camp next week.
the 14th sounds good.
take care all

Hi Jason,
I really like the idea of the map....I think we can just put their location on (with so many Buff/Rochester people, we probably couldn't fit their names anywhere anyway!)
I am really bad with finances, so however you and Ren/Kim think we should distribute the award is fine by me.
As for who gets the award, I would really like it if we had some input on that. I don't know if we should set up specific criteria, let Ren and the department come up with the final two and then we give input on our choice. I know it sounds a bit picky but I really want the award to go to someone that exemplifies Lisa and her work. It's just a thought.
Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of this meeting. Thanks again for arranging and going.

suggestions, other ideas, etc. And we'll need Ren and Kim's advice

The map of donors is a great idea. Although, some donors may prefer not to
have their names publicly listed... we can talk about this on the 14th as I
am sure Kim would have some advice on the matter.
All of your ideas sound fantastic. You've put a lot of thought and time into all of this planning and we all appreciate it greatly. I'm still not sure whethere I'll be at the August 14th meeting yet, but I would like to do anything I can before that to stay involved in the brainstorming and decision making.
Subject: [RememberingLisa] August 14 Time and Agenda
Hi everyone,
I talked to Kim today and we were shooting for a 10AM meeting. It sounds like this will work for most folks.
As for Ren not being there, I emailed her today (no response yet) about having a meeting sometime before August 14 to get her thoughts. This was Kim's idea actually, and seems like a good one. I asked Ren for some dates that work for her and will circulate those around so that anyone locally who wants to go to that one can let me know which of those dates will work for them.
As for the Agenda on the 14th, I think we need to finalize the specifics of the award, how it will be awarded, and the process for determining recipients. Also, discuss any future fundraising to increase the award principle. One thought I had, since we already surpassed our initial goal, is to give out 4% annually to the award recipients and 1% goes back into the principle. That way, we continually grow the award even without asking people for money again. Finally, I think we should think about how we want the display to look like in Fraser. Ren and Kim had talked about a plaque and info about Lisa and her life and the award and the donors. One idea I had, being a geographer, was that the donors would be listed by hometown, in addition to by name. We could even have a map showing where all the donors are from. I think Lisa would have loved it and plus it shows the wide distribution of people who's lives she touched.
Anyway, that's how things are shaping up for the 14th.
