MSG - Slowly Poisoning the World
 
I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive obesity epidemic, so did a friend of mine, John Erb. He was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo, and spent years working for the government.

He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America. In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies.

No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with a chemical when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats (and humans?) to become obese They even have a title for the race of fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats" .

MSG?

I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and the fridge.

MSG was in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones. The items that didn't have MSG had something called Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate. It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG under many different names in order to fool those who catch on.

But it didn't stop there. When our family went out to eat, we started asking at the restaurants what menu items had MSG. Many employees, even the managers, swore they didn't use MSG. But when we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure enough MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere. Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every restaurant, even the sit down ones like TGIF, Chilis', Applebees and Denny's use MSG in abundance. Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender: MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I loved to eat that coating on the skin, their secret spice was MSG!

So why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or a vitamin?

Not according to my friend John. In the book he wrote, an expose of the food additive industry called The Slow Poisoning of America, (www.spofamerica.com ), he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body.

Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby group supporting MSG at http://www.msgfacts.com/facts/msgfact12.html explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more. A study of elderly people showed that people eat more of the foods that it is added to. The Glutamate Association lobby group says eating more benefits the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us?

'Betcha can't eat just one', takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is concerned!

And we wonder why the nation is overweight? The MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added.

Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance: NICOTINE for FOOD!

Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the prepackaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday.

The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food. They claim it's safe to eat in any amount.

How can they claim it is safe when there are hundreds of scientific studies with titles like these?

Yes, that last study was not a typo, it WAS written in 1978. Both the medical research community and food "manufaturers" have known MSG's side effects for decades!

Many more studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to Diabetes,

Migraines and headaches, Autism, ADHD and even Alzheimer's.

But what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic we now see?

Even as you read this, George W. Bush and his corporate supporters are pushing a Bill through Congress. Called the "Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act" also known as the "Cheeseburger Bill", this sweeping law bans anyone from suing food manufacturers, sellers and distributors. The Bill has already been rushed through the House of Representatives, and is due for the same rubber stamp at Senate level. It is important that Bush and his corporate supporters get it through before the media lets everyone know about MSG, the intentional Nicotine for food.

Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the highest government health officials in Canada. While sitting in the Government office, the official told him "Sure I know how bad MSG is, I wouldn't touch the stuff!" But this top level government official refused to tell the public what he knew.

The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing legal issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry may hurt their profit margin.

So what do we do?

The food producers and restaurants have been addicting us to their products for years, and now we are paying the price for it.

Our children should not be cursed with obesity caused by an addictive food additive.

But what can I do about it? I'm just one voice, what can I do to stop the poisoning of our children, while guys like Bush are insuring financial protection for the industry that is poisoning us.


I for one am doing something about it.

I am sending this email out to everyone I know in an attempt to show you the truth that the corporate owned politicians and media won't tell you.

The best way you can help save yourself and your children from this drug-induced epidemic, is to forward this email to everyone. With any luck, it will circle the globe before Bush can pass the Bill protecting those who poisoned us.

The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if big tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle on Nicotine?

Blow the whistle on MSG.

Hidden Sources Of MSG In Foods

What if someone were to tell you that a chemical (MSG) added to food could cause brain damage in your children, and that this chemical could effect how your children's nervous systems formed during development so that in later years they may have learning or emotional difficulties?

Cancer vaccine kicks up controversy in India

BANGALORE: An advertising blitz launched by a multinational drug firm to promote its high profile but controversial cancer vaccine has left Indian households confused and health workers worried.

The 15-second commercials seen recently on Indian television urge parents to get their young girls inoculated with the vaccine Gardasil to protect against cervical cancer, the second commonest major cancer in women.

What the ad hides, of course, is that the vaccine is mired in a controversy in the United States over its safety and the ethics of administering it to girls as young as nine.

The vaccine manufactured by Merck & Co blocks two strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV 16 and 18) which are known to cause about 70% of cervical cancers.

The US Food and Drugs Administration authorised sale of the vaccine in that country in June 2006. The company launched it in India in October 2008 and followed it with television advertisements that tend to make the parents believe that their daughters risk dying of cervical cancer if not vaccinated.

Advertising prescription drugs on television is unethical enough, but using fear to sell them is worse, according to medical scientists aware of the controversy in the US.

Gardasil is an efficient vaccine but the safety and risk information about it has not been made available to parents to enable them make an informed decision about vaccinating their daughters, says Kumaravel Somasundaram, a cancer expert at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. "We did not debate the issues even within the science community before the vaccine arrived in the market," he said.

Its exorbitant listed price - $120 (Rs 5,800) per dose and three shots are required - is the least of the concerns about the vaccines, says Jacob Puliyel, consultant paediatrician at the St. Stephens Hospital in Delhi. "What bothers me is the reported side effect." A Google search with just two key words 'gardasil+safety' lists 263,000 reports relating to side effects.

As of August 31, the US Centres of Disease Control (CDC) had received more than 10,000 adverse event reports, including 27 deaths following Gardasil vaccination. According to CDC, seizures, blood clots and paralysis accounted for six% of adverse events classified as "serious", while fainting, fever and headaches made up the rest. But the US health officials and Merck have dismissed the adverse events as "unrelated to the vaccine" and have claimed that the vaccine is safe.

Puliyel says the Gardasil vaccination raises an ethical issue as it can only prevent, but not treat HPV infection. Since HPV is sexually transmitted, the vaccine needs to be given before a girl becomes sexually active - ideally at the age of 11. "The underlying assumption here is that adolescent girls in India may all become promiscuous," says Puliyel.

An August 21 editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine noted that Gardasil's "long-term effectiveness is unclear" since no participants have been followed for more than five years while most cervical cancers take 10 years to develop.

"While it has been shown that the HPV vaccines prevent pre-cancerous lesions, we don't know if they will prevent cancer itself," the editorial said.

The journal also raised two other questions: One, most HPV infections clear on their own in 1-2 years through the body's natural immune response. Will the vaccine interfere with this natural process and, if so, in what ways? Two, since only two of the cancer causing strains of HPV are suppressed by Gardasil, will other strains take their place? More than 160 types of HPV are known to exist.

"With so many essential questions still unanswered, there is good reason to be cautious about introducing large-scale vaccination programmes (with Gardasil)," says Charlotte Haug, editor in chief of the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association.

"There is too little long-term safety and efficacy data, especially in young girls," says Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, a public interest group in Washington. "It looks as if an unproven vaccine with dangerous side effects is being pushed as a miracle drug."

Merck spokesperson Vince Docherty however told IANS that the vaccine was tested in approximately 25,000 people in the United States and around the world, "and found to be safe and effective in preventing serious HPV-related diseases".

According to the company, the vaccine launched in India can be given to women from age 10 to 26. The office of the Drug Controller General of India did not reply to questions on how the vaccine was allowed to be sold without the mandatory clinical trial on local population. The trial in the 16-23 age group, originally proposed by the Indian Council of Medical Research in early 2008, has not started for reasons not known.

The Merck spokesperson however said that Indian regulators approved the sale of Gardasil in July 2008 on the basis of "clinical efficacy and safety data" generated worldwide and the results of a clinical trial carried out in India in 2007 in 110 healthy girls in the 9-15 age group. The company had outsourced the trial to unnamed contract research organisations and the results have not been published. The Merck official said the results are "in the process" of being published.

According to the American Cancer Society, virtually all cervical cancers can be prevented if any pre-cancerous cells detected during routine "Pap" test are treated immediately. The Pap test that costs about Rs 200 can detect changes on a woman's cervix even before cancer develops, when it is most curable. Between 1955 and 1992 the number of cervical cancer deaths in the United States dropped by 74% by the use of Pap test alone, without any vaccination.

The American vaccine watchdog, Virginia-based National Vaccine Information Center, has cautioned that Gardasil vaccine could lull people into a false sense of security. It says that since the vaccine protects only against a few strains of HPV responsible for 70% of cervical cancers, "it will be important for women to continue getting screened by regular Pap tests" to guard against the remaining 30% of cervical cancers caused by other dangerous strains of HPV.

Critics say that the Indian health ministry which acted so fast to put the controversial Merck vaccine on chemist shops ahead of the clinical trial (in the 16-23 age group) should have instead promoted the inexpensive Pap test across the nation if it was really serious about reducing cervical cancer deaths.

Lesson to be learnt: If ATBSNR done for a few minutes gave so much relief,
imagine the health benefits if one could make it a habit of repeating the same
as often as one could, to feel fresh and fine each  and every time.

Sugar is a Poor Choice

Sugar - A Poor Choice

Health is a choice. If you choose health, sugar is not an option. Sugar is a dangerous metabolic poison and a leading contributor to our epidemic of chronic disease. If we want to vastly improve health, one single choice we can make is to stop, or at least minimize, sugar consumption. The less you eat and the less frequently you eat it, the better off you will be.

History

Our biologic ancestors did not have access to sugars in the refined forms that exist today. Sugar was a rare commodity, found primarily in fresh fruits, or perhaps a batch of honey. Advents in technology brought forth the first sugar refineries during the Napoleonic period. At that time sugar was expensive, and average consumption was about 7 pounds per year. By the end of the 19th century, sugar was affordable, and available to almost everyone. Since 1909, sugar consumption has increased by 70%. Americans now eat an average of about 150 pounds of sugar per year, up 25 pounds (20%) since 1970! In terms of caloric content, sugar makes up more than 25% of the average American's diet and up to 50% of some children's diets! An empty calorie food with no nutritional value whatsoever, sugar is replacing valuable complex carbohydrates as a source of energy for humans. Historically we did not eat these refined sugars, and doing so throws the body into a chaotic state of disregulation.

Overview

Here's the problem: The human body was simply not designed to handle refined sugars. They bring about a deadly combination of malnutrition and toxicity. Refined sugar is new to the human diet, and people are eating an enormous amount of it—almost half a pound per day! Feeding refined sugar to a human body is similar to burning high-octane aircraft fuel in an automobile engine. Impressive amounts of energy, but after a while, you damage the engine. Metabolizing refined sugar is quite a challenge, but if forced to, the body will struggle to cope with it. This struggle causes serious disturbances, and after time, disease is the guaranteed result. If sugar were introduced today as a new product, the FDA would not approve it. FDA approval requires that a product be safe. Evidence that sugar damages health is overwhelming. It has been associated with diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. In fact, the rise of chronic disease in modern societies has paralleled the rise in sugar consumption. When these facts are examined, one might consider feeding sugar to children a form of child abuse... Instead, we give children sweets as a "reward" for being good!

Nutrient Deficiencies

Food is supposed to support life. Sugar will not support the life of humans, animals, insects, or even bacteria. Sugar really isn't food! Sugar requires specific nutrients in order to metabolize in the body. The refining process strips these nutrients from the source materials like sugar cane, so that metabolism requires the body to deplete itself. The body uses up its reserves, causing deficiencies of various B vitamins, magnesium, chromium, and other nutrients. Here are some examples of clinically significant sugar-related deficiencies:

  • 20 psychotic teenagers, being unsuccessfully treated with psychotherapy and tranquilizers, were completely cured by vitamin B1 supplementation. Sugar had depleted their B vitamin reserves making them deficient and causing abnormal behavior. One can be sure there are tens of thousands of teens out there right now with similar problems.
  • Chromium deficiencies have been linked to both excessive sugar consumption and heart disease. Coronary disease patients average twice the sugar consumption of healthier people, and have significantly less chromium in their tissues.
  • Sugar and vitamin C use the same transport mechanism. Excessive sugar intake overloads this transport system and may cause vitamin C deficiencies.
  • Sugar promotes bone loss and causes osteoporosis.
  • Sugar inhibits the release of omega 6 essential fatty acids from storage in fat tissues, thereby contributing to essential fatty acid deficiency.
Metabolic Chaos: Heart Disease, Hypoglycemia & Immunosuppression

Sugar throws body chemistry into biochemical chaos lasting for six to eight hours after consumption. During this period, hormone, fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism are greatly disrupted. After consumption, refined sugar is rapidly absorbed by the body, which dangerously increases the sugar content of the blood. Excess sugar causes production of excess insulin, which signals cells to take up sugar. Cells then absorb sugar, to get it out of the bloodstream. This solves one problem but creates another: Now the body's cells have too much sugar. To correct this imbalance, cells turn the sugar into saturated fats and cholesterol. This brings us to heart disease.

In terms of heart disease, eating sugar is similar to eating saturated fat, only much worse because sugar creates a lot of other problems. Increased insulin levels not only tell the body to store fat, but they also tell it not to release fat. This makes people get fat and stay fat. It causes fat to be deposited in our cells and organs, resulting in atherosclerosis, fatty liver and kidneys, and obesity. These fats cause blood cells to become sticky thereby increasing the chances of blood clots, strokes and heart attacks. Sugar increases "bad" LDL cholesterol, decreases "good" HDL cholesterol, and increases triglyceride levels in the blood. If antioxidant vitamins and minerals are deficient, these triglycerides can be oxidized causing serious health problems. In addition, red blood cells are choked by the saturated fats and this reduces their ability to carry oxygen to our tissues.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is another problem caused by sugar consumption. When insulin is secreted into the blood, it makes blood sugar levels fall rapidly. Insulin levels remain high however, so the body continues to take up sugar beyond the point where it needs to. The result is hypoglycemia. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, crying spells, insomnia, aggression, and depression. Sugar in breakfasts or lunches can cause children to do poorly in school. They become hypoglycemic about 60 minutes after eating sugar and this affects brain function. Many teachers claim that their students are "brain dead" after lunch, and this is why.

Sugar-induced hormone imbalances tax and weaken the immune system to the point where it can no longer defend the body. When insulin causes blood sugar to fall excessively low, the adrenal glands secret hormones that pump blood sugar back up. Daily consumption of sugar causes an overworked biochemical balancing act resulting in adrenal exhaustion, which in turn decreases the body's ability to respond to future stress. Adrenal exhaustion is now a common problem in the chronically ill. Sugar quadruples adrenaline levels, while increasing both cholesterol and cortisone. Cortisone is known to depress immune function. Studies show that the ability of white cells to destroy harmful bacteria is reduced as sugar consumption rises. This is why children, who eat lots of sugar, are more susceptible to colds, flu, and other infections.

Fiber Deficiency

Humans were designed to derive energy from complex carbohydrates, which are naturally high in fiber. By contrast, a high sugar diet provides calories without the fiber that is essential to human health. Insufficient fiber causes materials to move too slowly through the digestive tract. This can cause constipation, which is a big problem in our society. It also causes waste to remain too long in the colon where it can serve as food for harmful bacteria, thereby producing gas and toxins, and promoting intestinal inflammation and bloating.

  • Fiber has been shown to remove toxic and carcinogenic substances from our bodies.
  • Lack of fiber leads to toxic absorption and excessive stress on the liver.
  • Fiber binds to hormones like estrogen and removes them from the body. Without fiber, the estrogen may be reabsorbed and excess estrogen is known to cause disease.
  • Fiber slows down the rate of sugar entry into the blood stream, so foods like sweet fruits are suitable and healthy alternatives to refined sugar.
  • Fiber has been shown to improve diabetes control because high fiber diets greatly reduce the need for insulin.
Conclusive Research
  • Human volunteers who were fed sugar experienced a rise in cholesterol levels plus a marked increase in blood pressure.
  • Laboratory animals died sooner when sugar was added to their diet.
  • Rats fed a high sugar diet did less physical work, were unable to reproduce as well, and had shortened life spans.
  • Other animal experiments concluded that refined sugar "causes serious disturbances in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism," and caused diabetes in the animals.
  • People who have little contact with refined sugar have virtually no tooth decay.
  • The saturated fats produced by sugar metabolism cause pimples, acne, senility, and heart disease.
  • A high sugar diet increases the severity of premenstrual syndromes in college women.
  • Sugar feeds cancer cells causing them to grow faster and has been linked to colon, kidney, prostate, breast, rectal, ovarian, uterine, and nervous system cancer.

In our society, staying away from refined sugar is no easy task. Sugar is added to most processed foods and many food labels list sugar under more than one name. This can be confusing to the consumer. Look for sugar under names like sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, maltodextrin, raw sugar, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, honey, rice syrup, corn syrup, maple syrup, concentrated fruit juice, and barley malt. Sugar in whole fruits is acceptable, but not so in fruit juices because the lack of fiber allows rapid absorption of the sugar.

Deficiency and toxicity are the two causes of disease, and sugar is a leading contributor to both. This is why sugar is a major cause of our modern epidemic of chronic, degenerative diseases. Read labels carefully and avoid sugar as much as possible. Most especially, don't feed sugar to children. The dangers of eating sugar were even known to the ancient world. In the Bible, Proverbs 25:27 says, "It is not good to eat too much honey." We seem to have forgotten this ancient wisdom.

Extra virgin coconut oil is a miracle oil that, along with its delicious taste and aroma, also aids in fat loss, has premier infection fighting properties and helps support healthy thyroid and cardiovascular function.

Misguided Advice from the Experts
Extra virgin coconut oil is known to be one of the healthiest fats. As a savvy health consumer you have probably heard from the so-called experts of the health community as they consistently warn us to avoid saturated fats, especially tropical oils such as coconut and palm oils.

Consumers have been told that saturated fat consumption is responsible for heart disorders, obesity and many degenerative diseases. These are the health “experts” who for years told us to load up on pasta and refined grains and whose poor advice must now bear some responsibility for our nation’s high rate of obesity and heart disease. These are also the same experts who in the early ’60s warned us not to breast-feed our infants.

Butter, coconut oil and animal fats have nourished human beings for several thousands of years. Yet nowadays these healthy foods have been relegated to the sidelines of culinary custom, replaced by concoctions of very questionable nutritional value. Nearly all commercial foods today avoid saturated fats and instead rely on polyunsaturated or partially hydrogenated vegetable fats. These may be “vegetarian,” “no-cholesterol” foods but they’re not necessarily better for our health.

For the last five decades Americans have increased their consumption of unsaturated and hydrogenated fats and have decreased their consumption of other types of saturated fatty acids including butter. In direct correlation, the rate of heart disease has increased, as has obesity, cancer and many other immune system disorders. There appears to be a clearcut link between our rising consumption of these fats and rising rates of some diseases. It is time to return to healthy fats from coconut oil, as well as flax, salmon and whole butter.

Fortunately, Mary Enig, Ph.D., FACN, CNS, and other independent thinkers and scientists have written very persuasively that the studies done in the 1950s that formed the basis of the “bad” fat hypothesis were flawed. “The original research failed to distinguish between different kinds of fat,” notes Dr. Enig. “This was a fundamental flaw that is now obvious to us today, however, in earlier times, differentiating between types of fats apparently was not thought to be as important. The early research on which our dietary myths are now based, concluded all fat to be bad—saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated.

“We now know that not all fats are equal and that some fats are indeed health promoting, while others truly are damaging to our health. Consumers have been misguided about fats for a long time, especially that soy, corn, canola, safflower, sunflower and cottonseed oils should be their preferred oils. And of course, margarine has been crowned the king of spreads, taking the place of healthy, wholesome organic butter.”

Good Fat vs. Bad Fat
“The tropical oils were very popular in the [United States] food industry prior to World War II,” Dr. Enig notes. “With the war and the shortages of imported tropical oils, an effort was made to promote local oils, like soybean and corn oil.” (Not surprisingly, the U.S. is the world’s largest exporter of soybeans). “Studies were done to show that coconut oil and all saturated fats, were bad for one’s health because they raised serum cholesterol levels. However, these studies were done on hydrogenated coconut oil and all hydrogenated oils produce higher serum cholesterol levels, and contribute to greater oxidation and free radicals in the body, whether they are saturated or not. Recent research has revealed that it is the presence of trans fatty acids that actually cause health problems. These are fatty acid chains that have been altered from their original form in nature by the oil refining process.”

The real culprits in heart disease are more likely to be elevated intakes of human made trans fatty acids from hydrogenated oils, (such as those in corn and soy oil, baked and prepared foods), in addition to the over consumption of carbohydrates, (found in breads, pastas, cereals, pastries and other processed foods). Excess amounts of trans fatty acids (man-made molecules created from hydrogenated vegetable oils) increase the risk of degenerative diseases and other age-related maladies.

Health Benefits of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Extra virgin coconut oil is the healthiest, most versatile, unprocessed dietary oil in the world. It contains medium chain triglycerides (MCTS) that the body metabolizes quickly, converting the fats to energy rather than storing them as fat. Extra virgin coconut oil is a stable, healthy saturated fat that does NOT elevate undesirable (LDL) cholesterol.

Coconut oil has been shown to reduce the symptoms of digestive disorders, support overall immune functions and help prevent bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Rich Source of Antioxidants
Coconut oil is abundant in the full spectrum of antioxidants and helps to reduce the body’s need for vitamin E.

Naturally Occurring Antimicrobial Compounds
Extra virgin coconut oil, rich in lauric acid (50 to 55 percent), capric and caprylic acids, has tremendous antiviral and antifungal properties. In the body, lauric acid converts into monolaurin, a compound that is adept at fighting viral pathogens and is also present in large quantities in breast milk, where it protects infants from viral, bacterial and parasitic infections.

The medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) in coconut oil also have notable antifungal properties important for those with Candida and other fungal related infections. Caprylic acid, a MCFA found in coconut oil, is one of the most potent, natural yeast fighting agents. Capric acid, another MCFA in coconut oil, has a similar beneficial function when it is formed into monocaprin in the human body. Monocaprin has been shown to have significant antiviral effects against microorganisms that cause sexually transmitted diseases.

Protects Against Heart Disease
Bruce Fife, N.D., CNC, in his book The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil (Piccadilly Books, 2001) is quoted as saying, “one of the biggest criticisms about coconut oil is that it’s a saturated fat and causes or contributes in some way to heart disease. However, when you go to the coconut growing regions of the world, you find that those people who eat the most coconut and coconut oil have the lowest rate of heart disease in the world.

“In Sri Lanka, people there eat the equivalent of about 120 coconuts a year. They use coconut oil in all of their cooking and yet their death rate from heart disease is about one out of every thousand. This compares to the United States, where nearly half the population suffers from heart disease and we basically eat no coconut oil at all.

“Another interesting piece of research occurred with the island studies of Pukapuka and Tokelau, located in the South Pacific. Researchers studied the entire population of these islands—they studied the food they ate and their health. They found that up to 60 percent of the islanders’ total calories came from fat and 50 percent from saturated fat, primarily from coconuts. The researchers stated that there was no evidence in these people of heart disease.”

Promotes Healthy Thyroid Function
Coconut oil is shown to enhance thyroid function. This in turn, stimulates the conversion of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol into the antiaging hormones pregnenolone, progesterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). These valuable agents aid in preventing heart disease, senility, obesity and other degenerative diseases.

Unsaturated fats damage the mitochondria by suppressing the reparatory enzyme and by causing generalized oxidative damage. The more unsaturated the oils are the more specifi- cally they suppress tissue response and transport of the thyroid hormone. Coconut oil assists in “activating” the metabolism, helping to prevent the inhibiting effects of unsaturated oils.

Aids in Weight Loss
Another benefit from coconut oil’s unique ability to support thyroid function is healthy weight management. In the 1940s farmers tried coconut oil to fatten their animals but instead discovered that it made them lean and active.

A study conducted in Yucatan, where coconut oil is a staple, showed that metabolic rates of people living there were 25 percent higher than in comparable test subjects living in the United States. Increased metabolic rate is a key to healthy weight management and could account for the leanness of people living in areas where coconut oil is consumed on a daily basis.

People who consistently use coconut oil report changes in their ability to go without eating for several hours without experiencing the affects of hypoglycemia.

Simply explained, most oils from animal and vegetable sources contain long chain fatty acids (LCFAS), whereas extra virgin coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids (MCFAS). This means that the fatty acids in coconut oil are not packaged into lipoproteins and do not circulate in the bloodstream like other fats. Instead they are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy and burned off in the form of calories. In fact, numerous studies have shown that replacing LCFA with MCFA, in both animals and humans, results in a marked decrease in weight gain and a reduction in fat deposition.

Coconut oil yields fewer calories than any other oil and its MCFAS, unlike the LCFAS in vegetable oils, actually speed up the metabolism so one can more efficiently utilize those calories. When you consume coconut oil, not only are MCFAS burned off as calories but some LCFAS are burned off as well. This means you don’t necessarily have to reduce healthy fat intake in order to control body fat.

Improves Symptoms of Digestive Disorders
The cause is still unknown but many doctors believe that chronic digestive disorders are the result of bacterial, fungal, or viral infections. While there is no definitive cure, numerous studies have shown that the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil offer positive health benefits for patients with irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and other digestive disorders.

Extra virgin coconut oil provides energy for healing in these cases, in addition to soothing inflammation in the intestinal tract and helping to combat unhealthy microorganisms that can cause chronic inflammation.

Most coconut oils today are produced using a refining, bleaching and deodorizing process. I am sure many of you must have read the article that appeared in Mind Your Body, Nov 27, entitled, “Vitamins draw more flak.”


The effect of the article is to cast doubts among hundreds of thousands of faithful consumers of vitamin supplements as to the value of what they have been consuming.  It will undoubtedly also adversely affect the business of supplement distributors and retailers.

As usual, the NY Times-based article is heavily biased and intended to help drug companies sell more drugs for cardiovascular diseases and cancer.   There was no effort made to investigate the weaknesses of these studies and cite the many studies that have shown the benefits of these same supplements, when consumed in their natural form and in sufficiently high doses.


Please find below our rebuttal of your article.  Note that the first 2 studies cited both relate to the Physicians’ Health Study II conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the same research center that was involved in the publication of a highly controversial paper that distorted the results of their research.


In the interest of providing Mind Your Body readers with fair, truthful and unbiased information, we have strongly urged the editor of MYB to publish the other side of the story.  Let’s wait and see if they will do this.


Most of the material below is extracted from the responses of the American Association for Health Freedom/Alliance for Natural Health and the Council for Responsible Nutrition to the Physicians’ Health Study II.


Use of Inferior/Synthetic Forms of Vitamins

Vitamin E is not a single substance, but a range of at least eight substances (tocopherols and tocotrienols).3 The different forms of “vitamin E” have distinct biological properties.4,5 The form of vitamin E used in the Sesso et al. study was synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol. This is less effective than the natural forms, and is quite different in biological function and antioxidant activity than the predominant form in the diet6 (as found particularly in vegetable oils); using synthetic vitamin E thus minimises the possibility of finding benefit. Indeed, its use may interfere with the beneficial effects of natural vitamin E by competitively inhibiting or blocking receptor sites for the natural forms.7 The study also ignored the impacts of the all-important four tocotrienol isomers8 found in natural vitamin E.

The other vitamin evaluated in the Physicians’ Health Study II was vitamin C. This form was also synthetic and lacked the common synergists normally associated with good quality vitamin C supplements, namely citrus derived bioflavonoids, which have been associated with a reduction of heart disease risk factors such as blood triglycerides.9

The Beta Carotene used in the study was also synthetic - Lurotin.

Low Dosage

The vitamin E dose in the study (400 IU every other day) is insufficient to act as an antioxidant in humans. This study has no relevance to people taking natural tocopherols or tocotrienol supplements at appropriate doses. In other words, the study does not apply to people who supplement with vitamin E.


A dose of up to 500mg vitamin C would have minimal or no effect in preventing heart disease. The daily dose of vitamin C used by Sesso et al. (500mg) is only half a typical one-gram tablet, of the type popular with supplement users.  Dynamic flow levels of vitamin C, which may prevent heart disease, begin at daily intakes above about 3g per day, taken in divided doses (this is a minimum level - higher doses may be needed, depending on individual physiological requirements). A dose of 500mg will only marginally raise median blood plasma levels above the baseline level of 70 microM/L and thus be ineffective. For those in the study with pre-existing heart disease (754 men in a total population of 14641), the appropriate vitamin C intake is higher still.


Placebo Problems

A fundamental problem of applying randomised controlled trials to the field of nutrition; you cannot apply a true control given that all subjects are exposed to food, if not supplements, and any balanced diet contains substantial amounts of nutrients, many of which interact synergistically. In scientific terms, the occurrence of uncontrolled elements of the diet in both the control and treatment groups introduces confounding that is likely to interfere with any meaningful biological effects, particularly if the dosages are low, as they indeed were in the Physicians’ Health Study II. In addition to this, given that the study involves physicians, it is likely that the subjects, with their greater knowledge of health issues, would have consumed diets that are healthier than those of average Americans.


Fallacy of the Magic Bullet

Perhaps we need to revise our expectations that one single healthy habit [or pill] will serve as a ‘magic bullet’ and allow us to live disease-free-after all, one piece does not complete the whole puzzle, but we certainly don’t discard the piece just because it doesn’t fit in a particular spot. Within the research community and academia, we encourage scientists to engage in additional studies that are designed to answer questions about the effects of nutrients on chronic disease and explore the apparent inconsistencies created by the existing research. Scientists, policymakers, healthcare professionals and consumers alike should continue to question commonly accepted research models, such as: whether the current approach used in RCTs (randomised controlled trials) of studying nutrients in isolation is appropriate; whether observational data are adequate to make policy decisions as is the case with food; and whether we’re studying the appropriate populations or subgroups, with the appropriate dosage and combination of nutrients for the correct length of time are other questions. There are still many more questions to be answered. Science is constantly evolving and by shifting the current paradigm of disease research to a paradigm of nutrition and prevention, we can better aid consumers in living healthier lives.”


The Importance of Synergy and Biochemical Individuality

One explanation is that the effects of nutrients in the human body are complex and influenced by many variables. Understanding the causality of chronic disease is equally complex. RCTs may be inherently limited in their capacity to address the unique challenges presented by nutrients and dietary interventions. Nutrients appear to work best in combination with other nutrients, yet RCTs tend to examine effects of unique chemical molecules in isolation-which is how pharmaceuticals work. Further, in using RCTs to study nutrition questions, there is the challenge of being able to create a true control or placebo group. For example, in contrast to pharmaceuticals, it is both impossible and unethical to ensure participants in the control group are not exposed at any level to vitamins and minerals.


This leads us to the question, ‘what should consumers do?’ The best advice for consumers is to engage in a lifetime of healthy habits-like not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a well-balanced diet and appropriately supplementing with vitamins, regular exercise, and regular visits to a physician. These appear to be best practices. Vitamins play a vital role in promoting overall general health and fulfilling specific nutrition gaps. Despite the results from recent studies, there is additional research that suggests antioxidant vitamins may play a role in helping to lower the risk of chronic diseases. However, vitamin supplements are just one piece of the puzzle, which may be why we didn’t see the results we anticipated from the recent clinical trials.


Vested Interests

With three drug companies supplying the vitamins for the trial, namely BASF Corporation, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and DSM Nutritional Products (formerly Roche Vitamins), maybe this was a surer way of protecting the drug companies’ core competence, which is clearly in the field of patented pharmaceuticals, rather than in unpatented synthetic vitamin products?   Even the researchers are known to have financial links with the pharmaceutical companies (see annexure).


Conclusion

Sesso and colleagues conclude that the results of their trial “provide no support for the use of these supplements in the prevention of cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and older men.” A more accurate conclusion might have been: the trial provides no evidence that supplementation of low doses of synthetic vitamin C and E, when taken by over 50-year-old physicians over a relatively short period of 10 years, has the capacity to prevent cardiovascular disease. However, as the study authors themselves concede, the initiation of supplementation may have been too late to significantly affect the aetiology of heart disease.


We have argued also that the low doses, inappropriate synthetic forms and absence of other natural nutrients and synergists in combination, would-quite predictably-not have the ability to prevent heart disease. Sesso et al’s trial was therefore a trial doomed to fail!

Nutrients do not “cure” disease in the traditional drug model of suppressing a symptom using a medication or an isolated synthetic active ingredient. Each individual has a unique need for nutrients, and they work synergistically, not by using a single nutrient as a magic bullet. Additionally, lifestyle is always the key factor in the prevention of chronic disease. Diet, exercise, and stress reduction must be included along with dietary supplements. The choice of just vitamin C and vitamin E, ignoring the omega-3 essential fatty acids or other nutrients that have profound heart-function benefits-like potassium, magnesium, coenzyme Q10, d-ribose, l-carnitine, nattokinase, vitamin D, vitamin K2, and aged garlic-seems simplistic and destined to produce a negative outcome. If the doctors continued to eat the processed American diet, remained inactive, continued to be stressed, and perhaps drank too much or ate too much bad fat or too many sweets, why would 500 mg. of vitamin C and 400 IU of vitamin E prevent heart disease or even cancer?


The form of the nutrient in the supplement is now known to be a key factor. As the Wall Street Journal noted in 1996, we may be taking the wrong form of vitamin E. Natural vitamin E, which contains many members of the tocopherol and tocotrienol family, has proven heart benefits. There is much published research, including that done at the Kenneth Jordan Heart Institute, which demonstrates that tocotrienol supplementation reverses plaque within six months. Why would the Harvard researchers use synthetic vitamin E and not a mixed tocopherol vitamin E with tocotrienols?


A presentation on PHSII at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting on November 16 offered similar findings: the daily use of 500 mg. of vitamin C and 400 IU of a synthetic isolate form of vitamin E had no impact on the risk of any type of cancer. However, nutrients like vitamin D, d-indole methane, the glucans from mushrooms, the mixed carotenoids, resveratrol from red grapes and wine, and phytochemcials from pomegranates (just to name a few) have considerable research to back up their use as cancer-fighters-as do other lifestyle changes like exercise.


Millions of Americans lose their lives to heart disease and cancer [the situation is no different in Singapore]; millions (if not billions) of dollars are spent in research with failed methodology. PHSII is a prime example of research money that has been badly wasted. The empowering news is that genes can be turned off and turned on preventing even heart disease and cancer. We need to keep hammering home the message of biochemical individuality using the proper forms of nutrients, the message that nutrients are adjuncts to wise lifestyle choices that include diet, exercise, and stress management.

The MYB article also mentioned that a trial on the use of Vitamin E and Selenium for the prevention of prostate cancer (the SELECT trial) was recently halted due to concerns that these supplements may be doing more harm than good.  What the article failed to highlight is that the National Cancer Institute themselves stated that there was no conclusive evidence that these supplements caused or aggravated prostate cancer and the results were probably due to chance.  Further, the article failed to investigate the form of selenium that was used - selenomethionine which had already been shown to be inferior to high-selenium yeast in its effect on prostate health.


And when will these researchers ever come to the realization that antioxidants like beta carotene, Vitamin C, E, selenium, zinc and CoQ10 work best as a team?  Without all the team players at adequate levels, they just don’t work effectively.

Natural beta-carotene, found in food, is made of two molecules-all trans beta-carotene and 9-cis beta-carotene.


Researchers originally saw no meaningful difference between natural and synthetic beta-carotene. This view was questioned when the link between beta-carotene-containing foods (all natural) and lung cancer prevention2 was not duplicated in studies using synthetic pills.3 In smokers, synthetic beta-carotene has apparently caused an increased risk of lung cancer4 5 6 and disease of the blood vessels7 in double-blind research. Animal research has begun to identify the ways in which synthetic beta-carotene might cause damage to lungs, particularly when animals are exposed to cigarette smoke.8


Much of natural beta-carotene is in the all trans molecule form-the same as synthetic beta-carotene. Moreover, much of the 9-cis molecule found only in natural beta-carotene is converted to the synthetic molecule before it reaches the bloodstream.9 Also, absorption of 9-cis beta-carotene appears to be poor,10 though some researchers question this finding.11

Despite the overlap between natural and synthetic forms, natural beta-carotene may possibly have activity that is distinct from the synthetic form. For example, studies in both animals12 and humans13 have shown that the natural form has antioxidant activity that the synthetic form lacks. Also, in one trial, pre-cancerous changes in people reverted to normal tissue with natural beta-carotene supplements, but not with synthetic supplements.14

Increasingly, doctors are recommending that people supplement only with natural beta-carotene.


NATURAL VITAMIN E DRAMATICALLY REDUCES HEART DISEASE

A new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cardiovascular study evaluating natural vitamin E, synthetic vitamin C, and synthetic beta-carotene shows that natural vitamin E significantly reduced heart disease and is a wonderful dietary supplement for any person concerned about their heart and cardiovascular health. The primary end point of the study was to determine the prevention of either cardiovascular death or serious cardiovascular disease. Natural vitamin E showed an impressive and statistically significant 13% reduction. Natural vitamin E also showed improvement in secondary end points of the study, including a 22% reduction in heart attacks, a 27% reduction in strokes (31% when combined with vitamin C), and a 9% reduction in cardiovascular death. These results for natural vitamin E are nothing short of astounding as they used the gold standard of human testing!


In an absolutely unbelievable reporting of their own study information the authors erroneously concluded “There were no overall effects of ascorbic acid, vitamin E, or beta carotene on cardiovascular events among women at high risk for cardiovascular disease.” This is a flat out lie based on their own study data that they report in the American Medical Association’s Archives of Internal Medicine. They concocted this false and misleading conclusion by including the people who said they were supposed to be taking vitamin E but really didn’t take the vitamin E in the final statistical analysis. The study participants who actually took the natural vitamin E had the dramatic benefits listed in the first paragraph, which the authors failed to report in the study abstract. Instead, the authors fed a false and negatively slanted view of the study to the media, none of whom bothered to check the actual study. The media then proceeded to spread a false negative view of truly remarkable findings on vitamin E and heart health.


Taking a Closer Look at the Study Results

The following two paragraphs are what the study actually says about vitamin E. The first paragraph says that vitamin E did not do much of anything, which is what the authors reported. The second paragraph says that when they re-evaluated the Vitamin E data by removing people from the vitamin E group who failed to actually take the vitamin E, the results were extremely good. This is the important information about what natural vitamin E actually did. The authors didn’t tell the media about this and the media didn’t bother looking into the study.


Vitamin E

No differences were seen in the primary end point by randomized vitamin E assignment (RR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.85-1.04 [P=.23]) (Table 2 and Figure 2), with no significant variation in the relative risk over time. We found a nonsignificant 16% reduction in total stroke, with a 21% reduction in ischemic stroke (P=.06) and an increase in hemorrhagic stroke based on small numbers. There was an overall 10% reduction in the combination of MI, stroke, and CVD death, with a nonsignificant decrease (P=.08) in benefit over time. No difference in total mortality by vitamin E group was found.


Censoring participants on noncompliance led to a significant 13% reduction in the primary end point (RR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.76-0.99 [P=.04]). Reductions in secondary study end points were also stronger, with a 22% reduction in MI (RR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.58-1.06 [P=.11]), a 27% reduction in stroke (RR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.54-0.98 [P=.04]), and a 9% reduction in CVD mortality (RR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.66-1.25 [P=.55]). There was a 23% reduction in the combination of MI, stroke, or CVD death (RR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.64-0.92 [P=.005]). Among those with prior CVD, the active vitamin E group experienced fewer major CVD events (RR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.79-1.00 [P=.04]; P value for interaction, .07) (Table 3).

In order for a result to be statistically significant the P value must be less than .05. In this case the primary end point of the study, the 27% reduction in stroke, the 23% reduction in the combination of MI (heart attack), stroke, or CVD death, and the fewer major CVD events in those with a history of CVD were all statistically significant. These are the impressive results of the people who actually took the natural vitamin E.


Vitamin E has Been Wrongly Attacked Before

As I have pointed out in my previous writing, Vitamin E has been viciously and fraudulently attacked by powerful vested interests, especially researchers funded primarily by Big Pharma. This has nothing to do with real science, and everything to do with a media-backed Big Pharma PR machine trying to convince Americans to take toxic and health-deteriorating drugs instead of safe and effective vitamins. It is likely the study authors, researchers of the heavily Big Pharma-backed Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, were pressured into writing findings that negated vitamin E. Or else the study authors were totally biased and could not believe the spectacular vitamin E results.


In the current study the natural form of vitamin E used was d alpha tocopherol acetate at the dose of 600 IU every other day. Even this form of vitamin E could have been improved upon by using a full mixture of tocopherols or the truly superior tocotrienols. However, at least it was a high quality form of natural vitamin E that was used, unlike studies that used synthetic vitamin E and produced questionable outcomes. Consumers should always avoid synthetic vitamin E, which has an “l” after the “d”, so it looks like “dl alpha” on the label instead of “d alpha.”


Synthetic Beta Carotene did not Help the Heart - No Surprise

I would also like to point out that the synthetic beta carotene used in the study (Lurotin from the BASF, 50 mg every other day) is the same worthless compound found to increase lung cancer in smokers. This pathetic “vitamin” is produced by a German drug company that is actively participating to have vitamins regulated worldwide as well as to promote synthetic vitamins as no different than natural. Since the end of the 1930s BASF has been pouring millions of tons of coal tar-derived food coloring into our food supply, poisoning our citizens - with the blessings of the Big Pharma-owned FDA. The Germans like to synthesize vitamins from chemical sources, as their own country is so poor in natural resources that they can’t make anything from a real food source and thus can’t make a profit selling vitamins unless they are concocted from chemicals. Synthetic beta carotene is made by extracting benzene rings from acetylene gas, and then attaching the benzene rings together to form 100% all-trans-beta-carotene. There is no food source that contains 100% all-trans-beta-carotene.


One example of high quality natural beta carotene is the sea algae Dunaliella salinas, which contains a mixture of 9-cis-beta carotene as well as trans-beta-carotene along with related nutrients such as alpha-carotene, cryptoxanthin, and zeaxanthin. Natural source beta carotene contains a powerful complex of nutrients not present in synthetic beta carotene. Research shows that 9-cis-beta carotene transports much more efficiently in the body. My advice is to avoid synthetic beta carotene which can always be identified because the natural source of the beta carotene is not listed on the label.


Consumer Action is Needed

It is a shame that health-related politics, financial pressures, or researcher bias prevent the publishing of the true meaning of an important study, especially when the findings would cause millions of consumers to abandon dangerous drugs in favor of natural vitamin E. It is a shame that the media has been conditioned like Pavlovian dogs to spread Big Pharma sponsored anti-vitamin bad news as if it is the truth. It is also a shame that important studies fail to use the high quality forms of nutrients, proving only that synthetic garbage does not work. A combination of antioxidants from natural sources is primary dietary support for the reduction of heart disease and cancer, as well as naturally boosting the immune system - the science in this regard is overwhelmingly positive.

Unraveling the lies about the antioxidant study on vitamins E and C

A new study published in the August 13, 2007 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine found that vitamins E and C, when taken together, result in a significant reduction in the risk of strokes (31 percent) and heart attacks (22 percent). The study followed 8,171 women who were instructed to take relatively small amounts of these vitamins for more than nine years (600 IU of vitamin E, 500mg of vitamin C and 50mg of beta carotene were taken every other day — a very small dose according to most modern nutritionists).

Despite these encouraging findings about the positive impact of antioxidants on health, nearly all the headlines in the mainstream media today are proclaiming vitamins E and C to be useless. In classic doublespeak, one press release blares, “Vitamin C and Other Antioxidant Vitamins Provide No Protection from Cardiovascular Events.” This particular distortion comes from the drug-touting Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. BWH goes on to state, “researchers… have found that there is no evidence of benefit or risk from vitamins C, E or beta-carotene on cardiovascular events for women at a high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).”

Other medical associations and pharmaceutical-affiliated groups are making similar pronouncements. Vitamins C and E, according to them, are nutritionally worthless. And they’re basing that conclusion on a study that actually showed the vitamins to be far better at preventing cardiovascular disease than any prescription drug!

How to lie with statistics

So how can anyone claim these vitamins are worthless when the study clearly shows a strong, significant health benefit in those who take the vitamins? It’s simple: the results of the study can be made to look poor by counting the results of all the people who didn’t take the vitamins!

Let me explain this again to make sure I’m communicating this properly: Overall, if you look at the entire group of women followed in this study, you find that cardiovascular protective benefits were only marginal: An 11 percent reduction in the risk of combined cardiovascular disease. But that benefit is diluted by the fact that it includes all the women who neglected to actually take the vitamins! If you include only the women who complied with taking the vitamins on a regular basis, the results increase substantially and become quite significant with a 31 percent reduction in the risk of stroke and 22 percent reduction of risk in heart attacks. In other words, those women who actually took vitamins E and C experienced substantial benefits from doing so. Those who neglected to take the vitamins, not surprisingly, had little or no benefit.

Pushers of pharmaceuticals, of course, want to make vitamins look bad. So they quote the results that include people who never even took the vitamins. “See?” they say. “The benefits aren’t there.” Of course they aren’t! It’s like taking a room full of a hundred hungry children, handing fifty of them a large sandwich, then declaring that sandwiches don’t work as food because half the room is still hungry.

That these figures would even be quoted as something resembling “scientific medicine” is laughable. The defenders of pharmaceuticals have become so desperate to discredit antioxidants and nutrition in general that they have now resorted to quoting study results from people who didn’t even take the vitamins! I’m not sure if this strategy is brilliant or idiotic: It’s brilliant because the mainstream media swallows the story hook, line and sinker (journalists aren’t very skeptical anymore…). It’s idiotic because it’s based on a logic gap so large you could drive a circus convoy through it. If you’re going to test the effectiveness of something, it only makes sense that you have to exclude the results of those people who didn’t take it.

Notice that with drug studies, researchers routinely exclude those who did not comply with taking the drug. They don’t test a drug on 1000 people, but count the results on 2000 people, half of which never took the drug. They only track results based on those who actually took the drugs. It’s common sense.

Desperate to discredit vitamins

But when profits are at stake, and there’s an industry-wide propaganda campaign to push onto the public, common sense gets thrown out the window. Scientific scrutiny turns to wishy washy statistical foolery disguised as authoritative proclamations about nutrition. This, in turn, quickly devolves into nutritional nonsense. The message from industry is very clear: Don’t take vitamins! And if they have to lie with statistics by making a positive study look negative, they’re more than willing to step up to the plate and state the indefensible, almost as if they lived in some alternate universe where the laws of logic have all been reversed.

In fact, the message from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital is quite clear. As JoAnn Manson, MD, chief of Preventive Medicine at BWH and principal investigator of WACS said (with my translation in brackets), “This research underscores the importance of focusing on proven methods for preventing cardiovascular disease, including physical activity, healthy diet, controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol [i.e. using pharmaceuticals], maintaining healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco.”

In other words, she’s saying:

  • Antioxidants are “unproven.”
  • Cardiovascular disease can only be prevented, in part, by using pharmaceuticals.
  • We should stop spending time on nutritional supplements.

(In modern medical lingo, any statement about “controlling high blood pressure” or “controlling high cholesterol” or even “controlling blood sugar” actually means taking pharmaceuticals to control those numbers. So when researchers say that people need to “control their high blood pressure” what they’re really saying is that people should take high blood pressure drugs.)

It’s a message that might as well have been announced from the Big Pharma Glee Club, or the FDA cheerleading squad.

Pushing the pro-Pharma propaganda

Sadly, the mainstream media will buy this distortion, reprint it, and thereby spread disinformation to the public which is already half scared of vitamins thanks to all the other fear tactics being pushed by today’s oppressive medical system. But let’s get down to reality here for a moment, shall we? Drugs have no natural place in the human body, period. There is no disease caused by a deficiency of pharmaceuticals, and most of the drugs being marketed today are pushed under the most ridiculous advertising claims and distorted medical “science.” Properly-prescribed, FDA-approved drugs are right now the 3rd leading cause of death in America, and even those individuals who aren’t killed by the drugs suffer rapidly declining health when taking them. (Have you ever seen anyone take prescription drugs for a few months and get so healthy that they stopped needing the drugs? Of course not.)

Nutrition, on the other hand, is 100% biocompatible with the human body, and nutrition produces exceptional results in restoring and supporting human health. Nobody has ever been killed by antioxidants, or superfoods, or vitamins E and C. Not a single person. Billions of people have been helped by these substances, and nutrition, in fact, is the answer to our health care problems. If we taught people the truth about nutrition, they wouldn’t need prescription drugs! That’s precisely why nutrition must be attacked, by the way: Vitamins threaten the profits of drug companies because vitamins and dietary supplements actually work to prevent disease and keep people healthy!

Anyone who thinks drugs are the answer — and that antioxidants are useless — is probably suffering from the cognitive impairment side effects of drugs they’re on right now. You’d have to be truly out of your mind to think that plant-based nutrition has no role in human health and that only pharmaceuticals can prevent disease.

Yet this remains the dominant mindset in conventional medicine today. It is a mindset based on deliberate falsehoods, scientific distortion and outright lies. And right now, you’re witnessing yet another attempt to disinform the public about the promise of antioxidants.

Personally, I take antioxidants every day. I also eat raw foods, drink superfood smoothies and avoid all prescription drugs. And I have yet to meet any person on pharmaceuticals who even compares to the level of health that I (and many others like me) experience on a daily basis. You show me somebody taking twelve prescription drugs, and I’ll show you someone with a toxic liver, impaired brain function, stressed kidneys and unhealthy blood. Drugs don’t make people healthy. And most drugs, by the way, actually deplete the body of essential nutrients.

Remember: The first thing that goes when you take pharmaceuticals is your mind, and with that you lose your ability to think clearly. That’s when the drug companies, hospitals, FDA and everybody else depending on the current drug marketing racket steps in and tries to convince you to stop taking nutritional supplements and surrender to a (short) life of pharmaceuticals.

Pushing drugs and abandoning the people

For the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I think this action we’re seeing today is yet another example of how organizations that once accomplished meaningful work have apparently sold their souls to Big Pharma and now operate as little more than drug company front groups. Gee, I wonder where their funding comes from?

To show you just one tiny example of how closely tied Brigham and Women’s Hospital is to the financial influence of drug companies, consider the bio of one senior investigator working at the hospital: Christopher P. Cannon, M.D., F.A.C.C. According to this author disclosure, Christopher has received all the following research grants (all of which are greater than $10,000 each, with the actual amounts not disclosed):

Merck/Schering Plough Partnership, Significant (>= $10,000)
AstraZeneca , Significant (>= $10,000)
Glaxo Smith Kline, Significant (>= $10,000)
Sanofi-aventis/Bristol-Myers Squibb Partnership, Significant (>= $10,000)
Schering Plough, Significant (>= $10,000)
Merck, Significant (>= $10,000)

… and all that is from just one person. Do you really think a hospital staffed by doctors receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from drug companies is going to acknowledge that cardiovascular disease can be prevented without drugs by simply taking low-cost antioxidant vitamins?

Of course not. And that’s why their press release about the antioxidant study is, in my opinion, a fantastic example of outrageous intellectual dishonesty in medicine today. These people are so intoxicated by drug money influence that they calculate statistics like drunken sailors and practice medicine like quacks. We would all do well to flee from their dishonest proclamations and get back to the basics of preventing disease with nutrition, not treating it with high-profit synthetic chemicals.

And if they have to lie with statistics by making a positive study look negative, they’re more than willing to step up to the plate and state the indefensible, almost as if they lived in some alternate universe where the laws of logic have all been reversed.

In fact, the message from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital is quite clear. As JoAnn Manson, MD, chief of Preventive Medicine at BWH and principal investigator of WACS said (with my translation in brackets), “This research underscores the importance of focusing on proven methods for preventing cardiovascular disease, including physical activity, healthy diet, controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol [i.e. using pharmaceuticals], maintaining healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco.”

In other words, she’s saying:

  • Antioxidants are “unproven.”
  • Cardiovascular disease can only be prevented, in part, by using pharmaceuticals.
  • We should stop spending time on nutritional supplements.

(In modern medical lingo, any statement about “controlling high blood pressure” or “controlling high cholesterol” or even “controlling blood sugar” actually means taking pharmaceuticals to control those numbers. So when researchers say that people need to “control their high blood pressure” what they’re really saying is that people should take high blood pressure drugs.)

It’s a message that might as well have been announced from the Big Pharma Glee Club, or the FDA cheerleading squad.

Pushing the pro-Pharma propaganda

Sadly, the mainstream media will buy this distortion, reprint it, and thereby spread disinformation to the public which is already half scared of vitamins thanks to all the other fear tactics being pushed by today’s oppressive medical system. But let’s get down to reality here for a moment, shall we? Drugs have no natural place in the human body, period. There is no disease caused by a deficiency of pharmaceuticals, and most of the drugs being marketed today are pushed under the most ridiculous advertising claims and distorted medical “science.” Properly-prescribed, FDA-approved drugs are right now the 3rd leading cause of death in America, and even those individuals who aren’t killed by the drugs suffer rapidly declining health when taking them. (Have you ever seen anyone take prescription drugs for a few months and get so healthy that they stopped needing the drugs? Of course not.)

Nutrition, on the other hand, is 100% biocompatible with the human body, and nutrition produces exceptional results in restoring and supporting human health. Nobody has ever been killed by antioxidants, or superfoods, or vitamins E and C. Not a single person. Billions of people have been helped by these substances, and nutrition, in fact, is the answer to our health care problems. If we taught people the truth about nutrition, they wouldn’t need prescription drugs! That’s precisely why nutrition must be attacked, by the way: Vitamins threaten the profits of drug companies because vitamins and dietary supplements actually work to prevent disease and keep people healthy!

Anyone who thinks drugs are the answer — and that antioxidants are useless — is probably suffering from the cognitive impairment side effects of drugs they’re on right now. You’d have to be truly out of your mind to think that plant-based nutrition has no role in human health and that only pharmaceuticals can prevent disease.

Yet this remains the dominant mindset in conventional medicine today. It is a mindset based on deliberate falsehoods, scientific distortion and outright lies. And right now, you’re witnessing yet another attempt to disinform the public about the promise of antioxidants.

Personally, I take antioxidants every day. I also eat raw foods, drink superfood smoothies and avoid all prescription drugs. And I have yet to meet any person on pharmaceuticals who even compares to the level of health that I (and many others like me) experience on a daily basis. You show me somebody taking twelve prescription drugs, and I’ll show you someone with a toxic liver, impaired brain function, stressed kidneys and unhealthy blood. Drugs don’t make people healthy. And most drugs, by the way, actually deplete the body of essential nutrients.

Remember: The first thing that goes when you take pharmaceuticals is your mind, and with that you lose your ability to think clearly. That’s when the drug companies, hospitals, FDA and everybody else depending on the current drug marketing racket steps in and tries to convince you to stop taking nutritional supplements and surrender to a (short) life of pharmaceuticals.

Pushing drugs and abandoning the people

For the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I think this action we’re seeing today is yet another example of how organizations that once accomplished meaningful work have apparently sold their souls to Big Pharma and now operate as little more than drug company front groups. Gee, I wonder where their funding comes from?

To show you just one tiny example of how closely tied Brigham and Women’s Hospital is to the financial influence of drug companies, consider the bio of one senior investigator working at the hospital: Christopher P. Cannon, M.D., F.A.C.C. According to this author disclosure, Christopher has received all the following research grants (all of which are greater than $10,000 each, with the actual amounts not disclosed):

Merck/Schering Plough Partnership, Significant (>= $10,000)
AstraZeneca , Significant (>= $10,000)
Glaxo Smith Kline, Significant (>= $10,000)
Sanofi-aventis/Bristol-Myers Squibb Partnership, Significant (>= $10,000)
Schering Plough, Significant (>= $10,000)
Merck, Significant (>= $10,000)

… and all that is from just one person. Do you really think a hospital staffed by doctors receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from drug companies is going to acknowledge that cardiovascular disease can be prevented without drugs by simply taking low-cost antioxidant vitamins?

Of course not. And that’s why their press release about the antioxidant study is, in my opinion, a fantastic example of outrageous intellectual dishonesty in medicine today. These people are so intoxicated by drug money influence that they calculate statistics like drunken sailors and practice medicine like quacks. We would all do well to flee from their dishonest proclamations and get back to the basics of preventing disease with nutrition, not treating it with high-profit synthetic chemicals.

Important Cod Liver Oil Update

vitamin D, cod liver, cod liver oil, CLO, sunshine, sunlight, vitamin AFor years, I have recommended cod liver oil as a dietary supplement to support healthy vitamin D levels. However, based on more recent findings, I am updating my recommendations regarding cod liver oil, as it may not serve you as well as previously believed.

My previous recommendation was based on the fact that cod liver oil contains vitamins D and A in addition to healthy omega-3 fats. These vitamins are essential for most everyone who cannot get regular sun exposure year-round.

But more recent research has discovered that the ratios of these two vitamins may be of paramount importance in order to extract optimal health benefits, and unfortunately, modern cod liver oil does not supply these vitamins in healthy ratios to each other.

What You Need to Know About Vitamins A and D in Cod Liver Oil

At least 2,000 genes, or nearly 10% of your genes, have been identified that are directly influenced by vitamin D, which in turn impact a wide variety of health issues, from preventing the common cold and flu to inhibiting at least 16 different types of cancer. There’s even evidence linking vitamin D to the process of brain detoxification of heavy metals such as mercury.

Widespread vitamin D deficiency has also been strongly linked to the childhood epidemics of autism, asthma, and diabetes, both type 1 and 2.

Vitamin A, which is essential for your immune system just like vitamin D, is also a precursor to active hormones that regulate the expression of your genes, and they work in tandem.

For example, there is evidence that without vitamin D, vitamin A can be ineffective or even toxic. But if you’re deficient in vitamin A, vitamin D cannot function properly either.

There are many problems with modern cod liver oil but one of the primary ones is that there is no standard definition of what constitutes cod liver oil. Manufacturers are free to add or subtract as much vitamin A or D as they see fit. In fact cod liver oil was discovered in the sewers of England several hundred years ago by starving children who drank it and scientists noticed they did not get rickets. Cod liver oil is in fact a highly processed food that was never consumed by humans prior to this.

Primary Justification Why You Should AVOID Cod Liver Oil

There have been two recent meta-analyses done. The first one showed that people who took vitamin A supplements in cod liver oil, or in supplements, had an 18 percent increase in death rates. The other study showed that unlike third world countries where vitamin A supplementation appears to decrease infections, vitamin A supplementation in developed countries like the U.S. actually increases infections.

The researchers believe this is due to massive nutritional deficiencies in the third world because most of their calories are from grains and they simply don’t have an opportunity to consume as many fresh fruits, vegetables, butter, eggs and other vitamin A containing foods that those in the developed world do.

In fact current research could not find any vitamin A deficiency at all, but approximately 5% had vitamin A toxicity. The converse is true in the third world where vitamin A toxicity is virtually unheard of, yet vitamin A deficiency is pervasive.

Additionally new research has shown that vitamin D protects against cancer. But a paradox was found as those with higher vitamin D levels did not seem to have this benefit. A bright Harvard researcher carefully analyzed the data in the study that showed this and found that when he removed the people with high vitamin A and vitamin D levels, those with normal vitamin A levels and high vitamin D levels continued to have reduced risk of colon cancer. So those that did not take vitamin A had the protective effect from higher levels of vitamin D.

Other research is now showing a connection between high levels of vitamin A and osteoporosis. In fact many Scandinavian countries that regularly supplement with cod liver oil have rampant osteoporosis even though they are getting adequate amounts of oral vitamin D.

Dr. John Cannell, head of the Vitamin D Council, along with 15 other researchers, recently released an article “Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A Toxicity, Frequent Respiratory Infections, and the Vitamin D Deficiency Epidemic" in the November issue of Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology. In this paper Dr. Cannell raised questions about the efficacy of cod liver oil due to its highly variable and frequently excessive amount of vitamin A. Typically modern cod liver oil contains far less vitamin D than it used to, due to the deodorization process used today which removes much of this essential nutrient.

Dr. Cannell and other prominent researchers believe the vitamin A contained in most cod liver oil is excessive, and can reduce the effectiveness of vitamin D by inhibiting the binding of its active form to your DNA, effectively preventing its ability to regulate the expression of your vitamin D-responsive genes.


The Weston Price Foundation, of which I am an advisory member, holds a contradictory view. They believe vitamin D can only effectively target genes when its “partner receptor” is activated by vitamin A. If vitamin A is absent, certain molecules called co-repressors bind to the receptors and prevent vitamin D from functioning. It is their position that cod liver oil is still a highly recommended supplement.


After reviewing the evidence, I am personally convinced that there is sufficient vitamin A in the current American diet to facilitate sufficient vitamin D activation. This does not appear to be the case in third world countries, where cod liver oil, or some other preformed retinol supplement, would still be useful.

Most Cod Liver Oils Have Excessive Vitamin A (Preformed Retinol)

However, even the Weston Price Foundation acknowledges that there are dangerous versions of cod liver oil out there, even from some highly reputable companies like Nordic Naturals, which produces a  cod liver oil that is clearly excessive in vitamin A as it only has 3 to 60 units of vitamin D per tablespoon but between 150 and 12,000 times as much vitamin A.

It’s a delicate balance.

Both vitamins are essential to obtain optimal health benefits, however, the ratios can become dangerously unbalanced -- much like the omega-3/omega-6 balance, which has become inversed in our modern diet.


Nearly all brands of cod liver oil provide a token amount of vitamin D, typically a mere 400 to 1,200 IU of vitamin D per tablespoon but anywhere between 4,000 to 30,000 IU of vitamin A. This is clearly inappropriate. About the lowest ratio I have seen is ten times as much vitamin A as vitamin D but, as I stated above, it can be as high as 12,000 times as much vitamin A.


First of all, this is clearly an insufficient amount of vitamin D for even the smallest child. This is in part due to the government recommendations, which are FAR too low to offer any health benefits; the recommended daily dosage being no more than 200 to 600 IU, depending on age. Meanwhile, researchers have since established that the therapeutic dosage is anywhere between 2,000 to 10,000 IU per day, depending on your weight and other factors, such as skin color and level of regular sun exposure. (Some people may require, and can safely take, as much as 20,000 IU daily.)


Consuming such high amounts of vitamin A as contained in cod liver oil and most multi-vitamins, while not getting nearly enough vitamin D, combined with the fact that most people are deficient in vitamin D to begin with, could potentially cause vitamin A to become toxic.


The concern Dr. Cannell and the other researchers have is that vitamin A in cod liver oil is excessive and actually antagonizes vitamin D by inhibiting the binding of its active form to DNA and thus preventing its ability to regulate the expression of vitamin D-responsive genes.


The Weston Price Foundation’s strong belief is that vitamin A is not at all toxic but is necessary for optimal vitamin D function. However they believe there is sufficient vitamin A in the diet of most Americans, especially if they are taking a multivitamin. In the third world this is not the case and they would likely benefit from vitamin A supplementation.

The Weston Price Foundation does not agree with Dr. Cannell’s conclusion that cod liver oil itself may cause vitamin A toxicity, however they also do not recommend taking any cod liver oil that is low in vitamin D. Yet even their recommendations, in my opinion have far too low amounts of vitamin D to be clinically useful. But more importantly it appears that the high amounts of vitamin A may limit the effectiveness of vitamin D even if more is taken in addition to that received in the cod liver oil.


Although it’s still unclear exactly what the balance should be, Dr. Cannell and most of the prominent expert researchers in this area believe that the ratios of these two essential nutrients likely should be reversed from those typically seen in cod liver oil, as you need far greater amounts of vitamin D as opposed to vitamin A.


After carefully reviewing the arguments on both sides of the issue I am convinced that Dr. Cannell’s approach is far more likely to be consistent with producing high levels of health and decreased illness.


My Revised Cod Liver Oil Recommendations


As the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (which would benefit from cod liver oil) in the U. S. is much lower than the prevalence of subclinical vitamin A toxicity, while most everyone suffers from vitamin D deficiency, I no longer recommend taking cod liver oil for either adults or children.


You’re likely getting the vitamin A you need if you regularly consume fresh vegetables high in this nutrient, such as sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, and other colorful fruits and vegetables, and butter especially, if obtained from grass fed cows.


Although you can obtain Vitamin D from your diet, it is very difficult, and I believe it is very unnatural. It is my strong belief that we were designed to obtain virtually all of our vitamin D from exposing appropriate areas of our skin to sunshine. If this is not possible, the next best choice would be exposure to UVB rays from safe tanning beds, and if that is not possible then one should resort to a high quality vitamin D3 supplement.


As it stands, it is my strong belief that you’re simply not getting the appropriate balance of vitamin A to vitamin D from cod liver oil, which is why I believe it is best to avoid it.


Please note that this new recommendation does NOT apply to either fish oil or krill oil, as neither of them contain the vitamins A or D, but rather are excellent sources of essential omega-3 fats. EVERYONE still needs a regular high quality source of these absolutely essential and vital nutrients.


Another potential point of confusion is that beta carotene is not a concern, as that is PRE vitamin A. Your body will simply not over convert beta carotene to excessive levels of vitamin A. So taking beta carotene supplements is not going to interfere with vitamin D.

During the preschool years, kids go from toddlers who often throw tantrums to kids who are more willing to cooperate and want to please their parents. They also want to do things themselves, but are willing to learn from mom and dad. This give-and-take creates opportunities for parents to teach kids about healthy food choices in new and exciting ways.

A balanced diet gives kids the nutrients necessary for optimal growth and development, and the energy for the exploration. Through eating right and playing a lot, preschoolers can maintain a healthy weight and stay energized as they get ready for the next big step in their young lives: kindergarten.

The Parent's Role

Guiding a child's eating habits is delicate work. You want to encourage kids to make good choices, but without hovering or pestering. Take charge by presenting mostly healthy foods, but don't teach that certain foods are "bad." You want your preschooler to eat enough nutritious food, but you don't want to start negotiating the number of bites of dinner that must be eaten to get dessert. These approaches usually don't work, and may make it more likely that a child will end up eating less healthy food and more calories.

At a parent's request, a preschooler may be willing to try new foods — especially if mom and dad are eating the same thing. There's nothing wrong with serving foods you know your child likes, but they shouldn't always be on the menu. Serve a variety of foods and don't cater to a child's limited palate. Don't fall into the trap of fixing a meal specifically for your child that is different from your own — before you know it, you will be fixing two dinners every night.

It may seem illogical but it's better to present a range of foods, even if your child sometimes refuses to eat anything on the plate. It's normal to want your child to eat at dinner, but it's also important to know that skipping one meal will not harm healthy kids. Let the child know food will be available at the next regular meal or snack time.

To encourage a well-rounded diet:

  • Continue offering a variety of foods, even ones the child has rejected in the past.
  • Keep healthy foods in the house and limit the availability of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods.
  • Involve kids in meal preparation — for example, let them tear lettuce for a salad or help set the table.
  • Create a structure for daily meals and snacks, so kids don't graze all day long.
  • Have regular family meals and make them pleasant times for the whole family to get together.
  • Set a good example by eating a nutritious diet yourself.

Letting Kids Have Some Control

Parents may feel uneasy about giving preschoolers control over how much they eat. But it's a limited kind of control. The parent is responsible for setting the schedule for meals and snacks and deciding which foods to serve. A child of 4 shouldn't be getting his or her own snacks but can be given a choice and allowed to decide whether to eat or not.

Preschoolers are old enough to begin understanding the concept of being full, known as satiety. Kids who stop eating when they feel satisfied are less likely to become overweight. Most kids naturally know if they're hungry or full and can use these cues to properly control their food intake. Kids who are encouraged to ignore these cues may learn to override this internal control mechanism.

If your child chooses not to eat at a scheduled meal or snack time, try to avoid arguing about it or being critical. Staying neutral and calm will prevent the bigger problems that can arise when parents and kids battle over food.

Cookware, How to Test the Quality of Stainless Steel

Stainless needs to be of the highest quality. Less expensive stainless,
which contains cadmium and nickel as alloys, can leach into the water.

Two Testing Methods

1. Baking soda test can be done on your stainless steel cookware to
check its quality. Boil some water in the pot or pan with one tablespoon of
baking soda in it. After boiling it, taste the water. If it tastes metallic
the stainless steel isn't of a high quality.

2. Magnet Test: According to Dr. Ray Peat, a biochemist, there are two
kinds of stainless steel -- one kind is attracted to magnets, the other kind
is not. You want to buy only the magnetically- attractive type of stainless
steel, which apparently has very low nickel content and does not leach nickel
into food. Nickel is likely more toxic than mercury and the main reason for
concern with stainless steel cookware. If the pan is magnetic, it is 18/0...if
not, it is 18/8 (or 18/10). The addition of nickel neutralizes the natural
ferrous properties of the iron in the stainless steel.

Kidney Disease and Therapeutic Nutrition

Kidney diseases kill 60,000 Americans a year and afflict at least 8 million
more. Dialysis and transplants are expensive, costing taxpayers over 2
billion dollars annually. To that, add the emotional and physical costs in pain.

How Do Your Kidneys Work?
The answer is, constantly! 24 hours a day, your two kidneys filter your
blood somewhat like an aquarium filter filters the water in a fish tank. The
functional unit of the kidney is the NEPHRON, a tissue unit that not only
filters, but also recycles and excretes. The nephron filters blood (except red
blood cells and protein); maintains the body's acid-base ion balance; recycles
needed substances (water, minerals); and excretes wastes in a concentrated
urine. In a manner of speaking, urine is filter ed blood, or more exactly, blood
is filtered urine.

Kidney Diseases and Problems:
Inflammation and Infection
The role of massive doses of vitamin C is profound in this case, providing
prevention and treatment at saturation levels. Since vitamin C is filtered and
"wasted" through the kidneys, its is a virtually custom-made therapy.
Degeneration (resulting from inflammation, etc.)

A chronic excess of dietary protein almost certainly taxes the kidneys and
leads to gradual degeneration. (Williams, SR Nutrition and Diet Therapy, page
856, "The Aging Western Kidney"). Vegetarianism is a virtually automatic
solution to our nation-wide pattern of protein abuse. Protein restriction is
generally considered to be an important treatment for progressed
glomerulonephritis. Reducing protein intake is obviously an ideal way to PREVENT a
protein-breakdown induced nitrogenous overload in the first place.
Increasing carbohydrates is recommended. “Carbohydrates should be given
liberally. This will also reduce the catabolism of proteins and prevent ...
ketosis." (Williams) Again, a regular vegetarian diet, which is high in complex
carbohydrates, will assure just this.

Nephrotic Syndrome (swelling and protein in the urine)
This condition results from tissue damage and impaired nephron function. Its
association with collagen diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc.) is
hardly accidental, for chronic deficiencies of vita min C (and vitamin C’s
helpers, the bioflavinoids) cause the very event described by Williams on page
851: "The primary degenerative lesion is in the capillary basement membrane of
the glomerulus which permits the escape of large amounts of protein into the
filtrate." This is because capillaries, those tiniest and most numerous of
all the blood vessels, get leaky in the absence of ample vitamin C.
Easily-bleeding gums are a visible example of this, but easily-leaking glomeruli (part
of the nephron) are a greater, hidden, but similar problem.

Acute Renal (Kidney) Failure
Early successful management of infectious disease greatly reduces the
likelihood of renal failure. Saturation with vitamin C is very effective,
broad-spectrum treatment for infectious diseases (Klenner, Stone, Pauling. Cathcart).
Vitamin C does not cause kidney problems; it prevents them. For example,
vitamin C stops the formation or oxalate stones, and actually dissolves
phosphate and struvite kidney stones (see below). If kidney failure is suspected, see
your doctor early in the game, and insist that vitamin C therapy is
employed. Even conventional food-groups nutrition texts (correctly) mention the
need for supplemental vitamin C and the B-complex for kidney tissue healing.
Just up the doses if you want best results.

In early renal failure, no protein should be given. Vegetable juice fasting
may work well here. If liquids are res tricted, put the vegetables through
a blender and eat as a salad puree. It tastes better than it sounds.

HOW TO MAKE A BLENDED SALAD according to Dr. Christopher Gian-Cursio, who
was a New York City-based, circut-riding naturopath for over 50 years. I met
Dr. Gian-Cursio some twenty years ago. Here’s his recipe:
1 each small tomato, red or green pepper
1/2 small cucumber
juice of 1/2 lemon or lime
5-6 leaves romaine lettuce
3-4 stalks fresh fennel or celery
Place cut up pieces of tomato, pepper and cucumber along with lemon juice
into blender. Blend until smooth and liquid. Add romaine leaves one at a time.
Add celery or fennel; blend additional 2-3 minutes. (The consistency depends
upon personal taste; some like it smooth and watery, others thick and
crunchy.)
I will add that you should eat your blended immediately. Fresh, wholesome
food does not “keep,” and crushed raw food does not keep at all.

Chronic Renal Failure
Continued deterioration means loss of vital kidney participation in the
activation of vitamin D-1. The result can be osteodystrophy (loss of calcium
from bone or poor bone formation in childhood). Supplementation with vitamin D
and calcium are therefore required.

Amino acid supplements have shown promise in treating chronic renal failure,
when coupled with a greatly curtailed amount of dietary protein of only 20
to 25g/day . As an advocate of vegetable juice fasting, I personally think the
protein restriction may have done as much as the amino acid supplementation.
Why? Because typical hospital “protein restricted diets” provide 40g/day
of protein!

Consider this: the typical American eats over 100g, and frequently exceeds
120g of protein daily, which is WAY too much. So a so-called “restriction” to
40 g/day is simply a correction. Most of the world’s peoples would be
pleased as punch to be able to eat 40g/day of protein. But we happily chow down
three times that , call it normal… and then line up for dialysis.

Dialysis
The cost of too much meat may ultimately be over $10,000 per year for
dialysis at home... or more than $35,000 per year at a dialysis center. And these
are 1990 prices.

During dialysis, the water soluble vitamins (B-complex and C) are lost from
the blood. Supplementation is ESSENTIAL and must be both high-potency and
FREQUENT.

Obstruction: Renal Calculi (stones)
There are five types of kidney stones:
1. Calcium phosphate stones are common and easily dissolve in urine
acidified by Vitamin C.
2. Calcium oxalate stones are also common but they do not dissolve in acid
urine.
3. Magnesium ammonium phosphate (struvite stones) are much less common,
often appearing after an infection. They dissolve in vitamin C acidified
urine.
4. Uric acid stones result from a problem metabolizing purines (the chemical
base of adenine, xanthine, theobromine [in chocolate] and uric acid).
They may form in a condition such as gout.
5. Cystine stones result from a hereditary inability to reabsorb cystine.
Most children's stones are this type, and these are rare.
The Role of Vitamin C in Preventing and Dissolving Kidney Stones:
The very common calcium phosphate stone can only exist in a urinary tract
that is not acidic. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C's most common form) acidifies the
urine, thereby dissolving phosphate stones and preventing their formation.
Acidic urine will also dissolve magnesium ammonium phosphate stones, which
would otherwise require surgical removal. These are the same struvite stones
associated with urinary tract infections. Both the infection and the stone
are easily cured with vitamin C in large doses. BOTH are virtually 100%
preventable with daily consumption of much-greater- than-RDA amounts of ascorbic
acid. Think grams, not milligrams! A gorilla gets about 4,000 mg of vitamin
C a day in its natural diet. The US RDA for humans is only 60 mg. Someone
is wrong, and I don't think it's the gorillas.

The common calcium oxalate stone can form in an acidic urine whether one
takes vitamin C or not. However, if a person gets adequate quantities of
B-complex vitamins and magnesium, this type of stone does no t form. Any common
B-complex supplement twice daily, plus about 400 milligrams of magnesium, is
usually adequate.

Ascorbate (the active ion in vitamin C) does increase the body's production
of oxalate. Yet, in practice, vitamin C does not increase oxalate stone
formation. Drs. Emanuel Cheraskin, Marshall Ringsdorf, Jr. and Emily Sisley
explain in The Vitamin C Connection (1983) that acidic urine or slightly acidic
urine reduces the UNION of calcium and oxalate, reducing the possibility of
stones. "Vitamin C in the urine tends to bind calcium and decrease its free
form. This means less chance of calcium's separating out as calcium oxalate
(stones)." (page 213) Also, the diuretic effect of vitamin C reduces the static
conditions necessary for stone formation in general. Fast moving rivers
deposit little silt.

Furthermore, you can avoid excessive oxalates by not eating (much) rhubarb,
spinach, or chocolate. If a doctor thinks that a person is especially prone
to forming oxalate stones, that person should read the suggestions below
before abandoning the benefits of vitamin C.

Ways for ANYONE to reduce the risk of kidney stones:
1. Maximize fluid intake. Especially drink fruit and vegetable juices.
Orange, grape and carrot juices are high in citrates which inhibit both a
build up of uric acid and also stop calcium salts from forming. (Carper, J.
"Orange Juice May Prevent Kidney Stones," Lancaster Intelligencer- Journal, Jan
5, 1994)
2. Control urine pH: acidic urine helps prevent urinary tract infections,
dissolves both phosphate and struvite stones, and will not cause oxalate
stones.
3. Eat your veggies: studies have shown that dietary oxalate is generally
not a significant factor in stone formation. I would go easy on rhubarb
and spinach, however.
4. Most kidney stones are compounds of calcium and most Americans are
calcium deficient. Instead of lowering calcium intake, reduce excess dietary
phosphorous by avoiding carbonated soft drinks, especially colas. Soft
drinks contain excessive quantities of phosphorous as phosphoric acid. This is
the same acid that has been used by dentists to etch tooth enamel before
applying sealant.
Remember that Americans get only about 500 mg of dietary calcium daily, and
the RDA is 800 to 1200 mg/day. Any nutritionist, doctor or text suggesting
calcium reduction is in serious error.
5. Take a magnesium supplement of AT LEAST the US RDA of 300-350 mg/day
(more may be desirable in order to maintain an ideal 1:2 balance of magnesium
to calcium)
6. Be certain to take a good B-complex vitamin supplement daily, which
contains pyridoxine (Vitamin B-6). B-6 deficiency produces kidney stones in
experimental animals. Remember:
* B-6 deficiency is very common in humans
* B-1 (thiamine) deficiency also is associated with stones (Hagler and
Herman, "Oxa late Metabolism, II" American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 26:8,
882-889, August, 1973)
7. Additionally, low calcium may itself CAUSE calcium stones (L. H. Smith,
et al, "Medical Evaluation of Urolithiasis" Urological Clinics of North
America 1:2, 241-260, June 1974)
8. For uric acid/purine stones (gout), STOP EATING MEAT! Nutrition tables
and textbooks indicate meats as the major dietary purine source.
Naturopathic treatment adds juice fasts and eating sour cherries. Increased Vitamin
C consumption helps by improving the urinary excretion of uric acid.
(Cheraskin, et al, 1983). Use buffered ascorbate "C".
9. Persons with cystine stones (only 1% of all kidney stones) should follow
a low methionine diet and use buffered C.
10. Kidney stones are associated with high sugar intake, so eat less (or
no) added sugar (J. A. Thom, et al "The Influence of Refined Carbohydrate on
Urinary Calcium Excretion," British Journal of Urology, 50:7, 459-464,
December, 1978)
11. Infections can cause conditions that favor stone formation, such as
overly concentrated urine (from fever sweating, vomiting or diarrhea).
Practice good preventive health care, and it will pay you back with interest.

The majority of us will gladly "nuke" our meals on a regular basis. But it may be time to end our love affair with the microwave.

Cooking on the run
Throughout its 40-year history as a commercial product, the microwave oven has been steeped in controversy. Indeed, the "slow food" movement is in part a response to the microwave oven and everything it stands for: fast-paced lifestyle, eating on the run, the lack of interest in healthy foods and in the meal itself as an "occasion". The first household microwave, the Amana Radarange, was introduced in 1967 and the debate over its health effects has raged since.

Why food tastes different
Traditional sources of cooking use waves of infrared frequency to heat food. This form of cooking heats the food from the outside in, and treats the food gently -- more or less shaking the molecules until the desired "done" state is reached.

Microwaves are different. Its frequencies can only heat certain molecules, water being one of them. All food molecules (including water) have a positive and negative end in the same way a magnet has a north and south polarity. The microwave radiation scrambles the positive and negative, flipping them back and forth millions of times in the space of a few seconds. This rapid switching makes the food molecules speed up and all this agitation creates friction, heating the food from the inside out.

But such high, rapid scrambling damages the actual food molecules, tearing them apart or deforming them, changing the taste and texture in sometimes unpleasant ways.

Soviet research
Russia was one of the few countries that did not embrace the microwave oven. In fact after doing their own research on the biological effects, Russia outlawed microwaves in 1976 and issued an international warning. Their concerns centred around the decrease in nutritional B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, essential minerals, lipotrophics, and nucleoproteins. But they also looked at chemical alterations within the food that converted amino acids found in milk and cereal into carcinogens and found a link between microwave use and an increase in stomach and intestinal cancers. The ban lifted after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990.


Swiss research
In 1989, the Swiss food scientist Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel found that eating microwaved food, over time, causes a decrease in blood haemoglobin, a decrease in HDL (good) cholesterol, and a decrease in white blood cell count. The implications are that prolonged eating of microwaved food can cause anemia, heart disease, a compromised immune system, degenerative diseases and cancer. Hertel was promptly convicted of interfering with commerce and the report was suppressed by a powerful trade group until 1998, when the European Court of Human Rights lifted the gag order.

Spanish research
A study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture in 2003 by researchers from the Spanish scientific research council CEBAS-CSIC found that cooking by microwave lowers the nutritional value of vegetables. According to Dr. Cristina Garcia-Viguera, co-author of the study, microwaved broccoli loses 97 percent, 74 percent and 87 percent of the three major cancer-protecting antioxidant compounds (flavonoids, sinapics and caffeoyl-quinic derivatives). By comparison, steamed broccoli loses 11 percent, 0 percent and 8 percent of the very same antioxidants.

This contradicted the FDA statement that “foods cooked in a microwave oven may keep more of their vitamins and minerals, because microwave ovens can cook more quickly and without adding water”.

American research
Since then the FDA has revised its stance on microwaves and released several warnings about microwaves and food. The most recent is about PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) being served up to unwitting consumers via bags of microwave popcorn. Radiation leaks aside from damaged door seals are also a concern along with uneven cooking creating cold spots in which bacteria can thrive.

You should also avoid heating plastics in the microwave or using plastic wrap as this can cause the chemical BPA to leak into your food. Ceramic or glass dishes are safer. [

My dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to bring to your notice the dangers of virtually unchecked approval of genetically modified crops in the country that is largely serving the interest of multinational companies such as Monsanto.   This approval is granted, according to the present procedure, by a Committee of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) followed by a Committee (Genetic Engineering Approval Committee) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

There is a public interest petition pending in the Supreme Court (filed by Aruna Rodrigues) asking for a moratorium of a few years on the sale of genetically modified (GM) seeds and approval of GM crops.   In pursuance of this case, the Supreme Court has nominated me to attend the meetings of the GEAC, which has made me acutely aware of our failings in the area.

I have provided to the GEAC a list of tests that must be done before a GM crop is approved.   However, only less than 10 percent of these tests are actually being done before approval of GM crops.   Not only that, in the absence of a national facility to do these tests or verify the results of tests done by others, the seed companies  are either doing the tests themselves or having them done by laboratories in the country *on samples provided by the seed companies*.     These laboratories do not have a facility to determine whether a seed is a normal seed or  a GM seed.     Therefore, for all practical purposes, there is no objective way today to ensure safety of a GM crop before it is approved for field trials or commercialization.  We already have incontrovertible evidence that a great deal of damage has been done by Bt. cotton (the only GM crop released so far, with many others, including food crops, in the pipeline) to a section of farmers in India,  as well as to farm animals.

Mrs Aruna Rodrigues told me that she had forwarded the list of tests mentioned above, that I had recommended to the GEAC,  to randomly selected well-known scientists who are experts in the field,  for their opinion, along with a copy of the counter-affidavit of the GEAC which said that these tests are not necessary (and which also cast personal aspersions on me!).    She has forwarded to me replies from the ten scientists who were approached by her.   All of them, without exception, have unequivocally supported my list of tests; none of them are my personal friends.  I am enclosing copies of the replies of three scientists who are connected with three of the best-known institutions in the world.    I would be happy to send your office all the other replies  as well.

I, therefore,  agree with the contention of Mrs Aruna Rodrigues in the above mentioned petition that  is pending in the Supreme Court, that we should have a five to seven year's  moratorium on the sale of GM seeds and the planting of any GM crop in the country.    During this period, we should set up an appropriate laboratory to carry out all the necessary tests and to verify the results of others that may have been carried out.   I have given to the GEAC a blue-print of such a laboratory which would easily  take five years to be fully operational.  We seek your support to the above proposal.

May I in the end say that as India is primarily an agricultural country,  with 60 percent of its  population deriving its total income from agriculture and agriculture-related activities, it would cease to be a free country if its agriculture is brought under the control of foreign
multinational companies through control of seed and agrochemical production.

The marketing of GM seeds by the multinational companies is a step in this direction.    What is worrying is that as much as 30 percent of our seed production today may be, directly or indirectly, already in the hands of foreign multinational companies.   We must prevent this trend.  The proposed moratorium would be one important step in that direction.

This partly reverses the agency's October assessment that it was safe to consume food and beverages with melamine levels below 2.5 parts per million, with the exception of infant formula. The FDA said at the time that it couldn't determine if there was a safe level of melamine and melamine-related compounds in infant formula.

I received much of the information below in an email from a reader in the U.K. There’s no telling where it originated (if the creator notifies me, I will gladly credit him or her for it), but I believe the information is valuable enough to share with everyone as it offers some practical guidance, and answers many common questions about this new health threat.

Question: What is Melamine?

Answer: It is an industrial chemical used in the production of melawares – a nearly indestructible, hard plastic. It’s also used in other household items like laminates and fertilizers.



Question: Why is Melamine added to milk powder?


Answer: The most important nutrient in milk is protein. Melamine mimics this protein, so adding inexpensive melamine into the milk reduces the actual milk content required while still making the product appear to have the correct level of nutrients.

In a nutshell: it saves manufacturers lots of money.

It does not have any taste or smell, so cannot be detected without proper testing for the chemical.



Question: When was it discovered that it had been added to milk products?

Answer: In 2007, melamine contaminated material labeled as wheat gluten and rice protein was shipped from Chinese manufacturers to pet food companies in the U.S. and elsewhere. Thousands of pets died from renal failure as a result.

Early in 2008, Chinese hospitals reported an abnormal increase in infant cases of kidney stones.

In August 2008, China Sanlu Milk Powder was tested and found to contain melamine.

In September 2008, the New Zealand government asked China to investigate the problem, and by September 21, it was discovered that many food products in Taiwan also tested positive for melamine.



Question: What happens when melamine is ingested?

Answer: The melamine can form into insoluble melamine cyanurate crystals in your renal tubules, kidneys, ureter, urethra or urinary bladder.

The following symptoms have been observed in infants affected by infant formula laced with high amounts of melamine:

  • Unexplained fever arising from urinary tract infections
  • Unexplained crying in infants, especially when urinating, possible vomiting
  • Small amounts of blood in the urine
  • Acute obstructive renal failure
  • Pain on urinating, and passage of stones while urinating
  • High blood pressure
  • Edema
  • Pain over the kidneys



Although surgery can remove the stones, it can still cause irreversible kidney damage.
The melamine stones can lead to the loss of kidney function, which may require kidney dialysis. It can also lead to death due to kidney failure.

Question: Why is melamine much more dangerous for infants?

Answer: A child’s kidneys are much smaller than those of an adult, and they consume much larger quantities of milk powder (if fed infant formula).

Answer: Foods originating from China that contain dairy products should be avoided.

Introduction

I first realized that my son Willy and I had stumbled on to a huge discovery for
all humanity from our taking “the entire nutrient range in supplement form,
and in an adequately balanced fashion, all at once” in June 2006.

Since this time I have seen Willy’s baggie help some persons to get better
from whatever “pseudo-psychiatric illness” or “pseudo-mental illness”
they may currently suffer from. This help was noticeable by the person taking
Willy’s baggie. Sometimes this help was quite substantial. (All of these
persons suffered from one or more of five “pseudo-psychiatric illnesses”.
These “pseudo-psychiatric illnesses” are commonly known as bipolar disorder,
unipolar depression, ADHD, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia.)

In using phrases such as “pseudo-psychiatric illness” or “pseudo-mental
illness” in this material, my intent is to show complete disagreement with the
current medical model for such illnesses. These are NOT incurable illnesses
involving only the brain, as we have been led to believe by modern medicine.

The truth is that ALL psychiatric (mental) illnesses are “whole body
illnesses”. When the brain is chemically impaired, every other organ and cell
in the body is chemically impaired as well. (This is only common sense.
Unfortunately common sense is often in short supply in the modern medical
realm.)

I also disagree with the commonly held belief of modern medicine that “mental
illness requires medication in which to treat it properly”. This is a big lie.
It is a lie being foisted on the general public primarily for the sake of the
money. (Billions of dollars are being made from prescribing “medication for
life to millions”.)

The use of medication to treat mental illness completely misses the point as far
as “cure” goes. Medication is only “a symptom masking effort”
(“mask” means “hide” or “suppress”). Despite whatever symptoms a
medication may mask, medication never really cures “mental illness”. (This
is one reason why many psychiatric medications are prescribed for life, as the
“patient is never cured”.)

All medications are toxic to the body. They contribute to the liver’s burden
and the body’s toxic load. Numerous studies have shown that many persons that
take certain psychiatric medications on a long term and daily basis live as much
as fifteen years less than the average person. Perhaps the substantially
shortened lifespan of those that regularly take certain psychiatric medications
for a long period of time is, at least partially, a result of medication’s
additional toxic load on the body.

If medication is not the answer to mental illness, then what is?

It will be inevitably known worldwide that (1) maximizing one’s functional
nutrient status, while (2) reducing one’s allergic load (especially food
allergens), and while (3) reducing one’s toxic load (to include toxins that
are commonly self-generated in one’s gut) can be profoundly symptom-corrective
of the symptoms of all mental illness.

It will also be inevitably known worldwide that (1) maximizing one’s
functional nutrient status, (2) reducing one’s allergic load (especially food
allergens), and (3) reducing one’s toxic load (to include toxins that are
commonly self-generated in one’s gut) can be CURATIVE of many physical and
mental illnesses, when these measures are carried out properly over a period of
time.

The truth is that ALL PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESSES INVOLVE MULTIPLE ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT
DEFICIENCIES, EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Indeed, multiple essential nutrient deficiencies ARE A MAJOR CAUSATIVE FACTOR of
ANY “psychiatric or mental illness” that one may be labeled with. (When one
is short of a “full deck of essential nutrients”, no organ in the body works
right, to include the organ called the brain. And almost everyone falls far
short of a “full deck of nutrients” given the quality of food these days.
This is especially true due to the fact that so much of what we eat is (1) grown
on seriously mineral deficient soil (fruits, vegetables, and grains today often
have less than 15% of many of the minerals that they contained fifty or sixty
years ago). It is also true due to the facts that (2) much of our foods are
processed in a factory (further depleting essential nutrient content), and (3)
much of our foods are cooked as well (cooking destroys some essential nutrients,
especially vitamins B complex and C, and it destroys nearly all, if not all, of
the enzyme
content of raw food).

When correcting (“curing”) ALL PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESSES it is best to use the
entire essential nutrient range in as broad and balanced a fashion as possible.

The body and the brain both call for broad based nutrition in order to properly
heal (from either physical or mental illness). When the body and brain get such
broad based nutrition, the innate natural wisdom of the body and the brain can
often “do the rest”, as far as healing is concerned.

It will be inevitably known worldwide that when treating ANY broad nutrient
deficiency state (all mental illnesses are such) the use of the entire nutrient
range in supplement form should ALWAYS be one of the healing measures that
should be used. I suggest an approach similar in scope and content to what my
son Willy and I are using. (Admittedly a little tailoring of vitamin, mineral,
essential fatty acid, and amino acid dosage to the individual, done by the
individual using such supplements, is often wise.)

In stating the above, I do not mean to diminish the importance of other natural
measures that should always be addressed to correct all “mental illness” as
well. (The avoidance of allergic foods, the resolution of candida and other
intestinal dysbiosis issues, a possible lack of digestive enzymes or HCL, and
insuring proper (adequate) hydration are some natural measures that immediately
come to mind here. There are other common dietary, gut, and malabsorptive
problems that should be addressed when correcting any “mental illness” as
well.

I admit to all that Willy’s baggie is not perfect, by any means. However, it
is “a very good conceptual and practical starting point” for a number of
“mental illnesses”, to include schizophrenia.

I do credit Adelle Davis with the primary concept underlying Willy’s baggie.
Adelle Davis is the first person that I am aware of that postulated “when
attempting to heal from whatever illness you may suffer from, take the entire
essential nutrient range ALL AT ONCE” (due to the fact that nutrients act in
synergy with each other).

Willy’s Baggie and Schizophrenia

Although I am far less familiar with schizophrenia than bipolar disorder (my own
illness), I have often wondered what a supplement approach such as Willy’s
baggie (my son’s broad based supplement regime) would do for the illness of
schizophrenia.

What I have seen since the summer of 2006 in the response from three persons
diagnosed with either schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder strongly
suggests that Willy’s baggie can help, or even greatly help, to resolve
schizophrenic symptoms.

Two of the persons that took Willy’s baggie both had the diagnosis of
schizophrenia, and both of them took only a single baggie.

The first of these persons emphatically stated, “Willy’s baggie is good
stuff!” He also said that he felt a lot better and could think a lot clearer
as a result of taking only a single baggie. Unfortunately, I lost touch with
this person, and do not have any means of reconnecting with him. If I did have a
means of getting in touch with this person I would send him more baggies in
which to try (to see how much more that they could do for him than the single
one he took).

The second person with a schizophrenic diagnosis that took Willy’s baggie
reported that his depressive symptoms were somewhat relieved by his taking only
a single baggie. In regard to this anecdotal report I did not get a lot of
detail, as it was not being reported to me directly by the person that took
Willy’s baggie… it was being reported to me through a third party.

Neither of the above two anecdotal reports gave me enough confidence in regard
to making a judgment as to whether Willy’s baggie might really make a
difference with a person with a schizophrenic diagnosis, even if such a judgment
was only a temporary and inconclusive one. Two single baggies taken by two
different schizophrenic persons with positive results was not nearly enough
information such that I felt it worthwhile to post to the Internet on the topic
of what Willy’s baggie can do for schizophrenia.

Then the following occurred…

In my recent travels I met a man with a schizoaffective diagnosis. This
particular person expressed an interest in trying Willy’s supplement regime to
see if it could help him. So I left him with a sample baggie in which to try and
my phone number and continued on my way (travel-wise).

About a week later I got a phone call from this man. He told me over the phone
“I took the baggie you gave me and it noticeably reduced both my depressive
symptoms and my hearing voices” (both of which were current symptoms for him
at the time).

I immediately sent this man via Parcel Post five more baggies in which to try,
to see how much more they could help him. I also told him over the phone that it
might help if he did some sort of a fiber purge before taking the baggies I was
going to send him, as doing such often helped to increase the amount of
nutrients absorbed. (I learned this years ago from experience.) I suggested that
he eat an apple or two as a fiber purge before he went to bed, and then take a
baggie when he got up in the morning, along with a large glass of water. (We
discussed “An apple a day helps keeps the doctor away” on the phone, and he
understood the thrust of what I was telling him in this regard.)

After taking a few more baggies from the shipment he received this man told me
over the phone on a subsequent call that every single baggie that he took
reduced his depressive symptoms and his “hearing voices symptoms” that much
more. He also told me that after his taking another two or three baggies after
the first that his depressive symptoms AND “his hearing voices symptoms”
were GONE!

Although the above anecdotal report is only a single instance of Willy’s
baggie reducing one of the hallmark symptoms of schizophrenia and
schizoaffective disorder (“hearing voices”), I am extremely encouraged by
it. The gentleman describing the baggie’s effects upon him was pretty emphatic
in regard to how much Willy’s broad based supplement routine had helped him to
resolve his problematic schizoaffective symptoms. He could not have been more
pleased with the results of his taking Willy’s baggies than he was, or so it
seemed while talking to him on the phone.

I only wish I had enough baggies (or funds to afford such) to send this man a
dozen or two dozen more baggies in which to try… such that more anecdotal
evidence could be generated from this man. (Unfortunately, I don’t have the
means to do this at the moment. Hopefully, this will change fairly soon.)

Other Successes With Willy’s Baggie

Willy’s baggie has helped a number of persons that have used it to correct
their physical and mental health.

One of these persons is Willy himself. Despite his only taking a baggie every
other day (to reduce its expense), my son Willy has very profoundly changed both
his physical and mental health. Willy has taught the entire world a huge lesson
about “what health is all about”. (I am so proud of him and what he has
done.)

A second person that Willy’s baggie approach has greatly helped is myself. As
a result of having great success in personally using Willy’s baggie, I have
discarded many of my old ideas about how to use nutritional supplements in order
to correct bipolar disorder in myself. It seems that the quality of my mental
health is heavily dependent on baggies. Without them for any extended period of
time I invariably get depressed. However, I do not worry when these depressions
set in. I do not worry because I know that as soon as I get enough money for
more baggies that within a matter of a few days I will no longer be depressed.

A third person that Willy’s baggie approach has greatly helped is a woman in
Columbus, Ohio that was able to profoundly recover from a state of longstanding
depression within 24 hours as the result of taking two of Willy’s baggies, and
drinking some raw vegetable juice. This particular woman was able to immediately
cease a series of ECT treatments that she had been undergoing for the treatment
of her depressive state.

A fourth person that Willy’s baggie approach has greatly helped is a man in
Australia that has been very successfully using “his own version” of
Willy’s baggie to correct bipolar disorder in himself.

I have seen two other persons that respond very positively to Willy’s baggie.
Both of these persons live in Utica, NY. One was treating a state of depression
in herself, and the other one was treating a state of “low energy”.

I have also received a few positive reports via the Internet since 2006 from
people that have tried Willy’s baggie, and were happy, or very happy, with the
results.

As profound as some of the above anecdotal stories are, none of them may be as
important as the recent anecdotal report that I received in regard to Willy’s
baggie resolving the hallmark schizophrenic symptom of “hearing voices” in a
man with a schizoaffective diagnosis.

It is my sincere belief that if Willy’s baggie can help one person to resolve
the symptom of “hearing voices”, then it can help thousands of others. The
potential of broad based nutrition taken all at once is absolutely enormous. It
is so enormous that it is destined to topple pharmaceutical medicine, as we know
it today. (This assumes that the drug industry is not successful in bribing
lawmakers in the U.S. to pass laws that take healing nutritional supplements out
of the general public’s hands.)

Failures With Willy’s Baggie

Since June 2006 I have witnessed three failures where Willy’s baggie was not
enough to make a big difference healing-wise (vs. about seven or eight
successes). All of these failures involved persons that were fairly heavy and
had substantially bloated abdominal areas. (None of these failures involved a
schizophrenic or schizopaffective diagnosis… in this regards, I have “hit
three out of three success-wise”.)

My feeling is that the three persons that I am aware of that failed to be
noticeably helped by Willy’s baggie could still be greatly helped by it (or a
similar supplement approach). However, these persons first needed to do quite a
bit of work on their GI tract (to fix it function-wise and “toxic-wise”).
They also needed to substantially change their diet as well.

The baggie just can’t do it all sometimes. This is especially true if someone
has a very toxic, inflamed, bloated, or malabsorptive gut… malabsorptive for
ANY reason. It is also true if the person in question is heavily ingesting
hidden food allergens, another situation that cripples the baggie’s
effectiveness.

Despite these failures, Willy’s baggie supplement approach (tailored to the
individual by his or her self) is the big part of “a real chemical answer”
in regard to healing the illnesses of bipolar disorder, ADHD, and depression.
Willy’s baggie supplement approach also holds great promise in regard to its
being a big part of “a real chemical answer” in regard to healing illnesses
such as schizophrenia and autism as well.

Conclusion

Mental illnesses are illnesses that modern pharmaceutical medicine commonly
claims are incurable. It seems that pharmaceutical medicine claims that these
illnesses are incurable simply for sake of the hundreds of billions of dollars
they are making by continually treating such illnesses “for life” with
various medications. (These people most certainly know better. However, they
cannot act on this knowledge, as it would cost them dearly to do so.)

Mental illnesses are illnesses that are very poorly treated by conventional
modern medical practice (psychiatry). And there is no motivation to change.
Psychiatry is making billions of dollars from treating mental illnesses
improperly, just as Big Pharma is (from selling psychiatric medication). Why
change, when so many dollars and so much medical prestige is at stake?

The truth is that the vast majority of cases of ALL mental illnesses can be
adequately chemically corrected via the use of nutritional supplements and other
natural measures.

The use of nutritional supplements and other natural measures (to correct
one’s nutrient, allergic, and toxic status) can result in complete, or almost
complete, control of ANY mental illness symptom, bar none. The degree of symptom
reduction that can be achieved via the use of nutritional supplements and other
natural means can be far superior than that which any medication(s) ever
invented could ever provide.

The use of nutritional supplements and other natural measures can even
“CURE!”… despite the fact that you may have had your “mental illness”
for decades.

The degree of symptom reduction or cure that the use of nutritional supplements
and other natural measures can provide to you is really up to you (the person
applying such to his or her self). This is as empowering as it gets… “You
can cure yourself of mental illness to whatever degree you desire. Indeed, you
are the only person that can truly do so, once you learn how, and you have
access to the means to do so.”

If a nutrient or natural cure to any mental illness is found, unfortunately the
pharmaceutical industry is likely to do everything it can to stop such a cure
from hurting its sales or profits. This is almost certainly the reason why I
have not been able to stay online without being repeatedly hacked, or repeatedly
suffer from “other heavy and undue computer interference”, since June 2006.
I have had five different personal computers hacked into and disrupted since
then. I have also had three computers of various family members hacked into and
disrupted while I was using them. In addition to this, I have had at least a
half dozen computers in a public library I often used hacked into and disrupted
when I was using them as well. I strongly believe that a party paid for by a
drug company (or drug companies) is doing this. (At this point, I believe that I
will have “multiple and unusual computer problems” whenever I get online for
any length of time
for the rest of my natural life, regardless of what antivirus, firewall, or
spyware removal software that I use.)

To me, this situation of Big Pharma vs. the truth about healing is simply a
race. To explain…

Big Pharma knows that it is doomed if the general public realizes that illnesses
such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are better treated by the use of
nutritional supplements and other natural means than by using any medication
whatsoever. As a result, they are doing everything that they can to get healing
nutritional supplements out of the public domain by bribing lawmakers all over
the world. They are also doing everything that they can to disrupt the truth
about natural non-drug healing growing over the Internet, or so it sure seems.

In this race, if Big Pharma succeeds in slowing the truth about healing down
long enough to legally get nutritional supplements out of the public’s hands
before their great healing power is discovered by the masses, then they win.

And in this race, if Big Pharma does not succeed in getting nutritional
supplements out of the general public’s hands before their great healing power
is discovered by the masses, then they lose.

[Incidentally, most mental health activists worldwide are totally unaware of
this “race”. The fact that nutrient chemistry and other natural means can be
fully corrective of “mental illness” symptoms is not commonly known amongst
persons affected by such. Even persons that are proactively fighting Big Pharma
and conventional psychiatric practice for human rights violations or other
reasons do not commonly know this. Few mental health activists realize that
nutrient and other natural chemistry that can cure mental illness, and
effectively treat “mental illness” symptoms in short order, even when such
symptoms are quite severe. Hopefully, this situation will soon change. Perhaps
it will change as a result of it being determined by other persons that
Willy’s baggie can greatly help to reduce the symptom of “hearing
voices”.]

If nutritional supplements and other natural healing measures are left in the
public domain much longer, the truth about their healing power is likely to
destroy entire classes of medications currently offered by Big Pharma. This
would include medications for virtually every mental illness, bar none. It would
also include medications for cholesterol, high blood pressure, arthritis, acid
reflux disease, and asthma. It would include most medications used to treat
cancer as well. All of these illnesses (and many others) are better treated by
the use of nutritional supplements and other natural measures vs. the use of ANY
drug whatsoever (as Big Pharma and our own Federal government would have us
believe.)

Who knows what else Big Pharma will do to protect their prestige, to protect
their markets, and to protect their sales and profits other than what they are
already doing in these regards? Perhaps God only knows. I sure don’t.

All I know is that my son Willy and I seem to have stumbled into a healing idea
that could help the entire human race (as all persons become broadly nutrient
deficient eventually, especially as they grow older).

At this point, I also believe that what Willy and I have discovered about how to
use nutritional supplements and other natural measures to heal from the
“pseudo-mental illnesses” of ADHD and bipolar disorder is likely to
represent a very significant breakthrough in regard to properly treating the
“pseudo-mental illness” called schizophrenia as well.

I continue to be in awe of the historical place that my son Willy and I are in.
I believe that we were the first two persons on earth to discover the tremendous
healing power of “taking the entire essential nutrient range in supplement
form all at once”.

The world in general apparently does not know quite what to make of me, or what
I have been posting on the Internet for quite some time (thankfully, there are a
few exceptions here).

Apparently, Big Pharma does know what to make of me. They are likely to have
been monitoring what I have been posting to the Internet for eight years, if not
more. (I first noticed “odd computer problems” on the computer that I was
using online in the year 2000. These problems began soon after I learned how to
use broad based amino acids and other nutritional supplements and natural
measures to profoundly treat a state of severe depression in an incredibly short
time in myself.)

Big Pharma most assuredly knows the huge threat that nutritional supplements and
other natural measures are to them. This is the reason that they have been
bribing governments worldwide for years to pass laws to take nutritional
supplements and other natural measures out of the hands of the general public.

Big Pharma also apparently knows that I, despite only being a layman, am
essentially the first person to figure out how to properly apply Adelle
Davis’s wisdom to mental illness, such that profound symptom reduction can
often be achieved in a very short time. For example, a state of very severe
depression with suicidal ideation attached can be chemically corrected in an
adequate fashion in less than a single day. (I learned such in April 2000, over
eight years ago.)

It is my belief that unless I generate further anecdotal proof that nutritional
supplements and other natural measures can cure mental illness (or greatly help)
the world is likely to continue to ignore what I am saying (for the most part).
It is also my belief that unless I generate more anecdotal proof than is
contained in this material that the world is likely to continue to ignore my
plight vs. Big Pharma. (Some portion of this industry is extremely likely to be
aware of me, as much as computers that I have been using online since June 2006
have been hacked or otherwise disrupted.)

I could generate more anecdotal proof that Willy’s baggie can greatly help to
correct depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, if I had the means to
do so. It is not that difficult to find volunteers for Willy’s baggie, and to
gather anecdotal reports. All I need is enough money to make up “free sample
packages” containing three to five baggies each and send them to persons via
Parcel Post (or hand them out to people that I meet). I then have to gather
anecdotal information in regard to how various persons respond to taking
Willy’s baggies. Doing all of this would be fairly simple and straightforward.

[It would admittedly be better if “I was there” when a person first began
taking baggies. In doing so, I could help such a person much better than if I
was simply shipping baggies to them from afar. Distance means that I have no way
to help persons in regard to monitoring response to baggies (and making
adjustments, if necessary), providing “gut counseling”, helping to effect
positive dietary changes, juicing raw organic vegetables, suggesting other
supplementation that may be wise, etc. Despite my saying this, my being there or
not would not stop me from being able to generate some pretty amazing anecdotal
stories… or so I strongly believe. The baggie is that powerful, at least for
some. The baggie is especially powerful for those without seriously compromised,
malabsorptive, and toxic GI tracts.]

I pray that someone that reads this document has the wisdom to believe in me,
and has the means to act appropriately on what I am saying. My progress in
trying to help the entire world is virtually dead in the water due to the lack
of adequate fiscal means.

If I am not granted the means to move forward on my own, I pray that someone in
alternative medicine that is in a position to effect change simply plagiarizes
my ideas, such that these ideas reach their true potential, and ultimately help
millions of persons some day. (I don’t care if I get any credit here or not.)

It seems that many persons in history have died for the sake of a great deal of
power, prestige, or money. What Willy and I have discovered about the recovery
of human health does not just threaten millions of dollars; it threatens
hundreds of billions, if not the collapse of drug oriented medicine as we know
it today. What Willy and I have discovered about the recovery of human health
also threatens a great deal of power and professional prestige as well.

I expect to gain nothing from my efforts on the Internet and elsewhere… except
maybe an early grave if I succeed in proving what I know to be true. What I know
about healing “mental illness” could cost drug corporations and tens of
thousands of persons a great deal of money (hundreds of billions of dollars in
total). Perhaps one of these corporations or persons may take this loss
personally, such that they then act negatively against me.

Regardless of what may or may not happen to me personally, I sincerely hope that
“some great good” for the entire human race comes out of what Willy and I
first discovered in August 2004 as the result of “fortuitous accident”. It
does not matter to me whether Willy or I are involved in the future development
of this “great good” or not. It also does not matter whether we gain
anything from what we have done. (I have never had any self-seeking agenda in
writing what I do and posting it to the Internet.) Willy and I seek nothing for
ourselves… we are only trying to help those that still suffer from “the big
lie” called “mental illness”.

INDIAN HEALTH MINISTER EXPRESSES OPPOSITION TO GM CROPS
 
Bhubaneswar: Speaking at a public meeting of farmers from all over Tamil Nadu at Kancheepuram yeaterday, the Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss has expressed his opposition to GM cropsand Bt Brinjal in particular. "PMK has always opposed GM seeds. As a Minister of PMK and as the Union Health Minister, I will continue to oppose it. As far as the recent controversy of Bt Brinjal is concerned, it is being brought into the country without proper research on its safety. We should oppose it collectively. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare as a policy will ensure holistic research of Bt Brinjal, including (on) health impacts and farmers' issues. We will not permit it into India otherwise".

 

Earlier, members of various farmers groups drew the attention of the Minister to the various concerns related to GM crops and foods and the farmers presented him with a memorandum. The Minister, in his speech said, "When there are so many indigenous varieties of brinjal in each region of India, where is there a need to borrow this Bt Brinjal from other countries?".

 

The Health Minister's statement in this meeting is unsurprising given that PMK, his party, was the first political party to take a clear stand against GM crops in India. Further, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss is known for his progressive political stand on issues like tobacco and alcohol.

 

On December 4th, a group of doctors from different streams of medicinal systems, including Dr R N Dutta the President of the Orissa Homeopathic Druggists Association, sought to meet with the Health Minister to express their serious concerns with regard to GM foods. They submitted a memorandum to the Minister pointing out that Genetic Engineering in our food and farming is inherently risky and irreversible and that decision-making in India is currently happening based on the crop developer's data without any independent research for assessing long term effects.

 

The Minister has also been receiving thousands of faxes from all over the country as part of the "I Am No Lab Rat" campaign launched by the Coalition for a GM-Free India and Hamara Beej Abhiyan. So far, more than 70000 Indians, including thousands from Orissa,  have endorsed a petition to the Health Minister saying that they refuse to become guinea pigs in this experimentation with GE foods.

 

Living Farms, Bhubaneswar, along with consumer, environmental, women's and organic farming groups from all over the country reacted by thanking the Minister for the progressive view he took on this matter, with his scientific background and for putting the interests and health of ordinary consumers of India at the centre of his policy with regard to GM crops and foods.

 

Living Farms, an organisation campaigning the introduction of GM crops including Bt Cotton into Orissa and the threat from the introduction of Bt Brinjal into the State since the last many years has welcomed the stance taken by the Union Health Minister and has thanked the people of Orissa for having actively participated in the "I AM NO LAB RAT" campaign. The organisation emphasised that the campaign will continue in order to create awareness about the various hazards of GM food..

 

"The fight is not yet over as Orissa is in the grip of large scale illegal cultivation of Bt Cotton and there has not been any declaration that the proposed field trials of Bt Brinjal in Orissa will be stopped. The threat therefore still remains as it is uncertain whether seed multinationals will stop their ongoing efforts to force Bt Brinjal and other genetically modified food crops into Orissa." "Just as Bt Cotton has entered Orissa illegally and with the full knowledge of the state administration what is the guarantee that other GM crops too will not enter into the state in the same fashion?"

African Holistic Holistic Health Chapter of New York is now accepting memberships.
