I totally agree with you on not doing well
with bonuses, and I have concern of over treatment with bonuses. I work
in a perio office and do plenty of RPS and some Arestin, all the while not receiving
bonuses. I have been in general practices temping and otherwise and I see
a trend of 20-30 minute cleanings with micro ultrasonics, letting the patient
go early and placing 7 plus Arestin sites to show the doc how valuable the
hygienist is. I think Arestin is fine in some cases but I don’t
think it’s a fix-all for everyone like it seems to be sold as.
Twenty years ago I saw offices that had xrays on a bonus system and everyone
got them 2 times a year needed or not. I can’t work that way and I
need my patients to know that I’m working for their best interest no
matter what.

hi Whitney and welcome to a great career
:)
I am in CA too, Sacramento area and have been a hygienist
since 1989.
Congratulations, you scored! I cant help
but feel a twinge of jealousy ;-/ but I am very happy for you.
I work for a lady Dentist with a
fairly new practice and I know she could not afford a bonus system for me.
I am making $47 an hour and have never in my career made a bonus for
SRP's, and I do at least two quads per day every day I work! But again, I
personally do not do well with bonuses. The one time I did work on a bonus
system was when I first graduated and it was based on a production per
patient amount. I was raking in the $$ but I always felt so guilty... just
me... but I did not feel like I could recommend needed treatment without having
an ulterior motive. Just not my cup of tea.
After doing this for so many years, I am
happy and content to have a job with a doc I respect and who treats me well. I
only work two days a week and have been with her for about 2 years. She just
gave me 6 months leave of absence (unpaid) to take care of my mom and is
holding my job for me.
again, congratulations and keep us posted
