I am posting this with Dana's permission of course. Her son Anluan
has had a stroke. Last Wednesday, during the heat wave, many schools
closed. St. Mary's for the Deaf did not. He was put on a bus that
was not air conditioned despite a mandate stating that it was
necessary for him since he has no thermoregulatory capabilities. He
was on the bus for almost an hour at over 100 degrees. He became
unconscious and did not become responsive at all for over an hour.
After a few days at Children's Hospital, he was flown to NYC for
evaluation. He has now been released, and is fairly stable, but he
has lost a lot of functioning that he and Dana have been working so
hard for. He is having constant seizures and is no longer able to
walk. The doctor in NYC told her his only hope at recovery was
perhaps a stem cell transplant. There's a chance she may have to go
to the Dominican Republic to have this done, and it of course won't
be covered under insurance.
He's a resilient little boy, so I am hoping with our prayers and
healing energies he may recover better than the doctors are
expecting. I have also called channel 4 to let them know about the
bus incident and they were very interested in the story. At this
point we're hoping some brilliant people can come up with a fund
raising idea to help fund the stem cell transplant. I am also still
looking around for places in the US that might do stem cell
transplants because he does have fetal stem cells available from his
sibling's umbilical cord blood.
If anybody can help me with brainstorming on ways we can help, please
jump in.
Peace,
Diana
