Hi Ursula,

Where do you live again? My best friend's dad is a Pharmacist and is going to
be on our Board of Directors. His Pharmacy is in a small town, so maybe he'll
have some. I'll call around down here in Texas too if I he doesn't have any.
I'll let you know.

Is anyone using Pepcid Oral Suspension - Macey has been on it for over a
year and the company that makes it has a national backlog of orders. They
say though that some pharmacies may have bottles but are not actively
selling it. Our local pharmacy as well as local childrens hospital
pharmacy has tried all of their contacts but to no avail.

If anyone has a moment could you call your usual pharmacy and see if they
have a bottle of Pepcid Oral Suspension. Macey's pharmacist is willing to
call wherever he needs to to get this product. The only other alternative
is to go to a 20 mg rapid disentigrating tablet and Macey's oral motor is
not ready for that.

I would greatly appreciate it. we have already seen some flareups in her
reflux in only the first week that she has had to miss her doses.

Thanks

HI!

I wanted to let you all know about something that I learned this week and has
really helped Kyra. You all know she was sick for like 6 weeks and on
albuterol because she developed viral asthma. She has only been off the
albuterol for about 2 weeks and Monday she started getting a really congested
nose again---I thought, great here we go again. So I called our ped and
wanted to know what I could do to keep her from getting bad again.

She suggested orange juice and echinicea drops. You can buy them in drop form
at Wal-Mart with the herbs. She told me to give her 10 drops, 3 times a day
and since I've started doing that she's gotten better and better. It is
amazing!! When she was sick before, I started taking it and I didn't get sick
when she and Mike were.

So---with all the colds and crud going around---you might try it! It can't
hurt.

Hi!

I have found a web site that will give $2.00 to International Association of
Reflux Parents(the nonprofit organization that I have founded) for each person
who registers with the site(it's free!). If you click here, it will take you
to their home page and then you just need to register.

Address: 1204 Middlebury Lane, Euless, TX 76040

For description put something like "helps parents with children suffering from
GERD".

Please do this! It will help my organization a great deal!! You can also shop
there and we get even more money. You can shop through sites like E-toys,
Reel.com and many, many more. You pay the same prices you would if you went

I've taken Vancenase--it is fantastic for allergies too! The only problem is
that with prolonged use it can cause nose-bleeds. I have horrible allergies
and it was the only thing that really helped me for any extended time period.

My daughter has been on the albuterol syrup and most recently the aerochamber
with the albuterol inhaler. That helped that most.

It is interesting you should say that about the iv meds. My son always seems
to do better on the IV zantac. When he is having a really bad attack and
nothing else seems to work. The IV's seem to help get it under control. My son
had the fundo las March at age five. The results have been mixed. He is still
refluxing enough to get mild esophagitis.

Hi,
Yes he does have asthma from reflux, but the inhaled steroids are not for an
active asthma attack. His Ped Gi read a study in this months gastroenterolgy,
that they think that inhaled steroids may help reflux. Instead of inhaling
them in swallows them. I am skeptical but at this point I am willing to try
anything. We will see

The Riopam was added this week because she was dry heaving whenever she
would get the hiccups. She was having 2-3 hiccup sessions per day. But
the only thing is you can't give it routinely, you're only supposed to give
it when the hiccups start. But her hiccups are so bad that if you give it
to her when they start then she spits it back up.

Macey aspirated alot when she was younger and as a result of her reflux she
has severe sinus disease (she was aspirating all the way back up into her
sinuses) and asthma. We also do inhaled steriods (Vancenase) and they seem
to keep her sinuses open enough now so that when her reflux flares up the
stuff doesn't get stuck in the sinus cavity but just continues on through.
Also she takes breathing treatments 2-3 times a day (Albuterol & Intal).
That keeps her lungs open for when she aspirates. She hasn't had a Ph
Probe or Barrium Swallow in almost a year and a half so it is probably time
for a new one. Just to see where she's taking this stuff and why the
hiccups are so frequent now.

The fundo has the draw back of making it difficult for the child to throw
up afterwards. With Macey's other conditions that could be a problem.
Generally the GI meds have kept things under control, now it's alittle more
hectic. I wish I had known then that the reflux would affect her sinuses
so bad, that's the only regret of not having the fundo when she was an infant.

Welcome to everyone.

I will say this, when Macey was in the hospital last month and she couldn't
have any of her oral meds they started her on IV Pepcid and IV Reglan
(Cisapride/Propulsid doesn't come in IV form) and she didn't have a problem
in the world for the 3-4 days she was on it. I'm wondering just how much
her system is absorbing the meds and if they're really working.

Alternagel is an over the counter "high potency" antacid our GI suggested.
When the zantac isn't enough, ie. teething times, or too much tomato sauce.
He was on
propulsid from about 3 mos. old until about 7-8 mos ago. GI said to try

it seems ok for now.

What is Alternagel, I'm not familiar with it either.

My daughter is almost 2 years old and has been reflux free since she was 13
months old. She's working on her 2nd set of molars and seems to have small
episodes of reflux where she spits up a little bit. She was on propulsid and
Zantac for 9 mths and they were a Godsend for us. She wouldn't eat until we
got her on the meds. I started all of this(email loop, mailing lists, web
site, nonprofit) when she was about 4 months old.

Hi Rhonda
Did the dr.s say why he still has reflux after the fundo? is it any better?
Do they think it could have come undone or been wrapped to loose? My son
Justin has had reflux for about a year that we know of. His GI said no fundo
because his symptoms are bad enough, he wants to try meds a while longer.

  Ursla,
Has Macy's dr. talked about surgery at all? Justin's GI also feels he may out
grow it, but that contradicts what I have read. I asked him about surgery, but
he want's to wean Justin off meds and see how he does since Justin's symptoms
arn't that bad.

My name is Ursula and I have two daughters, Katie (6) and Macey (3 1/2).
Macey has had reflux since she was born and been on Zantac, Propulsid,
Pepcid, and Riopam. Her reflux is very active right now and we hope to
increase her meds soon. Macey also has asthma, sinus disease, allergic
disease, anemia, chronic constipation, common variable immune deficiency,
sensory integration disorder, possible mild CP, left kidney reflux and is a
little ray of sunshine. I'm hoping to always gain information for her
reflux condition as the doctors told us that she would outgrow it by the
time she was 18 months and obviously that hasn't happened.

Her worst symptoms are regurgitation, cough, foul breath, constant hiccups,
dry-heaves and burning throat. She also stays constipated which her GI
doctor says can be a result of the GERD.

Hope to hear from more people soon.

Hi,
It's me rhonda. Just wanted to say hi and I am glad that this list is up and
running. My son is six years old and has had reflux since birth. He had a
fundoplication last march. He had an endoscope about three weeks and it came
back that he had mild esophagitis as well as reflux. I feel like we are back
at the beginning. It is very frustrating. We are trying inhaled steroids as
well as the regular med. (zantaz, carafate, propulsid.) Hope it works. Any
feed back would be appreciated.

Welcome Ray!

You definitely qualify and I feel for you. Has your 2 year old had reflux
since he was a baby or did it just get diagnosed? I've had several parents
write me and tell me that their children seemed to have outgrown the GERD as
an infant and then when they became a toddler it came back.

There are only a few parents on this list because it just started, but I'm
sure we'll have more soon!
