Play a BIGGER Role in Life!

By: Hifzur Rehman

Did you ever think that you are not playing the role which you should play in
your life?

Don't you think that you are born to play a leading role, a much bigger role in
the real drama of your life? What is holding you back then? Your own short
sightedness!

In order to play a bigger role in life you need to visualize a bigger picture of
yourself. Once you have that picture before you, it will be much easier for you
to paint that picture into reality.

Every morning, I look in the mirror and say "I have to play a bigger role in
life". These simple words make my day, a wonderful day, every day, because my
firm determination that I have to play a bigger role in life, keeps my mind in
supreme working condition, fully prepared for playing a bigger, bigger, and much
bigger role in life. No surprise, my every day is getting better than
yesterdays.

Every night, before going to bed, I visualize that tomorrow is going to be
better than today. And it happens! Yes, it happens!!

While your body muscles need some kind of daily physical exercise, your brain
tissues also need some dose of daily inspirational exercise. It is, therefore,
important to keep yourself motivated all the time.

You need to clearly define, preferably in writing, every single detail of your
big dreams and ambitious goals. You must try to bring out a bigger YOU out of
your own person so that you are able to reach those big goals. Never think of
living an ordinary person's life! It's a sin! It's not your way of life. Let me
repeat that you are born to play a leading role, a much bigger role in the real
drama of your life.

Your confidence in yourself to reach your goals with strong determination to set
new records of excellence, are your biggest assets. You are not far from playing
a (much) bigger role in life!

DID I MARRY THE RIGHT PERSON ?

During one of our seminars, a woman asked a common question. She said, " How do I know if I married the right person ?"

I noticed that there was a large man sitting next to her so I said, " It Depends. Is that your husband?"

In all seriousness, she answered " How do you know?"

Let me answer this question because the chances are good that it's Weighing on your mind.

Here's the answer.

EVERY relationship has a cycle. In the beginning, you fell in love with Your spouse. You anticipated their call, wanted their touch, and liked Their idiosyncrasies.

Falling in love with your spouse wasn't hard. In fact, it was a Completely natural and spontaneous experience. You didn't have to DO anything. That's why it's called "falling" in love... Because it's happening TO YOU.

People in love sometimes say, " I was swept of my feet." Think about the Imagery of that _expression. It implies that you were just standing There; doing nothing, and then something came along and happened TO YOU.

Falling in love is easy. It's a passive and spontaneous experience.

But after a few years of marriage, the euphoria of love fades. It's the Natural cycle of EVERY relationship. Slowly but surely, phone calls Become a bother ( if they come at all), touch is not always welcome ( when it happens), and your spouse's idiosyncrasies, instead of being cute,  drive you nuts.

The symptoms of this stage vary with every relationship, but if you Think about your marriage, you will notice a dramatic difference between the initial stage when you were in love and a much duller or even angry subsequent stage.

At this point, you and/or your spouse might start asking, " Did I marry The right person?" And as you and your spouse reflect on the euphoria of The love you once had, you may begin to desire that experience with someone else.

This is when marriages breakdown. People blame their spouse for  their Unhappiness and look outside their marriage for fulfillment.

Extramarital fulfillment comes in all shapes and sizes. Infidelity is The most obvious. But sometimes people turn to work, church, a hobby, a friendship, excessive TV, or abusive substances.

But the answer to this dilemma does NOT lie outside your marriage. It lies within it.

I'm not saying that you couldn't fall in love with someone else. You Could.

And TEMPORARILY you'd feel better. But you'd be in the same situation a few years later. Because ( listen carefully to this):

THE KEY TO SUCCEEDING IN MARRIAGE IS NOT FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON; IT'S LEARNING TO LOVE THE PERSON YOU FOUND.

SUSTAINING love is not a passive or spontaneous experience. It'll NEVER just happen to you. You can't "find " LASTING love. You have to "make"  it day in and day out. That's why we have the _expression " the labor of  love."

Because it takes time, effort, and energy. And most importantly, it Takes WISDOM. You have to know WHAT TO DO to make your marriage work.

Make no mistake about it. Love is NOT a mystery. There are specific Things you can do ( with or without your spouse ) to succeed with your marriage.

Just as there are physical laws of the universe ( such as gravity),

There are also laws for relationships. Just as the right diet and exercise Program makes you physically stronger, certain habits in your Relationship WILL make your marriage stronger. It's a direct cause and effect. If  you know and apply the laws, the results are predictable... You can " make" love.

Love in marriage is indeed a " decision"... Not just a feeling.

He trains India's poorest students for the IIT

His father, a post office clerk in Bihar, couldn't afford private schooling for his children. So, Anand Kumar studied at a Hindi medium government school where, at an early age, he fell in love with mathematics. During graduation, he submitted papers on Numbers Theory that were published in UK's Mathematical Spectrum and The Mathematical Gazette.

He was accepted by Cambridge University and was close to realising his dream of becoming a mathematician, when his father suddenly passed away. The household income dwindled and Kumar and his mother made papad, which he sold door-to-door in the evenings, while writing mathematical theory in the daytime.

Then one day, a well-wisher suggested Kumar teach maths. In 1995, at the age of 22, he rented a classroom for Rs 500 a month and started teaching. In one year's time, the strength of his classroom went from two to 36. Today, his study centre Ramanujan School of Mathematics is renowned, the world over. In an interview with Sumita Vaid Dixit, he talks (in chaste Hindi) about Indian education, revolution and his dream.

Why did you start Super 30?
Within three years we had nearly 500 students. Although the fee was nominal -- Rs 1,500 a year -- some poor students could not pay. Once, a boy came to me and said that he wanted to study but could only pay after his father, a poor farmer, had harvested potatoes. In Bihar, we call it 'aloo ukharna'.

I didn't want to take away the boy's only hope of changing his life because he couldn't pay. That's when I decided that I will form a group of 30 bright students, all from poor families, provide them with board and lodging and prepare them for IIT. This group was called Super 30. My brother Pranav Kumar, a violinist by profession, manages the institute, while my mother cooks for the students.

In the last seven years, 182 students out of 210 have made it to different IITs of the country. And for the last two years, all 30 students of Super 30 have made it to IIT. Parents of some students are bricklayers some work as domestic help. Now many of our students are working in Europe and the US.

What is it about your teaching methods that help students get through to IIT?
This success is a combination of three factors. My students have junoon (passion), a fire in them to achieve. Two, our teaching approach is different. I use multimedia slides to make a little story with characters to explain maths concepts. Three, we take tests every day. Well, in a nutshell, we teach our students the how and why! That's all.

But how do you run the place with the little fee you charge the other students?
I didn't start the place to make money. There are many coaching institutes in Patna for the rich, but none for the poor. NRIs (non-resident Indians) come to me with offers of help, but I wanted to prove that much can be achieved with fewer resources.

Have you been able to prove that?
I think I have. There are far too many students coming to us, more than what we can take. And this has annoyed many coaching institutes. As you would know, many of the institutes here are run by criminals. I have received death threats, one of my non-teaching staff was stabbed, once they even tried to blow me away with a crude bomb, but I escaped unhurt. I move around with two security guards armed with machines guns.

Does the sight of security guards scare away children or parents?
(Laughs) Children in Bihar are familiar with the criminal activities here. It doesn't scare them.

Don't you get scared your life may be at stake?
I am doing this for society. Yes, mobility is restricted and I get frustrated at times, but it's okay. I get my strength from these kids. But over the past few years, the crime rate has come down and the police support me. Besides, if I get scared how will the others join me in creating a revolution?

What kind of revolution?
Making education accessible to every poor child in India . I wish the kids I have taught come back to their hometowns and do something for their people, their village. At times, it hurts to see that some forget about giving back to the society.

But there's another kind of kranti (revolution) taking place. Earlier when a peon used to work at an IAS officer's residence, he hoped that when his own son became a peon, the officer would treat him well. Today, the peon who works at the IAS officer's house wants his son to become an IAS officer, not a peon. That's kranti! We mustn't forget the sacrifice and hardships parents go through just to make sure their children live better lives, their children go to schools.

Would the HRD minister's proposals bring about a change?
Kapil Sibalji thinks that by changing the syllabus or introducing a grading system, education will improve. The system will not change like this. Change will come when teachers have the passion to teach. Jab unme junoon hoga! For that teachers should be paid well. It's ironical that while parents want their children to have great teachers, they don't want their children to become teachers!

The policymakers' idea of education is limited to Delhi  and the NCR region. They have no clue of the positions of schools in Bihar or Uttar Pradesh  many schools don't have roofs here.

And suggesting 80 per cent as cut-off marks for the IIT entrance exam is ridiculous. You cannot apply this to local boards or to students in villages. There cannot to be true development until the villages of India are also a part of the development process. Bharat ki atman gaon mein bassi hain (the spirit of this nation resides in the villages).

Then what's the way forward?
We need two syllabi: one for students with an ordinary intellect and one for students with extraordinary intellect. There are those who can do very well in jobs and there are those who can excel in research, and the first six years of schooling are good enough to evaluate a student's potential. This method is followed by China and Russia.

Do you know that China has topped 15 times in the past 22 years in the International Mathematical Olympiad? In times to come the top researches and scientists will come from China.

So we have to think of novel ways of encouraging our students to get into research. Why hasn't India produced Nobel winners in a long time? The ones that have are those who left this country to pursue their research elsewhere.

And, what are your future plans?
I want to extent my programme to students of Class 5 and 6 as many gifted children fade away before they reach class 10. Many out of school to sell vegetables or work at tea stalls. I want to catch them young.

So, now I'm thinking of setting up a chain of free schools across the country, with free board and lodging facilities, where children can study from Class 5 to up to Class 12 and where they are prepared not just for IIT but Olympiad tests in mathematics, physics and chemistry.

But your dream of going to Cambridge still remains unfulfilled?
When those eyes full of hope look at me, the respect and pleasure I get seeing my students being placed in large organisations makes me forget about it. But I do keep travelling to the US to give lectures my papers get published in international magazines. I am happy.

Good Read

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

"Your son is here," she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed

Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the

Young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse  suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.

He refused.

Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

"Who was that man?" he asked.

The nurse was startled, "He was your father," she answered.

"No, he wasn't," the Marine, replied. "I never saw him before in my life."

"Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?"

"I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just

Wasn't here. When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed."

The next time someone needs you ... Just be there. Stay.

2009 in Photos....§ -- PART – 2

30 Pics

The year 2009 is now coming to a close, and it's time to take a look back over the past 12 months through photographs. Historic elections were held in Iran, India and the United States, some wars wound down while others escalated, China turned 60, and the Berlin Wall was remembered 20 years after it came down. Each photo tells its own tale, weaving together into the larger story of 2009.

G r i n c h e s
He's a mean one. by Kevin
December 14, 2009
Cranky, bitter, negative, cheap, and a ‘curmudgeon of spirit’.  Life is karmic or, ‘payback’ for what came before that wasn’t dealt with from the heart and consciousness.  Those who didn’t pay attention to their unresolved issues while still young, although, still at any age, possible, will face more of the same resulting in a visible suppressed anger and bitterness.  Many put ‘lipstick’ on their low self esteem and, negative perceptions that they use to defend the illusion of happiness.

Wipe away the thin veneer of ‘pretending happiness’ and a ‘grinch’ appears when it is least expected - male or female.  Bitterness doesn’t require a pill to active the behavior, it’s a slow accumulation of failed experiences, be they marriage or, rejections of some sort that, ironically, were probably the result of ‘being a vacuum for the problems’ and, creating them, with or without help from another. The ‘grinch’ has immersed himself deep into the world of selfishness mainly exhibiting itself in their thin, fragile persona that underneath is boiling all kinds of ‘spitter-sputter’.

A dear spiritual friend of mine, who’s an inspiration to all willing to ‘drop their ego’, tells the complainers of life that she has faced rape, domestic violence, raising 3 kids, and earlier being a prostitute as well as, innumerable inconsiderate, hurtful judgments. She shows that she loves life, herself and, giving inspiration to others.  Her words to those ‘grinches’ are to call their ‘bluff’ on blaming dilemmas on factors outside of themselves and, ‘to get over it’ while doing something positive about being thankful for everything as having been an opportunity to find the blessings that were hidden in plain sight.

Learning to love oneself, apart from ‘treating’ oneself to the material and ‘illusions’, is a ‘road to finding riches’.  Those ‘riches’ are finding out how to love the inner self which starts by identifying and, taking responsibility for the fears and ignorance that linger within.  No one who really loves themselves is going to reach out and flash a magic wand to change what can only be done the slow, long way within oneself. The focus on the ‘bliss within can start at any age but, the years make it more comfortable to find ‘shields’ to guard one’s ‘loitering negativity’.  The only wealth worth it’s weight in ‘gold’ is that within! Be a ‘gold digger’ within!

A major new study has found that when it comes to religious tolerance globally, predominantly Muslim countries rank among the least tolerant, while "Western" democracies make up the bulk of the freest places to live. Such findings may come as no surprise to millions of citizens of Westernized countries and refugees of religious persecution from Eastern and Middle Eastern nations, for example.

The new study, "Global Restrictions on Religion," charted "publicly reported incidents of religious violence, intolerance, intimidation and discrimination in 198 countries and territories from mid-2006 to mid-2008." Importantly, the study found that "more than two out of three people around the world live in countries with high or very high restrictions on religion." In this regard, almost 50 percent of all nations charted either do not allow foreign missionaries or restrict their activities, while some 90 percent require religious organizations to register with the government, mainly for tax purposes.

Surprising finds

The study did make a few surprising discoveries, including that, in tracking "violence between religious groups in 126 countries," it was found that a mere nine percent of these nations experienced "religion-related terrorism leading to injury or death." Another surprise was that the supposedly "moderate" Muslim nation of Indonesia is actually one of the most intolerant countries when it comes to religious freedom:

"Indonesia—the most populous Muslim country in the world—is often touted as an example of tolerance and democracy in the Islamic world.

"But a huge new study suggests it's actually among the most restrictive countries in the world when it comes to religion.

Interestingly, in other countries, such as China, "tight controls" on religious practice seem to keep the peace between faiths, whereas less restrictive India suffers "very high levels of social hostility," mainly between Hindus and Muslims. Indeed, India rated the highest overall in terms of "social hostilities" and, despite its moderate governmental tolerance, has been known to prosecute individuals for "hurting another religion," as exemplified in the recent arrest of a Christian pastor and his wife, who had been attacked by Muslims and who were subsequently charged with "defiling a place of worship with intent to hurt another religion and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings," per the Indian Penal Code section 295 and 294(A).

Brazil rates best overall

As concerns the two categories of government regulation and social hostility, the study concluded that "Brazil has the lowest ratings in both categories among the 25 largest countries in the world, while Pakistan has the highest, followed closely by Indonesia." This finding means that Brazil is the least restrictive and most tolerant nation of the top more than two dozen biggest nations globally.

Regarding religious tolerance overall, "Egypt, Iran and Bangladesh also rate poorly for religious freedom, while Japan, the United States, South Africa, Italy and the United Kingdom score well." Japan, of course, is an Eastern country, but the population is essentially homogenous with 98.6 percent of the populace "pure Japanese."

The study determined that the U.S. has low government restriction but a "moderate amount of social tension" because of religious divisiveness, a determination based on law enforcement statistics. Study leader Brian Grim said the U.S. was "marked down because of the Bush administration's 'global war on terror,'" while major terrorist incidents widely ascribed to Islamic fundamentalists on U.S. soil, such as 9/11 and Fort Hood, had not been factored into the study.

In consideration of the current climate of religious strife in many places, these discoveries may be considered hopeful in that this study is being conducted in the first place and that open dialogue about religion is increasing globally, without as much of the past repression and fear. This important development has much to do with the internet and its extraordinary freedom of expression.

Isn't it strange how a 20 rupee note seems like such a large amount when
you donate it to temple, but
such a small amount
when you go shopping?

Isn't it strange how 2 hours seem so long when
you're at Temple, and how
short they seem when you're
watching a good movie?

Isn't it strange that you can't
find a word to say when
you're praying,
but you have no trouble
thinking what to talk about
with a friend?

Isn't it strange how difficult
and boring it is to read
one chapter
of the Bhagwad Gita, but how easy
it is to read 100 pages of
a popular novel ?

Isn't it strange how everyone
wants front-row-tickets
to concerts or
games, but they do whatever
is possible to sit at the last
row in Jagran?

Isn't it strange how we need to
know about an event for
Temple 2-3
weeks before the day so we can
include it in our agenda, but we can
adjust it for other events in
the last minute?

image00661.gif

Isn't it strange how difficult it
is to learn a fact about God to share it
with others, but how easy
it is to learn, understand,
extend and repeat gossip?

Isn't it strange how we
believe everything
that magazines and newspapers
say, but we question the words in the
Bhagwad Gita?

Isn't it strange how everyone
wants a place in
heaven, but they don't want
to believe, do, or say anything
to get there?

image00991.gif

Isn't it strange how we send
jokes in e-mails
and they are forwarded
right away,
but when we are going to send
messages about God, we think
about it twice before we share
it with others?

It's STRANGE...Isn't it?

A Millionaire & Three Beggers Bookmark and Share

There was a good-natured millionaire in the town. Three beggars thought of approaching him for help. The first man went to the millionaire and said: "O Lord! I want five rupees. Please give me." The millionaire was taken aback at this man's impudence. "What! You demand five rupees from me as though I owe you the money! How dare you? How can I afford to give five rupees to a single beggar? Here, take these two rupees and get away," he said. The man went away with the two rupees.

The next beggar went to the millionaire and said: "Oh Lord! I have not taken a square meal for the past ten days. Please help me."
"How much do you want?" asked the millionaire.

"Whatever you give me, Maharaj," replied the beggar.
"Here, take this ten rupee note. You can have nice food for at least three days." The beggar walked away with the ten rupee note.

The third beggar came. "Oh Lord, I have heard about your noble qualities. Therefore, I have come to see you. Men of such charitable disposition are verily the manifestations of God on earth," he said.

"Please sit down," said the millionaire. "You appear to be tired. Please take this food," he said, and offered food to the beggar.
"Now please tell me what I can do for you."

"Oh Lord," replied the beggar; "I merely came to meet such a noble personage that you are. You have given me this rich food already. What more need I get from you? You have already shown extraordinary kindness towards me. May God bless you!"

But the millionaire, struck by the beggar's spirit, begged of the beggar to remain with him, built a decent house for him in his own compound, and looked after him for the rest of his life.

God is like this good millionaire. Three classes of people approach Him, with three different desires and prayers. There is the greedy man full of vanity, full of arrogance, full of desires. He demands the objects of worldly enjoyment from God. Since this man, whatever be his vile desires, has had the good sense to approach God, He grants him some part of the desired objects (even these very soon pass away, just as the two rupees the first beggar got are spent before nightfall).

The other type of devotee prays to the Lord for relief from the sufferings of the world, but is better than the first one, in as much as he is ready to abide by His Will. To him the Lord grants full relief from suffering, and bestows on him much wealth and property.

The third type he merely prays to the Lord: "O Lord, Thou art Existence-Absolute, Knowledge-Absolute, Bliss-Absolute, etc., etc." What does he want? Nothing. But the Lord is highly pleased with his spirit of renunciation, of desirelessness and of self-surrender. Therefore, He makes him eat His own food, i.e., He grants this man Supreme Devotion to Himself. Over and above this, He makes the devotee to live in His own House For ever afterwards this devotee dwells in the Lord's Abode as a Liberated
Sage

Fight with wifes begins Bookmark and Share

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive... ..so, I took her to a gas station..... and that's how the fight started.

*-*-*-*-*-*

I tried to talk my wife into buying a case of Miller Light for $14.95. Instead, she bought a jar of cold cream for $7.95. I told her the beer would make her look better at night than the cold cream. And that's how the fight started.

*-*-*-*-*-*

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too' And that's how the fight started.

*-*-*-*-*-*

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'

'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God!' says my wife, 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?' And that's how the fight started.

*-*-*-*-*-*

I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah, well I couldn't believe it.... he was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY!!!' So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?' And that's how the fight started.

*-*-*-*-*-*
I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.

'I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.'

He said, 'Aren't you worried about the mad cow?'

'Nah, she can order for herself.'

And that's how the fight
started.

Stay.

Pop Up Love
msh0308-15 springy - neon Jack-in-the-Box by Night Reader Bev

Love that doesn’t mean anything, except in the moment, is better than no love at all. Holding back from giving 100%, whether in sports, on the job, or in a relationship, leaves the encounter teetering on the brink of disappearing with little announcement. Going all the way is self inspiring to give more while inspiring another or others to do the same.

A brief story:
A boy and a girl were playing together. The boy had a collection of marbles. The girl had some sweets with her... The boy told the girl that he will give her all his marbles in exchange for her sweets. The girl agreed.
The boy kept the biggest and the most beautiful marble aside and gave the rest to the girl. The girl gave him all her sweets as she had promised.  That night, the girl slept peacefully. But the boy couldn't sleep as he kept wondering if the girl had hidden some sweets from him the way he had hidden his best marble.  Moral of the story: If you don't give your hundred percent in a relationship, you'll always keep doubting if the other person has given his/her hundred percent.
Surrendering to loving yourself changes and raises the quality of loving anyone.  We don’t surrender to anyone person however, they may be the ‘vehicle’ to reach within and give 100%.  Being in a place of surrender changes the experience of loving others and life in general.’Popping up’ once in a while to respond to stimuli while guarding the quality and/or quality, is conditional giving at best.  The ‘male ego’, (which is also found in the female), is a wall or abutment to experience the fullness of unconditional love.
‘Pop up love’ comes from the ego to satisfy the pleasure in the moment with no regard for anyone, if truth be known, than the self.  To be locked in the false self or ego is to be one more human among billions who live life like the animals with no recognition that we are the only specie capable of living life as if we are ‘gods of consciousness’.  Accept yourself as helpless and, the surrender will happen of it’s own accord.  The shackles of identifying with ones fears of letting go leave imprints of programming carried down the ages from the caveman.  ‘Pop up love’ is divine when from a place of surrender! Leaving ‘footprints’ of love will help others follow in step toward their own experience.

Good points to ponder. Working couples buy more luxuries that are
often 'wants' and,
not needs. The real riches are in taking the time to self love with
minimal needs and wants. There may just be no 'pot of gold' to work for and, life doesn't guarantee the rest of today, let alone tomorrow. Get 'Viagra' for common sense and 'self realization' without all the imagined need for all the 'toys'.

That's how good it was in the fifties. WE ARE LIKE hamsters today in a

Does it suit the big corps to have humanity so flattened? I don't think so.
Their strategy is skewed and doesn't even serve THEM!

Why Are You Running?

Out on the trail for a long run – my mind bounces from thought to thought; seemingly unguided at times, wandering through every facet of who I am – ideas, inspiration, contemplation, reflection, plans, consideration, observations, prayer….marriage, family, work, successes, failures, opportunities, God…yesterday, today, tomorrow, forever…I love my long runs.

Purpose

Recently on my long run, I was challenging myself with the question of, “why do I run?”  What is at the heart of this “race” I participate in?  Is it my health?  Fear of aging?  Competition?  Vanity?  What is it that motivates me to plan out the time, face the elements, suffer through the aches, and make myself downright uncomfortable at times?

Quickly my mind changes, focusing on my work/job.  Why do I get up in the morning?  What is at the heart of this thing that I do with the majority of my time every day?  Do I know why I do what I do?  Do my co-workers know?  Do we have a purpose?  Are we making a difference, or just making money?  Are we inspired, or indifferent?

With little hesitation, my psyche shifts to my spiritual life.  I claim to have deep conviction and passion about WHO I believe in, and the difference HE can make in my life and the life of others; does my life reflect that?  What really drives me?  Is it Love?  Conformity?  Gratitude?  Fear?

My consciousness sensing that it is “on-a-roll,” with this question of purpose, swings to my marriage, then to my children and grandchildren, next to my blog, to my music, friendships, volunteer activities…..ahhhhhhhh!

Why do I do the things I do?  Why do I enter and run the “races” I run?

Sometimes that question is easy to answer – my wife, my children, my grandchildren…I love them.  Not that I don’t screw up some times (many times), and let my own selfishness trip me up.  But, overall I am driven by my love for them.

Yet, in many areas of our lives, we struggle to answer the question of purpose.  Without a clear understanding of “why,” we can waste a lot of time and effort on activities that bear no fruit, or we can find ourselves sitting on the sideline, or walking instead of running, because we have no motivation to run an aimless race.

Directionless

Imagine showing up at the starting line to run a marathon in the city of New York without any indication of where the finish line is located.  No signs, no mile markers, no volunteers to guide you.  All you know is that the finish line is 26.2 miles away.

How many extra miles will you end up running to find the finish line?  How many additional hours will you spent trying to make your way to the tape?  Will you even find the end?  Will you stay motivated enough to continue on, or will you eventually quit?

Eventually your run becomes a jog, your jog becomes a walk, and then you stop.  You try to start running again, but with no idea how to reach the finish, you slow down, and then stop again.  You pick back up and run every once in a while, because “you’re supposed to,” or, it’s the “right thing to do,” not because you have purpose or direction.   Soon, even though you may jog slowly once in a while, you’ve forgotten what you even signed-up for.

Does this reflect your job/work?  Your activities?  Your Spiritual walk?  Your life?

We need purpose

Purpose determines how you spent your time and energy.   Purpose is the driving force of why you do what you do.  Purpose gives direction; it gives guidance.  Purpose creates passion.  It answers the question, “is this the right thing to do?”  Purpose gives you stability in turbulent times.  Purpose leads to high performance.

Want to move mountains?  Withstand the storms?  Create vision? Find your purpose!

Run for the Prize!

The Minister and the Peon
Unknown Author

ONE day, a king of Travancore overheard his peon mutter to himself, 'This is an unjust age. I who work all day long am paid seven rupees per month whereas the minister who rolls about in motor cars and idles the whole time is paid two thousand rupees per month. What injustice!'

The king wanted to show the peon the injustice of his remarks. Just then, he saw a palanquin in the distance and asked the peon to go and enquire who it was who was travelling in the palanquin. The peon went running and came back and said: 'It is Sankaracharya.' 'Of which Mutt?' asked the king. The peon went running again and came back panting and said, 'Of Sringeri Mutt.' 'Where is His Holiness coming from?' asked the king. Again ran the peon and came back and said, 'From Shencottah.' 'Where does he go to?' asked the king. The peon took another trip and came back and said, 'The Holiness is going to Kaladi.' 'Is His Holiness going to stop here' asked the king. Again ran the peon and came back and said, 'Yes.' 'For how long?' asked the king. The peon had another exhausting run and came back tired and said 'For a day.'

'Where does he intend to stop?' asked the king. The exhausted peon again ran to the palanquin which was going further and further and came back and said, 'In the Mutt attached to the temple.'

'Will His Holiness be able to see me?' asked the king. The peon had an even more exhausting journey and came back and said, 'Yes.'

'When?' asked the king. Again, the peon dragged his weary body to the palanquin which was now nearing the Mutt and came and said, 'At 3 p.m.' and fell down in a heap utterly exhausted even in the presence of the king.

The king sent for his minister, who had not witnessed any of the above incidents, and asked him to go and enquire who had come in a palanquin that morning. The minister returned in half an hour and in the presence of the peon told the king, 'Sire, it is the Sankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt His Holiness came from Shencottah and is going to Kaladi. He will be stopping at the local Mutt for a day and will be able to see Your Highness at 3 p.m. to-day. If possible, His Holiness will also conduct the service at the temple this evening.'

'You see,' said the king turning to the peon, 'what took you nine weary journies and five hours has taken the minister only half an hour and one single journey. Now you see the reason why you are paid only seven rupees and he two thousand rupees.' The peon stood confounded with shame.

A friend of mine witnessed what I am about to tell you.

Several years ago, a well dressed older gentleman entered an elevator in a tall office building, apparently consumed with whatever business he was taking care of that day.

It was mid-afternoon of the work day, and there were only three people on that elevator -- the gentleman, a middle-aged woman and my friend -- all being transported down to the street level.

Out of the blue, the woman starts crying. Taken aback, the gentleman and my friend didn't know what to say or do.

"I'm sorry. I'm making a spectacle of myself," said the woman, sobbing and searching her purse for a handkerchief.

The gentleman offered her his.  "Thank you," she said, "I just don't know anymore. I'm usually not like this, but I just don't know anymore."

"I'm sure everything will turn out fine -- don't you worry, Miss," he said.

"No.  No.  It's not that.  I have so much to be grateful for," she said as she shook her head.  "It's not what you think."

Not wanting to pry, her elevator mates stood speechless.

"It's just that I don't fit in.  I've never fit in.  I do everything I'm supposed to do, but I don't feel like I belong," she said, wiping the tears from her eyes.

The elevator continued its downward journey as the distraught woman tried to compose herself.

"I'm so embarrassed. You'll have to pardon me. Things have just caught up to me," she said.

"Miss, I have something I want to tell you, if you have just a minute," the old man said.

The elevator opened as they reached the lobby.

"Oh yes, please, I need to get my mind focused on something," she said.

They left the elevator and walked into the busy lobby. The old man turned to my friend, and invited him to join them.  By this time, my friend's curiosity had got the best of him.

The old man's face had some well worn lines. His gray hair bespoke of his experience, and his dark eyes peered over his bifocals, lending confidence to his words.

"I don't know what your situation is Ma'am," he said politely. "However, I was in the same boat many years ago. And while I was in my little personal crisis, I felt the same way. Moreover, I came to find out that everyone, sooner or later, feels like they don't fit in."

"Sometimes it happens early in life in school.  Teenagers are thrown together with strangers and told to fit in. It's almost an impossible situation.  Then, the same thing happens at work, or with your neighbors at home. You always feel like you are the odd man out. Everyone else seems to be happy. They look comfortable. They look like they belong, and you always feel like you are an intrusion. I know all about that," said the old man.

"I know exactly what you're saying," the woman said as she nodded in agreement.

"A lot of people avoid those feelings by limiting contact. Watching television, or reading books, or sitting in front of a computer provides a comfort zone, and if you can afford to do that, I suppose that's fine if that's what you want to do.  However, for many of us, the real world cannot be escaped. We have to work.  We have to make a living. And we have to interact with relatives and strangers in settings everyday. And, Ma'am, this is what I want to tell you..."

"You see, it's all in how you look at it. Some people face those feelings and settings with a sense of adventure. Others face the same situation with dread. Yes, we all have different personalities and some of us are more sensitive and vulnerable than others. However, if you can remember just a couple of things, it will make your life a whole lot easier," he said.

"Do you work in this building?" he asked.

"Yes," she said.

"Well, this is my first time here and I had no idea where I was going, and had never met the person I was going to see. Now, who is the one who feels like they don't fit in?" he asked.  "But, somehow, I got through it, and I'll be walking out that front door in a minute without a scratch."

She and my friend chuckled.

"You can safely assume that the people you are interacting with feel as out of place as you do. So, you simply practice the Golden Rule and make them feel as comfortable as you can. They don't teach the Golden Rule in school, so this is something you have to pick up along the way. Suffice it to say, if you make others feel comfortable, they will reciprocate."

"Second, remember that in order to sense that feeling of belonging, you have to feel you belong to yourself.  In other words, if you aren't settled and comfortable with yourself first, you'll be a fish out of water. Be confident about what you believe. Be true to your feelings. You don't have to pretend to be someone else. Just be yourself and let the world appreciate what you have to offer.  Everyone is good at something, including you. Offer what you are good at, and who knows, maybe the world might even pay you for it!", the old man said as he started to laugh.

"You're not alone," he said as he patted the woman's shoulder.

"Don't go nuts trying to force yourself to fit in.  There are too many holes and too many pegs out there to even try. Just have a little faith in yourself, associate with people who lift you up, and you'll soon find folks coming to you for help. And when you get lost in helping them, you won't even think about fitting in. At that point, you won't be looking at life, you'll be a part of it."

"Oh, thank you," she said, as the old man walked toward the street.

My friend just stood there, not saying a word. At that split second of awkwardness, the woman and my friend extended their hands and shook.

"Nice to meet you," they both said at the same time. And then, just as quickly and simultaneously, they said, "Have a nice day," as they both went in different directions.

While they never knew each others' names, it was an encounter they would never forget.
