Despite recent news reports, short term interest rates remain
steady. These rates are used to set credit card rates as well as adjustable rate
mortgages.
a.. Prime rate: The rate charged to the most creditworthy
individual or corporate borrower. This rate usually is paid in addition to a
fixed margin (say prime+4.0 percent). As prime varies your rate varies.
a.. Discount: This is the rate which makes headlines as the
Federal Reserve board meets every 14 weeks. It is the rate that the 12 Federal
Reserve banks charge commercial banks to borrow money. The lower the rate, the
more profits banks make in lending money to us unfortunate.
a.. Fed funds: This is the rate each commercial bank charges
each other for overnight loans and funds held at their respective Federal
Reserve district bank. Its British relative is the LIBOR rate has 1-month,
3-month, 6 month and 1-year tiers.
a.. 11th district cost of funds: The 11th district's savings
account rate which is used as benchmark for adjustable rate mortgages
As we weather the Wall Street mess, it is important to keep a
clear understanding of the American economic system. Unfortunately, not
including securities from our oversees neighbors, American securities are almost
completely unprofitable on a point-to-point basis beginning October 9, 2000
onward. We look forward to working with you and please vist
