Re: [RefluxParents] 4 year old getting fundo...any advice?

Dear Gabrielle, My daughter Megan who is 10, just had a laprascopic nissen fundo on June 10th. It is the best thing we could have done. She had damage to her vocal cords, out of control asthma, croup with stridor caused by spasms  that occurr as a response to the acid hitting that area, and horrible moodiness. Her reflux was silent most of the time so we did not even know she had it till this winter. We had no success with meds. either. The worst part of the fundo has been the gas pains afterward. Megan had them for two days in the hospital. She needed morphine thru Wed. (had her surgery on a Monday). Her wrap was done just under 2cm. and she is able to burp. Our surgeon wanted her to be able to do that and vomit a little if ever necessary (flu). She said that the reflux would be eliminated 90-95%. So far it is 100% reduced! They gave us tylenol with codeine at home and she needed that for several days too. Are you having a lap. fundo done too?  Watch the food brought in by the hosp. kitchen. I went to get a coffee and found bacon, eggs, and toast awaiting my starving daughter (not the soft foods  the Dr. ordered). Thank goodness we told Megan what she was allowed to eat! A friend of mine emailed me this great booklet with advise about psot fundo foods that I could send you. My email address is lhamann@.... Please email me with your adress and I will email it to you.
Best of wishes,
Laurie

Subject: [RefluxParents] 4 year old getting fundo...any advice?

Hello, Everyone!

Today we scheduled my daughter for a nissen fundo in a couple of
weeks.  It was a long time coming...she is four years old.  Since her
reflux is severe, tends to cause micro-aspiration and asthma, and the
Reglan and Prilosec just aren't keeping it under control, we decided
it was time to get it over with.

Has anyone had this done lately?  Any advice for us?

Thanks for your help.

Gabrielle

Gabrielle, I'm sorry to hear your daughter is struggling. Although I haven't dealt with a fundo recently, I did deal with a fundo in much the same situation...
