I'm sorry that I didn't post this sooner. I've had a week! Of course, we all
have right?
In my walk to Jerusalem here is what I have done.
I first determined how far it is from my city to Jerusalem about as straight
as the crow flies. I don't worry about walking on water, because we go with
Jesus and he can walk on water.
I used these websites for assistance, but then some of it was just hit or

Next, I had some help, and we took a LONG wall in the fellowship hall and
used butcher block paper and painted it. We used brown for a trail that winds
back and forth the entire length of the wall four times. Then we painted our
state of Tennessee at the top in ORANGE for the "Volunteer state" because this
is
a volunteer program, and put a picture of our church in the center where was
start from. Then I painted some trees and mountains (very child like painting)
to symbolize East Tennessee, and north/South Carolina. I marked every so often
landmarks, like; Knoxville, Winston-Salem, then I hit ocean, and it's a LOT
of blue! We used a light brown to symbolize desert, then I marked several areas
that symbolize Paul's journeys, and finally a map of Jerusalem (one of my
kids found it in a National Geographic) at the end. I then use graph paper cut
in
strips, slightly smaller than the trail and color with pencil each square for
each mile someone walks. I actually use the scale 1 Sq= 2 miles. Then I write
with Black Sharpie Marker WHO walked it, and how many miles.
I use the equation 20 minutes aerobic exercise= 1 mile walked.
Exercise is described as:
Running/walking/biking
rowing machine
golf/tennis/bowling
pilates/yoga/spinning
anything that can get your body moving and your heart rate up.
Exercise is not: video games (I had one of the kids ask me if that counted)
To kick it off, I had my husband (a former professional clown) and my
daughter, perform a small clown skit about going to Jerusalem. Everyone still
talks
about the clowns that worshiped with them!
EVERYONE is involved. Kids turn in their cards use a business card or recipe
card and just write the dates and miles down and I tally them up.
Now, I have several prizes that I think I'm going to start giving out, this
next month. A random draw sort of thing. During lent, I used a devotional to
use in companion with the walk. This month, I am throwing down the gauntlet and
challenging the men against the women to do more exercise. The women of our
church have been getting together and doing video tapes: tae bo and now we are
doing pilates. We're going to try Tai chi in the future. We meet M-W-F after
work. We face our Walk to Jerusalem wall as we do our exercise right there in
the fellowship hall.
WE have a very small church. About 50-60 people including children. This is
working for us so far. We've done over 1000 miles this year! It's 7000+ to
Jerusalem. We have a goal of getting there by Christmas. I think we'll have a
party when we get there.
This is my version. So far it is successful. I make sure I make announcements
during the beginning of service...I include it in my newsletter along with
some sort of exercise news or health news, This and only 2 other projects will
be done this year. The other hopefully will be a workshop on Advance
directives. The other in the fall I'm going to do a series of diet/health
meetings. Not
sure what that will be yet, but I'm sure I'll come up with something!
Hope this helps! Feel free to email me, and please use any part of this that
would meet your needs!
Be blessed
