Bayham garden event growing like a weed
Gardeners sink their trowels into global warming

The annual Port Burwell Seedy Saturday has moved this year to Vienna to take advantage of the larger venue offered by the Dancing Creek retreat center.

With events happening all day on Saturday, February 19th, this year’s Seedy Saturday will focus on “gardening in a new climate” examining the impacts of climate change on horticulture and agriculture.

Speakers include University of Western Ontario’s Prof. Hugh Henry who is researching plant responses to changes in soil freezing in Southern Ontario. Kevin Kavanagh of South Coast Gardens will discuss “zone pushing” at his nursery near Long Point and his own success with plants once considered impossible to overwinter. And perennial favourite Kim Delaney of Hawthorn Farm Organic Seeds returns again this year with useful advice and practical wisdom on gardening for resilience.

Seedy Saturday also includes: seed vendors, a swap table, two morning workshops, a tour of Dancing Creek, a nature walk at the award-winning Otter River Farms led by the Otter Valley Naturalists, and plenty of opportunity for gardeners to meet, socialize, and share knowledge.

Seedy Saturday is part of a series of independent local events that have sprung up across the country in the past twelve years. They are public events, for the betterment of the local gardening community, organized and operated by volunteers.

They bring together home gardeners, seed savers, native plant collectors, agriculture conservation groups, and community gardeners as well as local seed companies that sell open-pollinated varieties of vegetables, fruits, flowers, grains and herbs.

Admission to the event is $10. Tickets should be purchased in advance (the event regularly sells out) and proceeds go to Seeds of Diversity, a charitable organization dedicated to the conservation, documentation and use of public-domain non-hybrid plants of Canadian significance.

Dancing Creek: Adventures in Balance Inc. is a retreat center that offers year-round programs for individuals and organizations, including children.

The event is being organized by local citizens in partnership with Dancing Creek: Adventures in Balance Inc. and the Otter Valley Naturalists Club.
