The purpose of this class is to give the students an advanced awareness of low back anatomy and the use of massage techniques to address issues particular to clients with chronic low back pain. 15% of the adult US population have had persistent back pain at some time in their lives. 5 million Americans are partially disabled by back problems, and 2 million are so severely disabled that they cannot work. Using lecture, illustrations and handouts the instructor will describe some of the more common low back syndromes. The instructor will present detailed information on surface anatomy of the low back; described by structure, actions, and significance. By demonstration and table time, students will be taught several massage techniques used to work with low back pain

This course will cover many kinds of injuries that massage therapists can help: vehicular whiplash; accidents and falls; muscle strains (pulled hamstrings, etc.); tendon tears (rotator cuff problems, bicipital tendinitis, tennis elbow, achilles tendinitis, etc.); ligament sprains (sacroiliac, ankle, wrist, knee, etc.); repetitive strain; microtrauma; plantar fasciitis; shin splints. Symptoms, known causes, typical effects, contraindications, applicable anatomy, and additional treatment supports will be discussed. Suitable ways to apply advanced massage therapy that can assist wound healing and optimize scar tissue will be demonstrated, along with table-side assistance during practice
