SPEAKERS
William Shaw, Ph.D.
Biochemist, Director of The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc.
Dr. William Shaw received a Ph.D. in biochemistry and human
physiology from
the Medical University of South Carolina. He is board certified in the
fields of clinical chemistry and toxicology by the American Board of
Clinical Chemistry. He has supervised large endocrinology, nutritional
biochemistry, and toxicology and immunology departments in positions
at the
Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Smith Kline Laboratories in
Atlanta. He
was Director of Clinical Chemistry, Endocrinology and Toxicology at
Children
's Mercy Hospital, the teaching hospital of the University of
Missouri at
Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Shaw is now the Director of The
Great
Plains Laboratory for Health, Nutrition and Metabolism in Lenexa,
Kansas
specializing in urine metabolic testing for autism spectrum
disorders. He is
author of "Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD" and is a frequent
speaker at autism conferences worldwide. He is the stepfather of a
child
with autism and has helped thousands of parents and physicians
successfully
contribute to improving the lives of autistic children.
Lori Knowles
Mother of a Child with Autism
Lori is a mother of four children, with her youngest son receiving a
diagnosis of autism at the age of 2.5 years. After her early
intervention
speech therapist gave her a copy of Dr. Shaw's "Biological Treatments
for
Autism and PDD", she began aggressively seeking all possible
interventions
that could help her child.
After extensive research and personal experience, Lori has become very
knowledgeable about the role that different therapies had in helping
her son
make the most significant progress. Lori currently works at the Great
Plains
Laboratory where she is an advocate for parents seeking to improve
their
children's lives. In addition, she has been a speaker at national and
international autism conferences and is the director of the parent
autism
support group called SPIN (Spectrum Support Intervention Network).
She will
share her journey from her son's birth, to diagnosis to the present
day and
his essential recovery for the purpose of educating and inspiring
others to
have hope and make a difference.
Mark Geier M.D., Ph.D. / David Geier
Pres. of Genetic Centers of America / Pres. of MedCon, Inc.
Mark and David Geier will present their epidemiological research on
the role
that thimerosal and MMR vaccines play in the current U.S. epidemic of
neurodevelopmental disorders. They will discuss their most recent
paper
published in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, entitled
"Thimerosal in Childhood Vaccines, Neurodevelopmental Disorders and
Heart
Disease in the United States." This paper presents strong
epidemiological
evidence for a link between neurodevelopmental disorders and mercury
exposure from thimerosal-containing childhood vaccines.
Dr. Mark Geier is a geneticist and president of the Genetic Centers of
America, which for the past 23 years has offered clinical prenatal
genetics
services. Dr.Geier has worked in the fields of molecular and cell
biology
and genetic engineering at the National Institute of Health for ten
years.
Dr. Geier has also been a professor at Johns Hopkins University
Hospital.
His work has resulted in numerous publications, several of which have
received national and international acclaim.
David Geier, Mark's 23 year old son, is president of MedCon, Inc., a
medical/legal consulting firm that offers consulting services to
plaintiff
and defense law firms. David has recently assisted his father in
doing a
comprehensive study of the VARS(Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting
System)
database to determine the prevalence of vaccine injury, and whether
it can
be correlated to the dramatic rise in the incidence of autism.
(At press time, David Geier's picture was unavailable)
Woody McGinnis, MD
Researcher and Educator
Woody McGinnis M.D., received his education at Dartmouth College and
the
University of Colorado. He has specialized in Behavioral Nutrition
for the
past decade, and devotes all his energies to education and research.
Originally motivated by his own son's physical and behavioral
challenges,
Dr. McGinnis finds the underlying physical illness is often the
primary
determinant of abnormal behavior in both children and adults with
diverse
diagnoses. Autism and AD(H)D are areas of particular interest. Sub
optimal
nutritional status, gastrointestinal pathology, food intolerance,
chronic
infections, and toxic accumulations typify children with these
disorders.
Dr. McGinnis has found that careful observation, laboratory testing
and
specific treatment of these physical problems can often lead to
substantial
improvement of difficult behavioral symptoms.
Victoria L. Ibric, M.D., Ph.D., BCIAC
Neurofeedback Trainer and Consultant
Dr. Victoria L. Ibric, is a board-certified instructor/mentor of
therapists
in Neuro/Biofeedback. Dr. Ibric graduated from medical school in
Bucharest,
Romania, and obtained her PhD in both immunology and health
psychology,
practicing for 7 years in virology-oncology.
Dr. Ibric trained in General Biofeedback at the Biofeedback Institute
of Los
Angeles with the Toomim's, and in EEG biofeedback with the Othmer's.
She
practices in Pasadena at the Therapy & Prevention Center, and she is a
consultant for UCLA - Pain Medicine Center, Kaiser Permanente, and
other
clinics. She provides Neuro/Biofeedback for stress-related disorders,
as
well as for peak-performance training. Neurofeedback training is
successful
for patients with chronic pain, sleep or tremor disorders, traumatic
brain
injury, depression/ anxiety, ADD/ADHD, autism, addictions and
seizures.
Andrea Wrenn
Owner/Director of the Sensory Learning Center
Andrea Wrenn, owner/director of the Sensory Learning Center of
Northern
Kentucky, will explain the Sensory LearningSM Program and its
benefits to
children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADD/ADHD, and
overall
learning and behavior problems. The Sensory LearningSM Program is a
supra-modal approach to developmental learning that unites auditory,
visual
and vestibular modalities into one 30-day drug-free intervention for
improving perception, understanding, and learning ability.
>From the Internet, Andrea discovered her 18-month-old son, Alex,
showed 10
of the 14 signs and symptoms of autism. Her son's nursery school
teacher
suggested he might be exhibiting autistic behavior. Her next step was
just
the sort of thing a devoted mother would do. Andrea launched an all-
out,
no-stone-unturned search for potential treatments for autism. Soon
she and
her family were on a plane to Boulder, Colorado, so Alex could enter
the
Sensory Learning Program at the Sensory Learning Institute.
Immediately,
Wrenn noticed a marked change, particularly in Alex's social skills.
Wrenn
has decided to bring the program home, halfway across the country, so
that
similarly affected children can have a new chance.
Andrew Cutler, PhD
Health Care Consultant, Chemical Engineer
Andrew Cutler is a health care consultant in the Seattle area. He has
a PhD
in chemistry from Princeton, a BS in physics from the University of
California, is a patent agent and a registered professional chemical
engineer. His research has led to a number of publications in
chemistry,
chemical engineering and space-related journals.
He also has engaged in extensive self study in biochemistry and
medicine due
to assorted health problems coalescing into a devastating "mystery
syndrome"
his doctors were not able to cure - or even diagnose - for quite some
time.
After being able to work with his doctor to get better he decided to
expand
his professional activities to include writing about health topics.
Shula Edelkind / The Feingold Program
Mother of a child with AD(H)D
When Shula Edelkind's second child was more than "all boy" and became
an
obvious behavior problem, she didn't have a clue what to do. She
obeyed the
doctors, took parenting courses, put him on Ritalin, then Cylert, and
was
considering adding Tegretol as an effort to control the hallucinations
produced by Cylert, when he developed Tourette Syndrome. In the
1980's,
doctors had not yet seen Tourette Syndrome. It took the Tourette
Syndrome
Association's article in a magazine, and a four-hour trip to a special
diagnostic clinic to get the diagnosis. When she
saw
the Woman to Woman talk show on TV discussing treatments for AD(H)D,
including the dietary treatment of the Feingold Association, she
thought it
might be useful, or at least not harmful. Remarkably, in four days,
her son
was behaviorally normal. By the end of the year, there were no more
Tourette's tics and he has been in "permanent remission" for the past
20
years.
Alan Schwartz, MD (DAN)
Medical Director/Owner of the Holistic Resource Center
Alan Schwartz, M.D. is Medical Director and owner of the Holistic
Resource
Center in Agoura Hills, CA. He received his M.D. degree at S.U.N.Y.
Downstate Medical Center in 1968 and his residency at Children's
Hospital of
the East Bay (Oakland, CA) and at Kaiser Permanente Hospital Medical
Center,
San Francisco, CA. During active duty for the U.S. Army in Japan, he
served
as a pediatrician. After becoming board-certified in pediatrics in
1973, he
continued to practice pediatrics as a civilian at U.S. Army
facilities. In
the 1990's he served as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics for
the
Riverside Medical Clinic, where he practiced after his discharge from
the
Army reserves.
After a 25-year career as a pediatrician supporting US Army
personnel, Dr.
Schwartz made the transition to an integrative (holistic) family
practice
over a two-year period of study from 1999-2001. While at Fort Riley,
KS in
the 1980s, he had been Associate Clinical Professor at the University
of
Kansas Medical School, Wichita, KS. He has since taught many health-
related
courses, such as "Natural Remedies to Improve Immune Function" at
Riverside
Community College in California, and other institutions. He has
produced
many health-related booklets, such as "Natural Remedies for the
Brain" and
"Natural Remedies for Autism". His special interests include:
Nutrition,
preventive medicine, herbal medicine, allergy, AD(H)D, natural
remedies,
autism, hormonal regulation, chelation and IV nutritional therapies.
He is
currently at work on a book called "The Antioxidant Connection".
Manuela Martinez, MD
Founder of the Manuela Martinez Foundation for Children
Manuela Martinez studied Medicine at the University of Barcelona
Medical
School. She specialized in Pediatrics (1964) and in Clinical Chemistry
(1972) at the University of Barcelona, and graduated as a Doctor of
Medicine
at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1977). Her main interest
has
always been the influence of nutrition on brain development in health
and
disease. Initially, she studied the lipid profiles during
myelination, and
then myelin itself. It was her previous work on brain development
that led
Dr. Martinez to discover a new lipid abnormality in the Zellweger
syndrome:
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) deficiency. She then became deeply
involved in
the study of peroxisomal disorders, devising a new treatment (DHA
therapy)
for these severe diseases. She has become increasingly interested in
applying this research to treating autism. In 2002, she created the
Manuela
Martinez Foundation for Children with Metabolic Diseases, mainly
dedicated
to disorders related to lipid metabolism.
