Early Detection Of Autism
Chris

If you have ever had concerns about a child's development, you are not alone. Having occasional concerns is a natural part of parenting and care-giving. But when these concerns persist, it's time to take the next step. Whether you're worried about a child's language, how the child relates to the people in his life, how he plays with toys, or any other developmental concerns, young children rely on those who can help. Early detection of autism is critical to the future of young children who may be at risk for autism spectrum disorders. The M-CHAT questionnaire is a screening tool used to facilitate early detection of autism. Pediatricians and family doctors often use this questionnaire during a child's 18 or 24-month developmental check-up.

April is Autism Awareness Month

Greetings!

Back in 1972, the Autism Society of America (ASA) established April as the National Autism Awareness Month.  During this month, ASA and other organizations focus on raising autism education and awareness.  Special events are being held across the country.  If you are interested in participating, please visit ASA's website.

In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, TeachTown's own Manya Vaupel has written an article about early detection and the M-CHAT.  Also, TeachTown is happy to announce that we will be at the ABA Conference in San Diego, May 25th - 29th.  In addition to our booth, Dr. Whalen will be part of a symposium called "Empirical Validation of Internet-Based Curriculum."  The presentation will be held at 1:30pm on May 27th in the America's Cup AB room.

But that's not all.  TeachTown has two more big announcements in this newsletter.  So, please, read on and enjoy.

TeachTown Awarded Department of Education Grant
Butterfly

TeachTown received its second Department of Education grant. With recent increases in autism prevalence, estimates are now 1 out of 150 births,  "We have a rapidly growing school-age autism population that is severely under-served." says Dr. Whalen, Founder and Chief Science Officer. "Our goal is to provide affordable, available, and effective treatment."

In a 2 year project TeachTown will conduct research studies which will include children with autism or Asperger's Syndrome, parents, and professionals from the autism community. This research will guide the development of a new education and treatment program targeted at grade levels 2nd - 5th. This innovative treatment will build on the success of TeachTown: Basics, which is now helping hundreds of younger children and being adopted by major school districts across the U.S. The new program, like its predecessor, will teach language, cognitive, and social skills and will include computer and off-computer activities in a comprehensive curriculum.

Wings Learning Center

As a program specialist at a school for children with autism spectrum disorder, I enjoyed implementing the TeachTown program for all of our students.  Each student has an account both at school and at home.

Due to the fact that  motivation is so crucial for our students, I help select the right reinfrocement for each student.  It's visual, friendly, and fun to play with.  A lot of students comment on what they see through the program and I use the opportunity to increase thier language and social interactions.  One of the biggest challenges for our students is generalization.  The TeachTown program provides off-computer activities that help generalize concepts that they are learning through the computer activities.  Also, the data collection system is an outstanding feature of the program.  I am able to easily see the students' progress and pinpoint areas of need.  Lastly, it is very important to communicate with the parents. The Teach Town Program allows for parents and teachers to be on the same page as the teachers, ask questions and share ideas. Most of our parents do the program at home with their child and write a comment in each session.

Overall, the TeachTown program is a great tool and I'm very glad that the students get the benefits of the program and enjoy it as well.  They love it!
