I really need everyone to do this aurvey as quickly as possible. It will be used to determine which programs will be funded in 2010 by the Texas Department of State Health Services. This is putting NAMI education programs up against programs from other organizations so we need to hear from NAMI members (both family members and consumers) quickly. The survey is scheduled to end this week but may be kept open a little longer but please respond ASAP. The very firt question is about how you heard about this survey. Please answer NAMI Texas. The introduction to the survey begins below.

One of the primary goals of the Mental Health Transformation effort in Texas is to make the mental health system consumer and family focused.  To assist in this effort, the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has allocated funding to establish a mental health consumer, family, and youth training and technical assistance center.  DSHS has contracted with Mental Health America of Texas and their sub-contractor, the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Texas (NAMI), to develop the center.

To ensure that the training provided through this center truly meets the needs of consumers, family members, and youth, as well as the professionals who support them, it is critical that we hear from them directly regarding the types of training that would be most useful.  We also want input from providers regarding training that they believe should be provided. The following link https://www.psychdata.com/s.asp?SID=129044  will take you to a training needs assessment.  Please send this email on to your organization’s distribution list and ask them to complete the survey.  If you have received this survey directly or indirectly and serve consumers, please make this survey available to them to complete, either by providing the link or making an Internet-connected computer available to them to use.

Another one of our tasks for the next few months is to make recommendations to DSHS regarding development of a peer training and certification program for Texas.  Section three of the survey asks for information that will help inform those recommendations.

You can complete the survey by clicking on the above link or you can copy and paste it in a browser.  We estimate the survey will take about fifteen minutes to complete.  If you have questions about this survey, please call Valarie Garza at NAMI, at 512-693-2000.  We would like to have as many responses as possible by May 15th; however, we will continue to accept responses after that.

Sadly today I found out that Daphna Simpson's son Tim took his own life.
As you know, he suffered badly with Bi-Polar disorder that was untreated. Please keep that family in your prayers.

In looking at the list of board members who are driving vs those flying, I have
a lot more driving to Lubbock than I expected and only a few that are flying.
Therefore we will have lots of cars available to move folks around so I really
won't need anybody else to help with that now BUT if you would like to attend
the board meeting of NAMI Texas, please feel free to come. It will be at the
Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery on the Tech campus. The meeting
begins at 9 am and will go through lunch. The afternoon will be board
development things. You guys on our board are encouraged to attend the board
development/training things in the afternoon too.

Dear NAMI Texas Board Members,
I'm looking forward to having everyone here in Lubbock next weekend for our
Spring board meeting. If you need instructions once you are here or get lost or
anything, please call me on my cell at 806-773-4090 and I'll guide you in. I am
working on a map to show the location of the hotel and the Center for the Study
Addiction and Recovery on campus which I'll email or have copies for you here.
Transportation however shouldn't be problem. I have rounded up a few members of
NAMI Lubbock to help transport you around but I'll have a map if you strike off
on your own. Lubbock is a easy town to move around in as the streets are
numbered going east and west and are alphabetical going north and south except
for few exceptions one of which you will be on. Just remember 12th Street equals
Broadway, its the main drag onto campus.
We will need to arrive on campus at 8:30 am where breakfast will await you.
Lunch will be served at noon in the center. The 10 day forcast says next
Saturday will be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 70's and low's in the 40's.
I'm still very vague about when many of you are arriving. If you are flying in,
we will do our best to pick you up at the airport if I know when to meet you
there. I would like to know if you are driving also so I can gauge how much
additional transportation I'll need.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Just a reminder to everyone, I have arranged for the board of NAMI Texas to meet
in Lubbock on April 18. I will probably need some help with transportation from
some of you if you don't mind helping me do a little pickup and delivery of
folks at the airport and between the Raddison and campus. Of course, all board
meetings are open to NAMI members so you are welcome to attend. The meeting will
be held at the Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery at TTU.

NAILS IN THE FENCE
Make sure you
read all the way down to the last sentence.

(Most
importantly the last sentence)

There once was
a little boy who had a bad temper.  His Father gave him a bag of
nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer
a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day
the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.  Over the next
 few weeks, as
he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily
gradually dwindled down.  He discovered it was easier to hold his
temper than to drive those nails into the fence.  Finally the day
came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all.

He told his
father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one
nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days
passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father
took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.  He said, 'You

have done
well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence.  The fence will
never be the same.  When you say things in anger, they leave a
scar just like this one.  You can put a knife in a man and draw
it out.  But It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry,
the wound will still be there.  A verbal wound is as bad as a
physical one. Remember that friends are very rare jewels, indeed.
They make you smile and encourage you to succeed.  They
lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us..'

It's National
Friendship Week.  Show your friends how much you care.  Send
this to everyone you consider a FRIEND, even if it means sending it
back to the person who sent it to you!  If it comes back to you,
you will then know you have a circle of friends.

YOU
ARE MY FRIEND AND I AM HONORED!

Now send this
to every friend you have!!  And to your
family (they need to
know that you love them too).

Please forgive
me if I have ever left a 'hole' in your fence.

Hey gang,
I need EVERYONES help with this little project. City Bank is giving
away five $10,000.00 awards to local non-profits and all we have to do
is to vote for NAMI Lubbock on their website. I'm sure the new board
members and officers would really like to have $10,000 to use next
year to run NAMI Lubbock on. You need to vote every day and can vote
once for every email address you have. I'm voting on two addresses
now and am about to jump to 4 every day. The contest runs through Dec
21. We are getting a late start at this so we will need to stay the
course of the voting. Our friends at MHMR are currently leading the
vote getting as of today because they have been very organized in
their efforts. Please help as we need the money to help continue our
operations. Remember this is everyday and $10,000.00 could make
SSSooooo much difference in our operations. OK, here's the link to
click on:

https://www.citybankonline.com/community-rewards/vote.html

David

PS They are also giving away $500.00 to a lucky voter so vote early
and vote often.

and courteous manner. This group is also governed by the terms of service of
Groups.Yahoo.com as listed on their website at
http://groups.yahoo.com/local/guidelines.html. While this announcement is not
intended to replace all the terms of service previously referred to, here are a
few of the highlights.
   1. No personal attacks or threats will be tolerated. You can disagree with
anything or anyone and still be courteous.
   2. Watch your language and choose your words carefully. We are a family
group.
   3. You need to sign your name to every message. You are responsible for what
you post to this group. Your email address appears with your posts so there is
no such thing as an anonymous post here.
   4. Do not write your message in all capitals. All caps is perceived as
SHOUTING and is harder to read. Give your Caps Lock key a rest.
   5. Do not cross post messages from other egroups to this one unless they
relate to mental health issues in this area. This egroup is not designed to
replace or duplicate egroups sponsored by NAMI Texas. Members of this egroup
are encouraged to also be a member of the NAMI Texas general egroup and should
not cross-post messages from the two groups. Members do not wish to receive
duplicate messages from the two groups.

Subject: New funding stream for NAMI Lubbock.....

Hey folks,

Want to help out NAMI Lubbock and get rid of some of your junk too?  Thanks to a new funding stream we found recently, that is now a reality thanks to a place called Charity Choice.

Charity Choice is a thrift store located on 29th Drive and Marsha Sharp Freeway (across from United in the old United space).

So here's how it works.  Let's say you were to have a garage sale and wanted to get rid of everything you didn't sale.  Simply take it over to Charity Choice and tell them that you want to donate the items on behalf of NAMI Lubbock (our charity number is #4).  Once NAMI gets enough items in stock, then we are able to receive "commissions" if you will off the sales of the items donated in our name.  Kind of works like a consignment store accept the non-profit gets the sale.

Now here's the catch.  NAMI will receive a check at the end of each month ONLY WHEN we have sold over $50 worth of merchandise.  This is very easily attainable however if you donate large items such as furniture, desks, etc.

The other nice thing about Charity Choice is NAMI Lubbock will eventually be sent vouchers that we can disperse to those who may come to us looking for clothing, necessities, etc.  For those of ya'll that aren't aware, about 1/3 of the consumers that visit the CLC on a daily basis are homeless.  This would be a great way to help those in need and provide outreach to that population.

So next time you're cleaning out your garage, have left overs from yard sales, or just need to get rid of that extra couch, think about us and take it to Charity Choice located at 29th Drive and Marsha Sharp Freeway.

For any other questions, call the NAMI line at (806) 783-9268.  And make sure to pass this info along to as many people as possible.

Thanks,

Andy Gibson

I want to remind everyone of the board meeting this Thursday night at the CLC
again.
This time, for sure, I have attached a copy of the minutes for our meeting but I
will have printed copies there since I sent to the wrong address and now you are
getting it so late.
See you there.

Board members,
Can we have a board meeting in one week on June 26th? 7 pm at the CLC
would work for me. Let me know if you can NOT come. The last item of
business for that meeting will be to set the date for the next board
meeting so we can get back on schedule so check you calendars for late
September.
