I have been on disability for 6 years. To start with, my back was so bad it was obvious I could barely walk.  I applied, sent in all the documentation and then was sent to the SS appointed doctor for an exam.

 

There are two types of social security benefits:  SSI - which is based on your income and SSDI which is based totally on your disability and does not take income into consideration. I get SSDI.  After Medicare was taken out of my check, I  get $566 a month.

 

I didn't hire an attorney. I wouldn't unless you are denied.  If you gather enough supporting documentation including lab and XRay reports and all doctors you have seen in the last year for this condition, that will help a lot.   I didn't even have to appeal. I was approved immediately.

 

Once you are awarded social security benefits it takes 18 months before you are eligible for Medicare.

 

The above applies for Kansas. Your particular state may be a bit different.

 

I started out by talking to the people in the local SS office. They were very nice, helpful, and I feel honest with me. If I didn't understand they would patiently restate until I did understand.
