Hi my 19mth old grandaughter had an endoscopy and a pH impedance test
done this week. She had a failed ph test done at 10weeks old, this is
why the Paed GI asked for this test instead.
The probe that was actually in her stomach was reading really low
figures. I was told that both probes should read 6.5 in a normal
reading, and that anything below 4 was considered abnormal. What I
did notice was, that the probe that was in her oesophagus hardly ever
changed that much... yet the other probe went as low as 1.7 quite
often for example if she coughed. When she had a nap, it stayed
between 2.1 and 2.2 most of the time. When she woke up, she almost
vomited and had a little choke as I held her upright in my arms. Then
that awful noise that I call refluxing came. It sounds like lots of
heavy swallows. I went over to the nurse and asked what the noise was
in his opinion (paed gastro ward) and he said that he didn't know.
Yet he did say it most certainly sounded like something was trying to
come up.
Now this happens all the time at home, especially at night. Usually
she will refuse her dummy, any drinks etc until we have calmed her by
rubbing her belly etc She quite often cries and whimpers in her sleep
and she is always very restless (wrapped probe tube around her neck
three times at least three times whilst there, I'm amazed she didn't
strangle herself).
But and here is the confusing bit for me, the upper probe hardly
changed.... so is this still refluxing? Or does it only get called
reflux if it goes up the oesophagus? Why would a stomach make too
much acid could it be a sign of something else?
Most of the time her symtpoms are controlled quite well by Infant
Gaviscon and Domperidone. She chokes all the time when eating, yet
the specialst speech therapist on the gastro ward says her swallowing
etc is perfectly normal. When her meds are upped, she stops choking
for awhile and we don't get the crying at night.
we wont get any answers for a couple of weeks and it is going to
drive me crazy!!!!!!!! hence long boring and waffling post, so sorry
lol
