Please keep Arlene Mater in your prayers. I just found out that she went into the hospital early this morning due to some respitory problems she has been having. I haven't yet figured out how serious this is yet. Arlene is the Consumer Support Coordinator for our affiliate and has also acted as an unofficial liason between NAMI Lubbock and LRMHMR. She is someone that I respect and admire greatly and was pretty much my "right hand" before the formation of the Consumer Network.
She is accepting visitors. She is at Covenant Hospital (old Methodist) in South 867. It's best to park in the east parking garage and take the skyway across to the main building. You should be able to find it from there.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Arlene Mater has been put into the hospital last night for her lungs--she is having a very difficult time breathing. She's at Covenant South, Room 867 if you would like to visit or send flowers. I'm sure she would appreciate it.
If you'd like to call her, I believe the main line for all of Covenant is (806) 725-0000. Then you can ask for her or her room number.
Thanks,

outreach program/team to be brought in to the hospital some in
January!
Yes that's right our very own NAMI Lubbock outreach program is now in
working status and now we will be able to do what we set out to do.
Just thought that I could give some good news for the day!

The NAMI Lubbock Egroup exists to allow members to have intelligent, educational
and spirited discussions on any issues concerning primarily NAMI Lubbock,
especially Support, Education and Advocacy. The NAMI Lubbock Egroup is open to
only members of NAMI Lubbock who agree to conduct themselves in a professional
and courteous manner. This group is also governed by the terms of service of
Groups.Yahoo.com as listed on their website at
http://groups.yahoo.com/local/guidelines.html. While this announcement is not
intended to replace all the terms of service previously referred to, here are a
few of the highlights.
1. No personal attacks or threats will be tolerated. You can disagree with
anything or anyone and still be courteous.
2. Watch your language and choose your words carefully. We are a family
group.
3. You need to sign your name to every message. You are responsible for what
you post to this group. Your email address appears with your posts so there is
no such thing as an anonymous post here.

SHOUTING and is harder to read. Give your Caps Lock key a rest.
5. Do not cross post messages from other egroups to this one unless they
relate to mental health issues in this area. This egroup is not designed to
replace or duplicate egroups sponsored by NAMI Texas. Members of this egroup
are encouraged to also be a member of the NAMI Texas general egroup and should
not cross-post messages from the two groups. Members do not wish to receive
duplicate messages from the two groups.

I saw the interview and Sean's comments to him were over the top indeed as in most similar situations. I recognized the guy though. He's been on Hannity and Colmes on numerous occasions. I think the last time I saw him on there was when Rall disgusted the general public with a cartoon mocking Reagan the week following his death.
To say the least, the guy must be a jerk when even Alan Colmes (my favorite member of the liberal media) said to Ralls, "I am a liberal Democrat, but you (Ralls) do not represent me." The look on Ralls' face after that statement was priceless. You could tell that he knew that he had no allies at that point.

For those of you who didn't catch it at tonight's meeting, or those who may not have heard by now, the NAMI Lubbock website is located at http://namilubbock.nami.org.
I am the webmaster, so if you have any questions or comments about it, feel free to contact me.
Ted Rall, the cartoonist that drew the cartoon that has received some
attention in this egroup, is one of today's guests on Hannity and Colmes
on the Fox News Network. He says only one of his cartoons a year is
"bad" like this one and says that this one was inappropriate. He says
he does 150 cartoons a year and feels 1 out of 150 is a pretty good
average. Hannity mentioned several cartoons that were in bad taste over
the last 5 years including one that criticized the 9-11 widows. Hannity
told him "You need help" and You are disgusting."

The site's been updated again. And I haven't heard any feedback--positive or negative--about the website! Since I'm the new webmaster, I'd like to know what you guys think. After all, it is your site!

Once again, the website has been updated. Erin and I have been putting alot of work into it, so please utilize it! If there's anything you want to see on it, let us know.
We still have a few bugs to work out on it, but we have revamped the toolbar and have added and renamed many of the pages on there. We have an advocacy page that is under construction (and knowing our affiliate, it probably will be for years to come, lol) and a Consumer Network page is also slowly coming together as well. Too many updates and changes and not enough space to put it.
Be sure to check out the News page. There you will find all the happenings that are occuring within NAMI Lubbock.

The current cirriculum we provide are pretty much the same, plus two new workshops; "Coping with Symptoms and Side Effects" and "Managing Crisis and Emergency Situations."
The whole cirriculum is viewable through the site.

Does anyone know when the Barnes & Noble gift wrapping fundraiser is? I'd like to participate. Also, I don't know if anyone would be interested, but I'm going to be volunteering at the South Plains Food bank before Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you'd like to go with me, email me! I'd love some company.
We have again made some updates to the NAMI Lubbock website. We have pretty much revised all of the pages in one form or another. We have also in the process of constructing an education page, an outreach page, and are in the planning stages for an advocacy page as well as a page for the Consumer Network. Hopefully, we will also soon be able to put the newsletter on the website along with other brochures. We spent over 4 hours working on it and there were too many things changed, so visit the site and let us know what you think. We are open to any suggestions.
Thanks again.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Erin and I have begun to update the NAMI Lubbock website. The link to it is in my signature below. If you have any additions or corrections you would like to see made to the website, please repsond using the webmaster contact link located on the bottom of the main page of the website or on the e-group. We need membership input; remember, this is OUR website. Besides updating all of the information, we currently plan on adding a couple pages on education and support groups.
We do know of a couple of mistakes we made on the website. For instance, the executive officers e-mail links are a little messed up, there are a couple broken links on the links page, etc. If any of ya'll have time to go through the site in the next couple of days, please help us check our work and offer us some suggestions of what you would like to see added on there.

Last Saturday I recieved a check for $1486.64 from NAMI Texas. The
letter that came with it says that this is our share of an unrestricted
gift from the Stuart T. Low Foundation to NAMI Texas and it's affiliates
because they admire our work for persons with serious mental illness.
The foundation administrator is the Greater Houston Community Foundation
and the contact person for the Stuart T. Low Foundation is a lady in
London, England. Good work everybody!! Board members - be thinking
about how best to use this.

The education meeting with MHMR for next Wednesday has been cancelled.
MHMR is being audited this week so they have other things to do. We are
trying to schedule another date. I wonder how long they have known
about this audit?

Becky Driver from our consumer group called me today saying that her depression is taking its toll. She is feeling overwhelmed and she requested that I ask you all for prayers. So, please take a minute of your day to pray for Becky.
And I'm sure a phone call or two would let her know we're thinking about her during this difficult time. Her phone number is (806) 799-4328.
Subject: [NamiLub] Rider 55 Hearing Tomorrow in Lubbock
The hearing for the Rider 55 proposal will be in Lubbock tomorrow at the Holiday Inn downtown located at 801 Ave. Q. The part of the hearing discussing the closure and consolidation of the state hospitals will be from 6-8 pm.
This proposal is one that everyone in NAMI Texas needs to participate in and know about. From my understanding, the state is considering shuting down one of the four or five state hospitals that are still in operation today. Why should NAMI Lubbock and LRMHMR be interested in this? As of right now, public mental health, inpatient services go to Sunrise Canyon in Lubbock, which is a 30 bed unit. Sometimes, those 30 beds are full and they have to send patients to the Big Spring state hospital two hours away. This costs money to transport these patients; sometimes it happens and there's nothing we can do.
Under Rider 55, the Big Spring hospital could be closed. This means that Sunrise Canyon, if it is full, would then have to send patients to San Angelo, which is three plus hours away. What does that mean? That means it will cost us, the taxpayers, more money to transport.
Point made, we all need to be educated about this issue and your voice needs to be heard. Today, you have the opportunity to tell the state what you think about this.
It has also been confirmed that Jackie Shannon, former NAMI National President, will be coming from San Angelo to be in attendance for this important issue. If you haven't met her, this would be a great opportunity to do so.

There were only three people in the Team Solutions class last night--Andy, Heather, and I. I know the snow was a major factor in why some of you didn't show up. But, we missed you nonetheless! So, I'll catch you up briefly.
We had workbook 7 available. Andy cancelled class because the three of us have already taken Team Solutions. But, I have some upcoming news for consumers.
Cliff Gay, Consumer Outreach Consultant for NAMI Texas, has approved the showing of Dark Glasses and Kaleidoscopes and Living with Schizophrenia in the hospitals. Heather, Consumer Outreach Coordinator, is in the process of implementing those! We will start with Covenant Plaza. Also, NAMI Lubbock Consumer Network is in the process of getting a contract with Lubbock Regional MHMR Center. This is so exciting! More details to come soon.
Another thing I would like to share is that I have been working on a brochure for the Consumer Network. It is looking awesome! On the back page, I would like to add some quotes about NAMI Lubbock consumer programs from our consumers. I need about 2-3. If you would like to contribute a quote, I would be much appreciative. (And I will include your name.)
This is all for now. But be looking for more updates soon. Guys, we are growing and some great opportunities are coming our way! If you are interested in participating, then contact Andy Gibson, Consumer Network Director, adgibson@... or call him at (806) 798-7931.
