Hi - That's good news on the pregnancy. Hang in there... I had another thought this afternoon while driving home from Jenny's almost 3 hour eval at childrens.. ( I started and almost finished a book believe it or not in that time!),.... a link listing good books for parenting preemies....etc...

Robin,
This is fantastic, thanks! I believe we can link to the stores like the Preemie Store, PreemiesRus, etc., with no legal interference. It would be free advertising for them.
The
list of providers is fine if we preface it by saying that these docs have been utilized by our graduate parents and come recommended. We, of course, could not use a list of "don't go here's", as that wouldn't be ethical.
I love the idea about the parent's list, and support sites for specific diagnosis. I know I had the hardest time finding info about CP.
All I need is the OK from Dr. Anderson and the content suggestions. I find that it is easier for Leo and I to get the info on our site if we don't have to do all the research as well as the coding.
As far as my pregnancy is concerned... I am in my 27th week, and still holding strong. My cervix is now 5 cm and the
Transabdominal Cerclage is still high and tight and hasn't moved a millimeter. I can't believe my good fortune so far. Both twins are girls, and the docs think I will be able to make it to June or maybe the first week of July! Thanks for asking.

Hi Lisa - I wasn't able to make Saturday's meeting. I like the look of the website so far. As far as content - here are some suggestions for links:
-Websites for various diagnoses
-List of providers (therapists, MD's) throughout MA and surrounding states (if we can do this without any legal liability)
-Resources such as preemie stores/sites for clothing, preemie dolls ...etc (again if we can do this without any legal liability)
- Diagnosis specific support groups
Message board -- It would be nice if the list of members included
name and address (maybe just the town?) and names and ages of children
Hope that helps.
How are things going with you and your pregnancy?

Hello Lisa and Leo,
The template looks good. We are probably going to need to work the Caritas Logo onto the page. Sue has a good quality jpeg of the logo that she can email you. As for content let’s make this an agenda item for this Saturday’s meeting. Can you email the group and ask them to look at the template and come prepared with suggestions about content for our next meeting.
Thanks

Dear Dr. Anderson,
Here is a basic template of the site. Nothing on it is permanent, everything on it can be changed, however, Leo and I feel that we should use this as a template to construct the site.
What we need now is for the Team to decide the content of the site. For example, Research sites, Specific Information relative to the CSEMC NICU, etc.
Each link in the columns to the left and right will reference a specific page whether is it documents, photos, staff bios, etc. We need to start thinking about the index of the site in regard to content.
Please email or call me (508-788-7763) with any ideas or suggestions. Ideally we would like to see this board up and running (with
only occasional construction pages) by Mother's Day. Giving us a month's lead time on the Walk.

Subject: Nanny Hire Questions
Hi All,
We are getting ready to hire our once-in-a while babysitter as our fulltime
nanny upon her graduation from highschool in June. We were paying her
$12.50 p/h (which will work out to $500 per week for fulltime work). Is
this an "ok" rate? We are planning on sending her to infant/child CPR
certification on our dime as well as offering her 2-3 weeks paid vacation
too. Is there anything else we need to worry about/offer/take care of?
Please let me know ASAP. Thanks!

I'm passing along information about an upcoming event at the Wellesley Booksmith that many of you may find interesting. Jenny Minton, will be speaking about her new book on her experience with IVF, pregnancy, prematurity, twins and more on Tuesday, May 9th at 6:30 PM at the Wellesley Booksmith at 82 Central Street, Wellesley, MA.
Jenny Minton underwent in-vitro fertilization and gave birth to twin boys at 31 weeks. They spent over two months in the NIC unit in a New York hospital, and I'm happy to say they're both doing extremely well today at 3 years old, and Jenny has had another son, also through IVF, since then who was not born prematurely. Happy endings abound here!
With THE EARLY BIRDS, Jenny has written a memoir of motherhood in the world of modern medicine, and for a generation of women who are navigating the uncharted (and nearly unregulated) world of reproductive medicine, THE EARLY BIRDS will be a welcome find. But the book really is a universal tale--all mothers will connect with Jenny's timeless struggle to understand the forces of God, science, fate, and fortune in her boy's lives. Jenny's book illuminates the highs and lows of the first year of motherhood that all mothers know well.

Lisa, we moved to Newport News, VA in the Port Warwick area. That would be great if you don't mind asking the women in your group if they can recommend a pediatrician. Thank you for offering. I hope all is going well with your pregnancy and they wait to come out when they are due :-)!

Our twin daughters, Charlotte and Grace, were born at 32 weeks on 2/1/05 at St. E's and are now 14 months. Our oldest (by 1 minute!) Charlotte has had the same issues with night terrors. They are caused when there is interuption between the sleep states, light to deep REM. We have tried everything to aleviate these ocurrances, from a sound soother, music CD lullabys, a warm bottle before bed. When she has them all we can do is comfort her by speaking softly and rubbing her back. It is best not to pick them up because they are still asleep. It is much harder on the parents than the children. They eventually grow out of this I am told. She seems to have them worse when she is overtired.
As for the head shaking, both of our girls do it and it scared the heck out of me when they first started to do it. I called the pediatrician immediately. She calmed my fears and said it was perfectly normal and that they just like the sensation...kind of like when older kids spin around and around...silly kids! Charlotte has even taken to spinning around like an airplane with her hads extended! Anyways, nothing to worry about.
Good luck settling in to your new home! :o)

Hi everyone!
Hope everyone is doing well. We have moved to VA and have not found a pediatrician yet (all the ones that have been referred to us by local people have a waiting list of about 5 months). I was wondering if anyone had any input about the following situation with our son Ben. Ben is almost 9 months old (6 months corrected). He was born at 25 weeks gestation and was just
over 2lbs. He spent 64 days at St. E's.
Ben is doing really well and seems to like the nice weather here in VA. We have one concern though. He has recently started to shake is head from side-to-side, especially when he is tired but not exclusively when he is tired. He also rapidly moves is left arm up and slams it down a bunch of times. It is always his left arm although he reaches and grabs objects with both hands. His eyes are open when he does this head movement. It is almost like he is shaking his head "no" really fast. If we happen to be holding him when he does this, he bangs his head hard against our head. It seems to be getting more frequent every day. At the same time he has also developed the habit of chewing his tongue or cheek (we haven't figured out what he is chewing yet). Nate and I have read all kinds of websites and googled a ton but there is
conflicting information as usual. It sounds like it may be normal infant development but we wanted to see if anyone else that has experience with preemies has experienced anything like this. It has us a little freaked out! Ben doesn't seem bothered by it though. He is eating fine and sleeping pretty good (no less than usual) although he did wake up in the middle of the night the other night and started screaming really loud, when I went to pick him up and comfort him he seemed like he was still sleeping. I have read that it could have been a night terror. Thank god we haven't experience another one of those yet.
Well, sorry this is so long. We appreciate any feedback! Hope everyone is doing well in Boston and we will see you in Sept (and maybe at the walk in June). Thank you, Angela

I am so glad to hear that Ben is doing well. And sorry to hear that there seems to be an issue finding a pedi. Julia (my 27 weeker) had issues with her legs moving on their own (clonus), and she liked to bop her head around a lot. When I talked to our Pedi about the head movements, he said it was experimenting with movement and it was normal.
If you tell me where you are in VA, I might be able to help you with a Pedi. I am part of a message board (www.miraclebabies.org) that has a few people from VA, and maybe they could help with getting you a good pedi that knows how to deal with our wonderful impatient children (My way of saying Preemie).
As far as the night terrors, welcome to the world of kids that nobody ever told you about. Julia gets them every now and then, even at 3! They are the strangest thing. I found that during these "events" if I just go into her room and lay my hand on her shoulder, she calms right down. I do remember how scared I was the first time it happened though. I could have sworn she was having a seizure because her eyes were closed. First time mom jitters, we always think the worst!
Hope to see you in June... but I will most likely miss the walk because I will be delivering my twinkies (I hope not any sooner).
Good luck in your new home. And as soon as I hear back from you about where you want you pedi located, I will try to send you some names and numbers.

Well, sorry this is so long. We appreciate any feedback! Hope everyone is doing well in Boston and we will see you in Sept (and maybe at the walk in June). Thank you, Angela

He was born at 25 weeks gestation and was just over 2lbs.
Nate and I have read all kinds of websites and googled a ton but there is conflicting information as usual. Hello-
Great work. I really like how it has started and I think once everyone
gets together on Saturday we will have some great ideas brought up. Let me
know if you need anything before then
Thanks
Sue
Please review the attached document and come prepared with suggestions about content for our website for the meeting on Saturday. The links to the Mock-up are listed in the original email to Dr. Anderson at the bottom of this mail.
The attached word document is just an aid to get us started. Hope to see you all at the meeting Saturday, April 22, at 10 am. For those of you who are not able to attend Saturday's meeting, please feel free to email me at home with your suggestions prior to Saturday morning.
Subject: RE: Website Mock-up. Please review and respond.

Ideally we would like to see this board up and running (with only occasional construction pages) by Mother's Day. Giving us a month's lead time on the Walk.
Hi everyone,
Please welcome JW... Here is a brief introduction.
JW, please fill us in on how your twin girls are doing now.

The pictures of the girls are wonderful. I especially love the pics
of them with their face and hands full of cake. Although a great
runner up is the "baby in a bag" picture.
Isn't it amazing how far they have come in just 12 months?? It just
constantly amazes me at Julia's birthdays!
Thank you SO much for sharing the pictures!!

Hi All,
Just wanted to let you know I've added three new links to our group:
1) Nurse Imagines - Nurses share their thoughts/feelings about caring
for preemies and their families
2) Parent Imagines - Parent's share their thoughts/feelings about
prematurity
3) Support groups - lists several on-line support groups for parents of
preemies.
Hope you find this helpful.

Thanks for thinking of us! The good news is that we saw the Behavioral Specialist from Children's this week. She whole heartily thinks that James does not have any behavioral "disorders" but just some behavioral "issues"
They tested him academically and the score range is 85-115. He scored over 115 on 80% of the tests. The 20% he scored in the 90's but those were speech and phonics, and given all he has been through that is extremely high also.
His issues are he is old enough to know he doesn't like something or doesn't want to do it but is to emotionally under developed to know what those feelings are or can plan ahead to know what they will be. She suggested to get him some books that will explain feelings and referred us to a behavioral counselor. I am going to see what they have to say but the one we are working with through the school seems very good and conveniently comes to the house after work! Bonus points! If the new one says about the same we will stick with the school one because it will also be easier to get the teacher on board with the plan.
I already knew that he was too smart for MY own good and that there was really a long term problem -- but it nice to hear the people in the white coats say it to you.
Now all Jim and I have to do is stick to the plans we are making and follow thru as a team.
Its hard not to fall back on "We are just happy he is breathing and his heart works" but it will be for the best in the long run because he will learn to be the good boy we know he is.
Well, the feeding pump is going off so maybe now I can get back to sleep.
Hope everyone is well and I will see you at the next meeting.
Thank you for the information and yes, it is horrible to watch. The worst part is that I feel like a bad mom because I can't fix it, I standby helpless to alleviate her fear. To make matters worse, it happens during the night after I'm worn out from the activites of the day and I just have nothing left, get frustrated because I can't help her and then feel bad for getting frustrated with her. Hopefully it is something that will pass in time.

Hi Tracey - I don't have any experience with night terrors but I did bring my daughter to the Pediatric Sleep Clinic at Children's Hospital when she was very young for something else. The head of that dept, Richard Ferber, Md has a book out there called "Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems" that does have a section on night terrors and nightmares.
Good luck with this. It must be horrible for you to watch.

Does anyone have experience with night terrors? I was told at a recent NICU reunion that preemies are especially susceptible to suffering from these bouts of terror. My g/g twins were born at 32 weeks on 2/1/05 and Charlotte has been plagued by them ever since (Grace had been okay). As I understand it, her eyes are open and she appears awake but she is caught in a nightmare. Screaming to the point of hyperventilation and causing her to vomit. It is so terrible to watch and all you can do is comfort her. I was in tears right along with her last night. My husband had to comfort both of us. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you. Sleepless and desperate...

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. My son Benjamin, born at 36 weeks, also had some night terrors, but not to the degree you are experiencing. I can remember him looking like he was awake one night, holding his little hands curled in front of his face screaming "No! No!" and calling for me. I could not wake him up, it was very frightening, but then he woke up and turned to me and asked for some juice. I did speak to the pediatrician, who told me never ask him if he remembered anything from his night terrors because they happen in a different part of the psyche (?sp) and the child never remembers them. Have a talk with your pediatrician, if you haven't already done so. Benjamin grew out of his by the time he was 3 1/2. They seemed to happen more often when he didn't feel good. Good Luck.

Sometimes it may help to have the diagnosis (or diag-non-sence as it may be) to get James the attention he deserves from the school. The ADD diagnosis has long been abused by school systems, with teachers who have too many students and not enough patience.
Believe me I understand FULLY about handling 12 things at once. James is only 4 years old. It seems that any 4 year old is going to have a hard time sitting down and doing schoolwork. My Julia, who is 3, is a 27 weeker and she has the attention span of a flea. But her teachers said that all the kids are like that at 3 - 4.
Would getting the ADD diagnosis get James put into a smaller class with more attention, or would it only get him put on ridlin (or whatever they are giving toddlers this year for it)?
Subject: Re: [Parents_As_Partners] Please Welcome a New Parents_As_Partners member Kr...
We just went to James' PTA meeting and was told by his speech therapist that James' has an attention problem. He does not use total body control and will look around the room while completing the task that was asked of him. He also can't sit still for ANY length of time. When I called his pedi he didn't want to see you because he knew James would fail the ADD test she would give him and he didn't want that on his file yet -- he refereed us to a behavioral specialist out of Children's to see if it was just something he had to learn to control. He has always been very busy but we just kept saying he was making up for the 17 months he spent in the hospital. Maybe it should had been addressed eailer but I can only have 12 things at a time and breathing eating and a heart problem seemed more important that he could only focus on the task at hand for 2 minutes, Now he is eating us out of house and home hasen't been sick since May (knock on wo! od FAST!) and his heart problem is taking care of itself nicely - so now I can move on to this problem.
We hope to get any kind of answer before he enters kindergarten in the fall at gets a label he may or may no deserve that will carry through till he graduates. We are hoping he will lean to control his body and impulsiveness and that will be all it is!

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I've been so busy - I'm sure everyone is with Christmas almost here. Since Benjamin has been in school for 3 calendar years they needed to do a re-evaluation for his IEP. He met with his regular speech therapist, his regular SPED teacher, the school psychologist, ocupational therapist, and the guidance counselor. Of course, since being in school for 3 years now they know he has trouble focusing and paying attention. The reports came back as I expected, he is behind academically, somewhat related to his speech delay, and the school psychologist had the teacher and I fill out a Connors rating scale. We both scored on the same topics (her scores higher of course) which relate to ADHD combined type. I was not completely surprised, since my husband has ADHD. I was really happy to hear from all of the teachers that although Benjamin scored average and below average in most things, they all felt he has the right
abilities to get his schoolwork done and learn just like his peers.
One thing I read recently in the Boston Globe that was very interesting was how preemies have some behavioral and sensory issues that can possible be prevented by gentler treatment in the NICU. The article mentioned something about brain scans of the frontal lobe of preemies born in the last decade as related to how they are cared for differently today. My friend Sally who is a nurse recently attended a meeting on ADHD which they said is involved in the frontal lobe of the brain. I would be interested to see how these studies evolve in the future.
Well, have to go get the kids to bed. I will let you know if I can attend the January meeting. Do you know the time & place? If I don't hear from you before, have a great Christmas!

It is nice to know that Benjamin is doing well. WOW first grade?? We just put Julia in school (at 3) and I am having some issues with it. I can't even imagine what Kindegarten or First grade will bring.
If you don't mind my asking, what indicators have they found that leads the school to believe ADHD?
Julia is addicted to our cat Mortimer. I have never seen a kid so intent on loving on every inch of an animal like that. Luckily, Morti is extremely tolerant. (A little steak bribe goes a long way!!)
