Barbara-
The Parish Nurses at my church started 5 years ago and has grown leaps and
bounds with small steps. The group is all volunteer nurses from the parish. We
started with a quarterly blood pressure screening after each mass as a way to
introduce ourselves to the parish. We were warmly accepted and went from there.
We have a news letter in the bulletin on health topics a couple of times a year.
We coordinate the volunteers that visit our hospitalized and homebound
parishioners. We came to realize the wealth of non-nurse volunteers in our
parish. We hold an annual blood drive and one evening education seminar a year.
To do something for the kids we held a presentation on nursing as a career and
do ID cards through the local sheriffs department. Each year seems to add
something new and as always we are always looking for more nurses from the
parish to join. Sorry to ramble but we are very proud of our accomplishments
since no one knew what they were doing when we started. Now
people in the parish know that there is always a nurse nearby.
