Re: [PulseDiagnosis] Re: Umbilical Pulse

Hi May -

If the ascending aorta is located
anatomically a little bit to the left (see Gray's anatomy), how can
the pulse be centered?

My experience over the years places the pulsation superior and left of the umbilicus when palpating the normal person. If it is visible or in any of the other locations, it suggests a more serious situation.

Also, when it is not centered, I need to
massage it toward the center. What Am I massaging? Am I pushing the Ascending Aorta to the center?

Yes, it is the abdominal aorta.

Why does it deviate in one direction
or another?

The meaning that is assigned varies depending on the beliefs of the practitioners that are making the observations. But - if the constitution is weaker, more variations can occur since the underlying connective tissues tend to be weaker.

I also read that correcting Akabani's imbalances can
correct the UP.
Do you know if this technique has an origin in the Chinese texts or
is it Japanese??

Any treatment that strengthens the person and corrects the general distribution of qi and blood, will tend to correct the umbilicus more consistently. The origins of such methods are found in the Nei Jing and Nan Jing. The original cosmological bases for the directions and the elements as applied to various diagnostic models are found in the Nei Jing while the specific application to the abdomen are found in the Nan Jing.

Best - Will

Hi May - The umbilical pulse is usually the abdominal aorta. If it is palpated just below the umbilicus, it can be the left or right common iliac arteries. It...

Thank you Will for your precise answer. I learned to check it at the umbilicus (under) and not above or below it, with 4 fingers. The pulse should be centered...
