You bet we reported him!! I was appalled and disgusted when my husband told me about all those things mentioned. We filed a complaint with Cal OSHA the next day. That was 10 years ago. But as far as we know, the office is still around. I think the doctor had since retired, not sure whether it was due to an inspection that led to a suspended license or he got off the hook and retired before any investigation. His daughter now runs his office. We can only hope she is more ethical than her father.

Offices like these should be reported to OSHA and the health dept TODAY. People's lives are at risk. Using carpules that have been used with other patients is beyond imagination. This is truly criminal. Using an ultrasonic that has been wiped down is so nasty and also criminal. My gosh, a new insert is only $89 through Hayes Handpiece Repair and is a terrific insert. The spreading of hepatitis and all other communicable diseases is very possible when using tissue cutting instruments, such as ultrasonic inserts, that are not sterilized. I am amazed that in the year 2008 this unethical practice still goes on.
Renee, glad to work in an ethical office that has NEVER told me to reuse anything

-reusing plastic disposable high-volume evacuation tips; the entire office has only 3, they kept reusing them over and over
-the entire office has only 1 ultrasonic tip, they use alcohol to wipe it down and reuse after every patient.
-half used local anesthetic cartridges are saved to be used on another
patient.

Ok don't know what happened with my last email....so I'll start again, it may show up as an incomplete first email...
I was starting a discussion on "interesting
office" incidents... considering
our last discussion on the masks.
1) my first dental assisting job, we re-used rubber dam...yes, we did! cold sterile and baby powder...you were to remove it w/o tearing or ripping the rubber dam.
2) since we used the masks with the shields on them, there were times we'd find a "used" on back in the box (see splatter on shield, or makeup in the mask) so the only way to guarantee that wouldn't happen was to rip the shield off of the mask
3) if you didn't use all your gauze on your tray, he would pick it up and put it in his pocket and put it back...but the issue was, sometimes it WAS USED and we'd find gauze with blood or such in a drawer (regardless of used or not, if it's on a tray set up, it's contaminated in my opinion)..so
what I would start to do,
was once i called for the exam, I would take my water syringe and wet any remaining gauze on my tray.
4) refold any napkins used when just "checking" a patient!
5) I would on occasion find disposible cups in the cupboard with lipstick on them.
6) gloves: if the DDS was to leave the patient to check on something or such, take the gloves off and lay them on a towel and use them again when he came back to the patient.
7) lab coats that were re-hung rather than put in with the dirty lab coats/bag.
ok, let's hear the off the wall cheap things you've seen in your offices.
I found this information under California Labor laws. Basically it says that if you are a licensed professional, meaning you have a Master's Degree or higher,...
