Subject: More Then Words

Andrea McDuffie is on faculty at IU and is involved in the autism program that is being developed.  She is also a speech language pathologist.   She is interested in assessing the level of interest parents may have in participating in the Hanen Method.  Below is a description of the program.  If you are interested, please email me at prattc@... and I will connect you with Andy.   She is interested in doing these sessions in Bloomington only at this point.

More Than Words is a family-centered program designed to provide parents of young children with ASD with a set of practical tools that can be used to enhance children’s communication skills during everyday routines and activities. The program was developed by the Hanen Center in Toronto Canada and is offered to parents by an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist who has completed additional training from the Hanen Center. The More Than Words program is organized around four major goals: improved two-way interaction, more mature and conventional ways of communicating, better communication for social purposes, and improved language understanding. The program consists of an orientation meeting, a pre-program consultation for parent and child, 8 weekly group training sessions for parents (~2.5 hours each),  and three in-home video feedback sessions for parent and child. All sessions and in-home consultations are conducted by the Hanen trained SLP and the entire More Than Words program lasts 13 weeks. The More Than Words program is not designed to replace other interventions for children with ASD but is focused on teaching parents to use empirically based strategies that can facilitate their child’s development of communication skills. Parents receive an illustrated More Than Words guidebook and numerous videotaped teaching examples are presented during each parent training session. For more information about More Than Words, visit the Hanen Center online at www.hanen.org.
