Regular aspirin use linked to pancreatic cancer
New US research indicates that taking aspirin daily
may increase the risk of contracting pancreatic
cancer.
Reported in the Journal of the National Cancer
Institute, the research follow 90,000 nurses for 18
years and their diseases correlated with diet and
lifestyle. Those taking two to three aspirins a week
showed no increase in risk, compared to those who took
fewer than two. But higher rates of use, over a long
period, did show a significant increase. Those who
took two aspirins a day over at least four years
showed an 86 percent increased risk.
The results come as a surprise since aspirin has been
previously linked to a reduced risk from rectal,
stomach and oesophageal cancer. It is also accepted as
being protective against heart disease, which is why
many people take it every day. Dr Eva Schernhammer,
who led the team, said she could not explain the
increased risk, although others have queried whether
aspirin might have been used to reduce pain some time
before the cancer was diagnosed, thus leading to a
misleading causal connection (Times, Jan 9).
