I also have ideopathic peripheral neuropathy, and have had it for about seven years. My ankles swell sometimes, but also sometimes they itch like crazy. My left side is worse, too, and my symptoms are burning sensations in both feet, sometimes sharp, stabbing pains in the left foot. I have been prescribed diazepam and clonazepam to use at night to help me sleep. I can't say it works wonderfully, but my health plan will not cover neurotinin (sp?). I'm not sure about Lyrica, haven't asked for that as a side affect is weight gain, and I'm already overweight. Have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and insulin resistance, but am not diabetic.
I cannot wear "normal" shoes, and wear sandals year 'round. In winter I also wear thin, loose socks.
