Re: [RefluxParents] Harrison's surgery

Hi Valerie,
I have 2 children who have had fundos, and I consider both of them to be
successful. Anthony's was done 20 months ago, when he was almost 3 yrs old.
While he does still have some problems, and remains on medications, he is so
much better since his fundo. I have absolutely no regrets.
Natalie's was done only 2 months ago, and she will be 9 yrs old next month.
So far, she says she no longer refluxes, and is finally free from pain. She
still isn't eating normally as a result of the fundo, but that is just par
for the course. That will come with time.

You will most likely hear more horror stories on the internet- it is
generally only the people who are still having problems who are here. Any
others have long since gone, and it helps to know that- to keep it all in
perspective.

There are other procedures being done, apart from the fundo, but so far, they
aren't available in children, and it will be many years before they will be.
They are also trialling a new drug to be used in reflux. That may give you
some hope for the future.

Hope that helps,
Glenda

How old is Emma?  My son, Teddy is almost 8 and has had GERD since birth.
He has had three endoscopies, has been on and off Prilosec or Previcid for
2 and 1/2 years and has been on Pepcid on and off in addition.  He was just
diagnosed with Asthma but no one knows if it is from the reflux or his
severe allergies (he starts shots next week) and is also allergic to
peanuts, nuts and berries.  Almost every time we see the doctor, he brings
up the fundo surgery but I'm very scared of it since I haven't heard many
success stories.  Please share yours if it is positive.  Also, I've wanted
to wait to see if he outgrows it or if not, if we wait, it gives the
surgeons more time to get used to doing it laproscopically (which wasn't
available when Teddy was younger).  Maybe they'll invent something new in
the meantime.
Good luck!
Valerie.
