Just by terminology a Parish Nurse is an RN that has recieved the basic
training.( 30+ hours), of a program recognized by HMA or IPRNC. This is also
recognized by ANA as a speciality in nursing, with a certification progrm (
National board being developed.) Standards of care are zoning in on NANDA,NIC
and NOC for documentation. I am also a non-paid PN working one day a week in
the office. I am the individual who is the networker, I really try not to do
hands on nursing, because there are facilities that already do that. And by
definition PN's do not do hands on nursing. Why duplicate??? I set up
programs,BP checks, strong education and spiritual bases material. Hope this
helped. Theresa

Generally speaking, an RN would be required to have
their hands in the program at some level. There are
many facets to health ministry that lay people can do,
though there are many that only an RN should do.
Anyone can chair the committee though, provided a
nurse is sitting on the board too. If you are unpaid,
why would your church chair worry about down-sizing
the position?

I would say from a personal point of view, it would
atleast need to be a nurse or perhaps a PA...someone
with assessment skills and knowldge of wellness
programs.
But thsts just me. We have a new Health Ministry at
our church that myself and another nurse (FNP)
coordinate. So far we have not done anything that
LPN's or nurses aids couild not do, but we are still
in our infancy and don't know what God has in store
for us.
Hope it helps
God Bless, Scott

Does anyone out there know of church health ministries
that function
without a parish nurse or trained health minister? I
have put in a
proposal for an official health ministry in our
church. I have been
acting as a parish nurse in an unofficial capacity for
over a year.
While the networking team is satisfied with the work
that I have been
doing, they are questioning whether a registered nurse
is "required"
to maintain a faith and health ministry. I guess they
are looking
down the road if I leave or resign. I feel that an RN
is required but
I thought I would see if there are any ministries out
there without
one. BTW I have proposed this as a non salaried staff
position.
