Fibromyalgia Jan 26 Sa 9a-4p 6 hrs $99 Fibromyalgia, or fibrositis, as it is sometimes called, is a mysteriously debilitating syndrome that afflicts between 6 and 12 million people in the United States. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain illness characterized by widespread musculoskeletal aches, pain, and stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, general fatigue, and sleep disturbances. A study of people with fibromyalgia done by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine found that those who got 30 minutes of massage two times a week for 5 weeks had less anxiety and depression and lower levels of stress hormones. Over time they reported less pain and stiffness, less fatigue, and less trouble sleeping. Using a combination of lecture, anatomical illustrations, handouts and technique demonstration in a classroom setting, the instructor will present a class that is 3 hours lecture and 3 hours practical application. The instructor will discuss the causes and conditions related to fibromyalgia. Great attention will be paid to the use of light and moderate pressure as studies have shown that too aggressive an approach can exacerbate fibromyalgia symptoms. The teacher will also discuss relaxation therapy, exercise coaching and goal setting for the client. At the end of the class, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the physiological components of fibromyalgia, as well as knowledge of current allopathic and alternative treatment approaches. The student will also have knowledge of low force or non- force massage techniques complimentary to Swedish massage that have been proven beneficial to clients with fibromyalgia. | ||||||
