Hi Vickie
Thanks for your inquiry. I will be happy to share.
Our group meets approximately 4 times a year. We meet at Lutheran Hillside
Village which is a large nursing complex in Peoria.
We have nurses from the Catholic, Lutheran, and Methodist denominations. We are
about 12 nurses.
As far as structure. Mary Jo Holford, who is the parish nurse at St. Mark's
Lutheran Church in Washington, IL. is our conveener. We are funded by a grant
from Thrivent. Once a year, there is a seminar in Davenport Iowa which is
usually quite good. The group will fund half the fee for this event to members.
As far as programs, We usually have a very educational program which lasts about
an hour. We often incorporate the chaplin of Hillside village in these
programs. We have had programs on Death and Dieing, Dealing with troubling
situations in our ministries, and many more. The last one , which I was not
able to attend was presented by The Center for the blind. This was a
interactive presentation on dealing with the sight impaired. I have been
involved with this group for about 3 years. The program, combined with the
networking is usually very helpful.
As far as structure. This is really a very loosely structured group although it
seems to function well. If you would want to contact Mary Jo I am sure she
would be happy to talk to you about the group. I don't have her E-Mail but I do
have a phone number for the church. The address is
St. Mark's Lutheran Church
200 S. Main St.
Washington, Il. 61521
Phone 309 444-4618
It is ironic that you are from Louisville, Ky. I graduated from the old Baptist
Hospital School of Nursing in Louisville almost 45 years ago. I love your town.
This should also give you a pretty good idea that I am not exactly young.
Hope this has helped. If I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate
to contact me.
Mary Ann

Subject: [ParishNurse] Quarterly meetings for support, information,
fellowship...
Mary Ann,
I noticed in your email response to Joyce that you mentioned your Parish
Nurse group meeting 4 times a year...educational programs... lunch...
Is there any additional information you can share about how that group
functions, the kind of educational meetings that have been helpful,
etc. I recently served as a consultant/speaker for a group of
clergy/congregations/Parish Nurses and they are at a point, several
years into their ministries, and could benefit from such a structure.
I have observed that after a cluster of nurses have gone through a PN
training program and have been involved in the ministry for a year or 2,
they need a realistic structure for support, ongoing ideas, etc. By then
they have had varying degrees of "success" instituting Health Ministries
in their congregations.
Also, have you found it possible or helpful to include others involved
in the ministry in the quarterly meetings, e.g. pastors or others on the
Health Ministries team?
I appreciate whatever you can share from your experience.
