The method is rather simple. Once you have selected the yin vessel, say the liver; pick the depth that is most absent. E.g. if it is absent at 3 beans pressure (the most superficial)- needle the metal point Lr4. If it is absent at the bone depth (lacking root), needle the water point Lr8. This method is also useful for an urgent or fuller sensation at a particular depth. This is most common in the center at the earth depth or just above that in the fire depth. Do the same even method. E.g. in the left middle position, it is pounding and fuller at the fire depth. Needle Lr2, the pulse usually evens out smoothly between the depths.
This method is wu xing, there are no luo points, or mu-shu point combinations. There is an exemption. Divide the region from the du channel to the outer shu channel into five regions. It goes from water at the du to metal at the outer shu. Thus, for the liver if it absent at the root in the pulse, then needle the du point or the hua tuo jia ji points.

I am still curious about the technique...
1)Is it the mother point on the Inside/outside channel, combined with that
paired channel's luo point?
2)What's the rationale for that particular luo point?
3)Plus either the Mu or Shu points?
