In this method, I would assume that you have identified a channel or an organ that is the 'center of pathology.' Once you have a focus, then evaluate the five depths. The needling is an even method; or, you can boost if it is inufficinet at a certain depth (E.g. absent at the water depth of the live, tonify Lr8), or, you can reduce if it is full at a particular depth (E.g. sedation method on the fire point of the liver if the pulse is pounding and moer full just above the middle depth in the fire sector - Lr2).

Could you please explain this approach? I.e., how do you direct the results,
say, towards tonifying or dispersing the generating channel, dispersing the
controlling channel, etc.? If you have two channels in trouble, say an
asthma patient with weak (L) KD Metal level, Weak Lu Water level, and the
controlling channel is excess (ST pulse that is excess (Metal position)) -
what points would you choose? I'm new to 5 element thinking; I come from a
TCM background.
