NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 17 - Data from an observational study suggest
an increased incidence of congestive heart failure (CHF) associated with
initiating anti-hyperglycemic therapies.
...
Dr. Nichols told Reuters Health that he was "a little bit surprised that the
association [with insulin] was as strong as it was. We tried to control for
things that would be associated with insulin use like age and duration of
diabetes and while those things were significant they didn't really remove
the effects of the insulin."
[In MY OPINION, using insulin would have had NOTHING to do with causing
congestive heart failure in severely ill persons (ie, those who initiate
anti-hyperglycemic therapies in a doctor's office...)
It is too easy to conclude that because somebody who has been diabetic for
a long long time (because they are hyperglycemic) and started to use insulin,
and then had a heart attack, it is too easy to point a finger at insulin
and say that the heart attack was CAUSED BY INSULIN.
The sad thing, now, is that this conclusion will be repeated and
repeated, and cited over and over again by one writer and another, and
some doctors will think twice before giving their diabetic patients
INSULIN !!!
Of course, I don't think insulin is for everybody... but it certainly
must be good for hyperglycemics, especially if it gets their glucose
levels down!
But if it gets their glucose levels down, too late, then you shouldn't
blame the heart attack on insulin! - Ellis]
