Hi,
Due to the late date we are at, this likely will be our last update on our
progress in getting different professions signed up for our Feb teams going to
Honduras.

As you can see in the DRAFT roster below, we have a good supply of some
professions but have a severe problem in others. Take a close look at your
profession and see if and where you can help. Obviously, if things do not
change, some of these teams will cancel.

Please, pass this info on to anyone else who may consider going.  We need to
hear back from anyone interested very soon as we will be doing the team rosters
on 12 November and at that time make decisions on which teams will get
cancelled.

Here are the teams and how many are assigned so far: (Note that support people
are not listed as there are enough of them on nearly all teams except 1 more
translator and 1 more radio person)

Dates of the Feb mission: The last travel day to go to LaCeiba, Honduras to
start the mission is Saturday, 13 Feb. The first day you can travel back home
after the mission is over is Saturday, 27 Feb. Do note that is rare cases we can
have people sign up for one week but that is only when a spot is empty and that
is the only way to fill it.

Note;  In places where we have 1 MD and need another, an NP or PA can fill that
second spot !

Also Note: If you want, you could likely ask for a spot at a location you see a
need for.  We are very open to getting folks where they would like to serve.

Contact me right away if you have an interest or any questions. Otherwise, send
in your application right away plus I suggest an e-mail mentioning you have sent
an application so we can start planning teams.

Thank you so very much for ANY help you can give !!

Note attachement on typical Feb teams

Hi,

I am sending this to several of you as this is an urgent last minute request.
If we do not get another optometrist or skilled eye care person it could mean
our cancelling an eye team.  I was just given the latest list on all those
signed up to go to Honduras in Feb.  We had wanted to have 2 eye teams as we did
last year.  Our BIG problem is we only have one optometrist signed up so far.
Bottom line... if the team cancels, over 500 people will go without glasses and
eye meds.

Is there ANY way that you can go for one or two weeks in Feb?   We could really
use your expertise to continue this critical work !!  Obviously, if we do not
get another optometrist it could mean our cancelling the second eye team.  The
sad part is many support people and our supplies are ready to go to do two
teams.

Also, if there is another optometrist or anyone else with eye care skills that
may be interested, please mention our critical need to them as well right away
!    In a perfect world, we would like 2 optometrists on each team. plus other
skilled support people.

Please let us know one way or the other if you can go.  Several of us are coming
and going in the next week or two so may I suggest you send your reply to
several of us.  Thanks for that.

Thanks so much for considering our important need.

International Health Services News Update

Hi Everyone,

Great news ! The October 2009 and February 2010 IHS medical trips are a go.
Thursday night we had an IHS board meeting and after discussing many topics we
are proceeding with all Honduras medical projects as usual.

One thing we talked about is we are in critical need of optometrists and
other eye care folks!  Applications for the Feb, 2010 mission have started
coming in but so far we have only one optometrist  signed up and we would
like two or three more.  Please consider going AND talking with
other medical and support folks to see if they can go, too.  The Feb, 2010
mission will be very similar to last Feb’s trip.  Note the attached 2009 Team
Map does an excellent job of showing the details of the trip. Note the eye teams
in Puerto Lempira and Marcovia.  We are hoping for an eye surgery team this
time as well.

Other Important Info Items:

If you are planning to go, please get your application in as soon as possible.
Applications are also online (www.ihsofmn. org) and in the NewsBreak, which will
be out soon. The October team is pretty well set to go so I am talking about the
Feb, 2010 mission.

Talk to friends If you know of anyone who may have an interest in going, please
talk with them soon as we always need new people to fill open spots on the
teams. As always, at this time of the year we need people in all medical
professions and support/helper positions. As the map shows, we also take
doctors, nurses, pharmacists, surgery folks, optometrists & eye care folks, plus
many support/helper people.  Many people go with spouses and friends.
Besides staffing our medical teams, we are looking for optometrists & eye care
people as the need for eye care is great in Honduras and we wish to continue to
improve our eye glasses teams and we hope you can help in that.
To save on costs this year, as positions fill we will not be taking extra help
in any positions. A waiting list will be created if needed.

Honduras - Elections for the new Honduran President will be in late November, so
a lot of the news related activities should be over before the Feb. trip.

Official dates for the Feb trip are: 13 Feb – 28 Feb, 2010 - dates (days of
the week) are a little different this year so take a close look at your
calendars. These dates include your travel days at the beginning and end plus
one free day after the mission. If you need to get home right after the medical
mission work is done, you can actually leave on Saturday, 27 Feb but most will
stay a day or two after to enjoy local sights.
From this you will see that if you want a 2 day side trip (Roatan or Utila
Island, Copan Mayan Ruins, Tela, etc) at the end you will have to return home on
Monday, 1 March (or after if you like). There are help sheets available on
travel dates, side trips, airline tickets and related topics… just let me know
& I will pass them on to you.

IHS Fundraiser - October 10, 2009 Every other year our fundraising event is a
dinner with silent and live auctions - always a fun event! This year the
fundraiser will be held Saturday, October 10, 2009 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota at
a great facility. Everyone is encouraged to attend and we are actively looking
for people to serve on the Fundraiser Committee to help us make it a great
event! Watch for further announcements and ticket info. Important…. we are in
need of many silent auction items to help raise funds. We also need a few large
ticket items for our live auction including the use of a vacation cabin/home for
a few days (somewhere nearby preferred) with a flexible use date. Contact Marcia
Ernst: fundraising@ ihsmn.org to sign up for the committee or to find out where
to send your auction items.

Other Support The fundraiser will get us some financial support but it will not
come close to providing the funds needed to handle our annual budget. We are a
totally volunteer group so please consider a donation prior to the end of the
year to help out. It is tax deductible due to our 501©3 status. Also consider
giving a talk/presentation to organizations, churches, etc that you belong to. I
have pictures & presentations I can send you if you need them. Make many copies
and use the attached Team Map to explain all the types of medical work we do and
to show all the needy locations we go to. You can talk about the IHS medical
mission both to help get funds but also to help get new people to go. Obviously,
that would be best if it happened BEFORE October. Do note we do take
applications after October 1st for empty spots on teams.

The bottom line is the Feb. medical mission is a go. Please help in any way you
can to make it a success. We hope to see your smiling face in LaCeiba !

Feel free to contact me or any of the other board members listed below with
questions! That is what we are here for. The main IHS web site is still at

Optometrists and other eye care professionals,

We need your help!  International Health Services (IHS) is presently organizing
a dental & medical group to send to very poor areas of Honduras next February.
IHS has done this for 27 years.  So far this year, we have had a good response
from many doctors, nurses, translators and support people.  However, we are in
critical need of several more optometrists and eye care helpers.  Please
consider going on this important and well organised trip.  We hope to have most
people signed up by the end of September so we can plan teams and start getting
glasses, medical/pharmacy supplies and food ready to ship in our container.

Note the very informative attached files.  They are very informative to the
daily work our clinic teams do.  If you do not get them, write me and I will
send them directly to you.  The team map shows a typical mission with the many
types of teams we send each Feb.  It also shows the professions used on each
team.  I also attached some great articles written by those who went.

PLEASE forward this information on to others who may be interested.  I will be
going again on my 16th trip and my wife Karen will be with me for the 14th time.

Please write or call if you have any interest or need an application.

Are you a dentist, optometrist/eye care professional or a support helper and
are willing to participate with a medical team going to Honduras? If so, we are
in critical need of your help AND it is easier to go than you may think!

We will need at least 4 more dentists and as many optometrist/eye
professionals to go to support this important medical mission trip to very needy
villages in some poor areas of Honduras.  We also need doctors, nurses and
MANY general helpers to complete our teams.  We have made detailed plans to
simultaneously send about 10 medical teams to these sites for our next medical
mission.  At least two of the clinic teams will be for eye care.  If this
seems right for you or you have questions, call me right away or reply directly
to my e-mail address (info below).

This past Feb. mission was a huge success. Check out the latest Newsbreak
newsletters at: www.IHSofMN.org Note the attached team map that shows very well
the types of teams and locations we went to.  In Feb, over 120 people
participated on our teams and the results were great..… literally thousands of
people were helped!

Detailed Info: Right now IHS (International Health Services) is in critical need
of medical folks, Spanish interpreters and other support people to go on a 2
week medical mission trip to Honduras. It is a large undertaking with about 10
teams planned to go at the same time for the 13 Feb to 28 Feb, 2010 trip. That
may seem like quite a ways off but careful planning is essential for a
successful mission. We have started to collect supplies and meds for about 6 or
7 medical/dental clinic teams plus several eyeglasses and surgical teams. This
means about 100 people will go counting all the support and worker people who go
also (many spouses and friends go in this way). We have done this for 28 years
so we have all the logistics planned out. This includes a container shipment to
send supplies, meds, radio gear, and any personal items of yours (if you want)
ahead of time. We are a totally volunteer group but IHS does help cover many of
the expenses in going.

The medical duties will vary some depending on the team location. How many teams
of each type we will have totally depends on how many people sign up and what
their profession is. We do most the sign ups early so that a small group can go
to Honduras the end of October and line up the team locations based on the
skills of the medical folks that have signed up. We get many applications during
the summer, most well before 1 October. So call me ASAP if interested. We have
had a fairly good turn out so far for dentists and most support (engineers,
helpers, & radio) folks. However, I know of only 4 doctors and 3 nurses signed
up so we need more folks with those skills. Our purpose is to go to the poor
remote locations of Honduras where there are no medical or dental services for
the local people. It would be a sad thing if a team did not go to a very needy
village simply because we lacked a medical person to complete a team.

FYI, our typical clinic team in a village will have two docs, an RN and one
other nurse or EMT, one or two pharmacists, a phamacy tech, a dentist
(usually), one or two Spanish interpreters, an engineer, one or two radio
operators, and several helpers.  Eye teams occaisionally do eye surgeries but
most are clinics that do eye exams and give out meds and prescription glasses.
They typically have one or two optometrists plus other eye care
professionals in addition to an interpreter and several support people.  All
are well-rounded teams and this also helps when a spouse or friend wants to be
on the same team (note our application has a place to note your desire to be on
a team with some one else). A parent can take a MATURE son or daughter also if
they are able to be a productive member of the team.

Important info and resources: Medical folks and helpers alike can go to the
website www.MetroDoctors.com to see two articles written by docs who went with
IHS in the past.  On the left side of the Home page, click on Publications and
then select the July/August issue. One article was written by Dr Don Asp and the
other by Dr Ken Hodges. Also, as mentioned before, there are NewsBreak
newsletters and many photos at the IHS website www.IHSofMN.org  There are some
good articles on eye care in the Feb 2008 issue.  Other ones have articles
about dental and other work on teams.

I have a CD plus a lot of other information I can pass on to you if you or
someone you know has an interest in going!  It is packed with photos, daily
journals, NewsBreak articles and a great Power Point presentation that shows our
daily work.  Also, there are several other IHS Directors who can answer more
technical questions about the medical side of things, etc.  So let me know if
you have questions in that regard, as well.  Note that the CD is also good for
those signed up as it has a lot of photos & info about most of the sites we go
to. This includes clinic and radio set up info from the past.

Call me any time or write back. A call is best so I can fill you in on basic
expenses and the variety of work conditions we encounter. I can help you to get
and fill out an easy application. Karen and I have gone over a dozen times so we
know the value of this tremendous experience! We will be going again next Feb.

I and the needy of Honduras thank you for your interest in this very rewarding
work!

Best regards,

John Kirckof

PS – One topic I do want to mention is the politics of Honduras.  Not because
it is a grave issue but because what we are seeing here in the USA is a VERY
sensationalized view of things.  It truly is NOTHING like what we see on
TV..… I have been there for 15 years so I KNOW.  American TV (especially CNN)
had been reporting the news, often via Venezuela news sources so take it from
there.  The vast majority of Honduran people are a quiet and warm people who
peacefully support the new government which will not take away their freedoms
like the past President was trying to do.  I have no issues against going back
again, any time to do our work in the villages.  Karen and I plan to go again
with the next Feb 2010 mission.  Call me if you have concerns in this.

Feb. Honduras medical mission report - A huge success !

 2 June Report

IHS (International Health Services) had another great year of medical mission
work in Honduras!    In February we sent about 120 medical and support people
to 8 team locations.  Most were in very poor villages where there is NO health
care available.  During the 2 weeks of work, we saw over 10,000 patients !  We
also handed out about 1500 prescription and reading glasses plus many pharmacy
items to those in need.  The surgical sites did over 100 needed surgeries.
 Quite an accomplishment.

A large part of the huge succces we had in caring for the desperatley poor was
the huge prepararion work done last summer and fall to recruit the many workers
plus to gather all the needed supplies for each of the team sites. We are now
starting this important prep work again for next February’s medical trip. In
future e-mail reports, we will mention the need for many medical professions
plus quite a few support people (interpreters, engineers, radio operators and
many general helpers). Watch for those e-mail updates.

This year, we ran 6 medical clinics, 6 dental clinics, 3 surgical sites, and 2
eye glasses clinics. The medical clinic teams were in LaEsperanza, Marcovia,
Yocon, Lisangnipura, Uhi, and on the Kruta River. The dental clinics were in
Raya, Uhi, Lisagnipura, LaEsperanza, Marcovia, and on the Kruta River. The
surgical sites were in LaCeiba and Puerto lempira. The eye glasses teams were in
Marcovia and Puerto Lempira.

If you want more info, email me at JMKKEK@Yahoo. com

General Mission Info: For those of you who may not have gone or read any past
information on our medical trip, here are the basics. Each year, during the last
2 weeks of February, IHS will send 10 or more medical, dental, surgical, & eye
glasses teams to Honduras. We will also send ahead 1 or 2 container shipments to
get all the needed medical supplies, team food, and pharmacy supplies there.
Each year, our hope is to have about 7 or 8 medical clinic teams to include a
dentist on each team. We also hope to have 2 or 3 surgery teams and 2 or 3 eye
glasses teams. We try to send several support people (interpreters, engineers,
radio operators, and general helpers) on each team to help us provide quality
care to all we see. Each year we see about 600 to 800 people (average) at EACH
of the 8 or so clinic sites. So, we do touch many lives and most are people who
have NO medical or dental care available to them except our once a year visit.
NOTE that our
biggest need right now (besides medical folks) is Spanish interpreters.

You can see a glimpse of what we do at: www.IHSofMN. org (check out the 2008
NewsBreak newsletter!) We are based in the Minneapolis metro area but
participants are from all over the US and many other countries. There are IHS
Board members and others who you can talk with to learn more.

Give me a call or send me an e-mail if you are interested or want more detailed
info.

The needy of Honduras and I thank you.
