Recently, someone posted a warning to this list about potential
interactions between protease inhibitors and erectile disfunction
drugs, such as Viagra. Apparently, both are processed by the same
enzyme in the liver, which slows down the clearance of ED drugs.
For me, this is more than a theoretical risk. I have come close to
passing out a couple of times after taking approximately 25 mg. of
Viagra. I say approximately because I split my 100 mg pills in
quarters to save money. I also take two medications for hypertension
that probably compound the temporary hypotension caused by the Viagra
combined with my Reyataz. The problem seems to occur when I stand up
suddenly from a sitting or lying position. I have learned not to try
to get up suddenly from a nap to answer a ringing phone in another
room. My doctor suggested I consider smaller doses of Viagra, which
would mean buying a smaller dose and splitting it into still smaller
doses, increasing my cost.
I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has had similar experiences
after taking Viagra or other ED drugs while on protease inhibitors.
Thanks, John
