Valerie,
Emma's story is definitely a SUCCESS STORY! I'll try not to let it
drag on & on. . . but here it is in a nutshell:
She was born screaming & never stopped for several months. She
cried on average of 12 to 14 hours per day from the beginning.
Actually, she screamed!! We went through two hospital stays
before my maternity leave was up (4 wks>). She was on Propulsid
& ZAntac. At 9 months, she was put on Prilosec. She also was
diagnosed with failure to thrive, severe asthma, & had 3
pneumonias before she was 1 year old. She was milk & soy
intolerant, too. At 21 months, the doctor recommended surgery.
We hadn't yet read any horror stories, so we were all for it. Four
weeks after surgery, she went off all medications (including asthma
meds.) and has become a PERFECTLY happy & healthy child.
The surgery recovery was tiresome as she didn't want to eat "baby
food" any longer. She also got food stuck at the site & had to go
in to get it removed a week after surgery. After that day, Emma
went 11 months without going to the doctor except for post-op
check-ups. Since then, her MILD asthma has returned, but
nothing else.
As for the fundo type. . . Emma had an open fundo & it really was
no problem. She had a 1 1/2 inch incision just below her ribcage
to one side. They sealed off the incision with a clear looking "glue"
that came off in 7 days by itself. She had very little pain from the
surgery after she was home. The biggest thing was getting her to
eat.
I could go on & on . . . the surgery was the biggest miracle I've
ever seen. I spent days after she was well just watching her play
so peacefully, pain free while I literally cried tears of joy. I know it
doesn't always work out as successfully as with Emma, but we're
definitely willing to take that chance again with Harrison.
Hope this helps.
