Question about pain killers   Message List

Hi, I'm fairly new on this board. My wife has (non-diabetic) PN and
nothing she's taken has seemed to help. For example, the docs up'd
her dosage of Neurontin until she was taking 2700 mg per day, and
all it did was make her feet swell up like two poisoned puppies.
The pain was excruciating, it looked like they were going to explode!

When I discovered a side effect of Neurontin was swelling feet I
very slowly reduced her dosage to zero with no change in the PN
symptoms. At least her feet look normal now.

The only meds she's taking for PN now are Amitriptylin, a duragesic
patch and many hydrocodone tabs a day. She has the tendency to fall
asleep a lot (not suprising).

Recently we attended a seminar on pain management, and one of the
speakers mentioned that for the type of nerve damage typical of PN
and Fibromyalgia, typical narcotic pain killers don't do much to
relieve the pain.

What has been the experience some of you have had with narcotic-type
pain meds? Do they seem to help?

Thank you,

Peter
