The Amazing Noni Tree

Noni fruits and leaves from the noni tree have been known and
used for centuries by people in Polynesia and Asia. The
scientific name of the noni plant is Morinda Citrifolia. Noni trees
grow to about 25-30 feet high and have a long life span. The
healthiest trees grow in volcanic soil in tropical climates and
spread naturally. The trees continuously bear hundreds of fruits
each year, most dropping to the ground where they decompose
and become a natural fertilizer.

Fruits ripen on the trees and as they do they emit a strong,
disagreeable odor, perhaps as a defense mechanism against
birds. Unlike most other fruits, noni fruit and its juice have a
strong, bitter taste. The natives and others prefer to drink the
juice "straight". For those who wish a more agreeable taste,
simply mix noni with grape or cranberry juice.

The ancient Polynesians discovered that the fruits and leaves of
the plant could be used as their natural health tonic and topical
skin care aid. In fact, noni and a few other tropical plants was
their only "pharmacy" available. There were no doctors,
hospitals or drug stores around. The people had to find their
own health aids and noni was a favorite. Noni juice is a natural
source of vitamin C, polysaccharides, enzymes and other
nutrients and these components helped the natives survive. The
early people of Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands exported noni
plants everywhere in the Pacific region, including Hawaii.

There are dozens of producers of noni these days. Some
questionable juice mixes are reconstituted with water from noni
powder; others are made from noni fruit pulp diluted with water;
others are mixed with other fruit juices, water or added flavors.
Very few noni juices are marketed as 100% pure noni juice.
Many sellers look for ways to dilute noni to maximize profits.

There are a number of key questions a buyer of noni juice
should ask before buying noni:

Is the juice safe to drink?
If the juice has been fermented over a long period of time, it may
contain unwanted alcohol, yeast and microbes and may not be
safe. Fermented noni has a dark brown color. The freshest noni
juice is a light transparent brown. To be safe, noni juice should
be pasteurized.

Has the juice been thoroughly tested for purity and other
ingredients such as polysaccharide enzymes and other
nutrients?
Find out if the supplier has run analytical tests prior to and during

How much real noni juice is in the bottle?
Care should be taken as many labels do not indicate how much
or what percentage of the juice is real noni juice. Some use
deceptive labels such as "100% Guaranteed Noni Juice", or say
100% and add their trademark name. That does not mean that
the juice is 100% noni juice, but rather "100 guaranteed." If the
label says "reconstituted", it means water has been added.

What is the origin of the juice?
If the supplier does not tell the buyer the origin of the juice, it
could mean they are supplying an inferior juice from
questionable sources or a species of the plant that produces
less effective noni juice.

How was the juice processed and where?
If the juice was processed in Polynesia, was it done in a lab or in
a kitchen? Was it made from juice, pulp or powder? Who did
the processing? Was it pasteurized there or was it done later?
How was the juice shipped to the bottlers? Was it pasteurized
just before bottling? Does the bottle contain a batch number and
expiration date? These questions can shed light upon how the
process itself might affect the potency of the juice and its purity.

What will pure noni cost me, especially per ounce?
Some noni juices are sold via multi-level marketing and are
exceptionally expensive, up to $42 per 32 oz. bottle. One
supplier has only 7 ounces of pure noni in their 32 oz. bottle so
the actual amount of pure noni costs nearly $6.00 per ounce! A
wide range of prices is advertised, but few suppliers will reveal
what the cost of their juice is per liquid ounce.

What will noni juice do for me?
Frankly, we don't know, as every human being is different and
there's no way to predict noni's effect upon you. We make no
medical claims of any kind. Those who make wild claims for
cures are deceiving the consumers. There have been no double
blind study tests done by the FDA or anyone else, although
researchers at the University of Hawaii Cancer Research
Institute are presently studying noni's effects upon human
