John Ford - The Searchers

visually dazzling, the Searchers draws legitimate comparison to
Griffith's "Birth of a Nation". both are great films.

In the Searchers, John Ford renders the Commanche raid on a western
farmhouse very suspensefully. Later, a raid by the whites on a
Commanche settlement is rendered as a heroic action. John Ford takes
sides here; it isn't merely the racism of John Wayne's Ethan Edwards
that is on display.

the cast is very strong. i think Vera Miles contributes
significantly as the long-waiting Laurie.

Ward Bond as the Reverand who enjoys shootin Injuns is a stock
character in Ford's canon. The Indians themselves are little more
than moving targets (who inexplicably, repeatedly charge at the more
heavily armed white men).

to Ford's credit, the end tidies things up and cleanses a lot of the
hate we witnessed throughout.
