How to recognize fad diets

1. Claim to help you lose weight very quickly (more than 1 or 2 pounds per week).

2. Promise that you can lose weight and keep it off without exercising on a regular basis.
If a diet plan or product sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

3. Base claims on "before and after" photos.
Offer testimonials from clients or "experts" in weight loss, science or nutrition.

4. Draw simple conclusions from complex medical research.
Limit your food choices.

5. Require you to spend a lot of money on things like seminars, pills or prepackaged meals in order for the plan to work.

What is the life cycle of a fad diet?

Stage I - Cautious Optimism
People find out about the diet - it's like an urban myth and promises fantastic results. At this stage people are wary and asking if it's for real.

Stage II - Unbridled Enthusiasm
The dieter embarks on the new diet and sees instant results - everybody is talking - and there is a buzz in the air.

Stage III - Creeping Disillusionment
The weight loss is beginning to slow down. People are asking themselves "Can I really eat like this forever?"

Stage IV - Diet History
The diet is confined to history

Stage V - Rebound
After enduring the diet for a period of days or weeks, the dieter returns to the typical eating patterns, and most of the weight comes back on. .
