Hello,
I just subbed to this group. Not sure if I'll be welcomed and, if not, just
say so and I'll unsub.
I market Hawaiian Noni which has been available since 1992, 4 years longer
than the MLM, Morinda. Yet Morinda have the audacity to call us
"imitators." A prime example of that MLM's unfamiliarity with the truth.
I have recently learned that I had personally bought into another of their
lies. They have claimed that Noni is on the GRAS (generally recognized as
safe) list and has been since WWII. I have a distributor (we're not an MLM)
in Slovakia who is anxious to introduce Hawaiian Noni into Hungary.
However, the authorities in Hungary want proof that Noni is safe. Since I
always thought that Noni was on the GRAS list, I used this as proof to the
Slovaks that Noni was recognized by a US government agency as "safe."
In the past I have never been able to find evidence of this claim. Since,
in this instance, I needed absolute proof, I approached the USDA who
referred me to the FDA. After about a dozen e-mails I finally found the
right person. Here's the deal:
Noni is not only NOT on the GRAS list, it is not even relevant to the list.
According to Dr. Lane A. Highbarger, Center For Food Safety and Applied
Nutrition, Office of Food Additive Safety, HFS-206
Division of Biotechnology and GRAS Notice Review, the GRAS list is SOLELY
for products that are food ADDITIVES! Things like food coloring, and all
those other items you find on the ingredients lists of processed food in
the small print.
Now, I don't for a moment think that Noni is unsafe. I've been taking my
own product daily for nearly a decade and my immune system is flameproof.
Noni is simply not officially a "safe" product. And, of course, apples,
oranges, and pears are not "officially" declared safe either.
All the best,
Mike Beebe
