State Hospital Drug Studies

NAMI Texas has been contacted by the Partnership for Prescription Assistance of Texas, which is the state chapter of a nationwide program that helps people who lack prescription coverage get the medicines they need through the public or private program that is right for them.

The Partnership is starting a statwide tour to educate and publicize this program, and will have a bus driving to various communities across the state and on-site help will be provided to anyone interested in trying to find and enroll in the right prescription program.

The tour will be in Lubbock at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center tomorrow, February 2nd, at 10 am. (Although I am not exactly sure where at exactly.) I myself will try and commit to show up at about 9:30 am.

Robin Peyson selected as NAMI Texas E.D.

After an extended search by the NAMI Texas Executive Committee, Robin Peyson of Bastrop, Texas has been selected to replace Joe Lovelace as Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Texas.

Ms. Peyson has a Bachelor Degree in Psychology from Williams College; Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan and is a licensed chemical dependency counselor.

Her present job is Service Systems Development Specialist for the Department of State Health Services. In that position she is the liaison between DSHS and the statewide advocacy organizations, including NAMI Texas. Prior to DSHS, she was the Program Director for several community-based organizations delivering services to children and adolescents.

Ms. Peyson will start her employment as E.D. of NAMI Texas on January 23, 2006

Please note that starting next week, we will be entering through Oakwood Baptist Church on the Northeast side of the building for all Tuesday night meetings. Those of you who have been coming know that as a result of the construction that has been taking place for the past year plus, we have been having to enter the church on the West side of building.

Now that the construction is finally completed, members and guests of NAMI may now park in the Oakwood Parking lot or on 60th Street and enter through the old Church office entrance. As always, there will be signs on the doors directing you where to go and we'll try our best to have greeters there at 6 pm next week.

Christal,

I want to thank you for your report on NAMI and the Miami shooting. I have received several complements from both folks inside and outside of NAMI about it. I cannot put into words what it meant to have you do this for us.

To have an individual in the media come and report on a story like this with so much energy, understanding and compassion was very refreshing. I, along with many others who participated, saw that and truly appreciate it. As I mentioned before, I personally was very apprehensive about doing this after the A-J recklessly edited my story and titled it for shock value. That kind of reporting only increases the stigma NAMI fights so hard to counter.

We hope that as a result of this report, Fox 34, along with other media avenues, will utilize NAMI Lubbock as the city's voice in relation to mental health related issue's like this one. (I kind of think of ourselves, to an extent, as the AARP of mental illness.) When it comes to our community, we are the individuals who live with or live with those who have a mental illness. Therefore, we can provide alot of commentary and insight to things that many local citizens may not be able to understand.

Thanks again for your "fair and balanced" reporting on this topic.

(CBS 42) AUSTIN When someone is committed to a state mental hospital, the public assumes that person will get the help he or she desperately needs.

So why is the state allowing big pharmaceutical companies to use patients as guinea pigs to test experimental drugs?

Austin is home to one of Texas' state hospitals. These hospitals are where mentally ill Texans, who have nowhere else to go, are supposed to get the psychiatric treatment they desperately need.

The Texas Department of State Health Services Web site boasts of its adolescent program and its unit for Spanish-speaking patients.

But there's one unit the state doesn't want to talk about � the clinical research unit.

Sixteen beds are set aside to allow big pharmaceutical companies to sponsor drug studies using mental patients, under the state's care, as test subjects.

CBS 42 has obtained records showing that staff at state hospitals help recruit patients into studies of experimental drugs. These are drugs not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Some are being tested on mentally ill patients for the very first time.

"I think this is just shameful abuse of people that are in the mental hospitals here in Texas," said
Austinite Jim Harrington, director of the Texas Civil Rights Project.

CBS 42 Investigates asked Harrington and Austin psychiatrist Deborah Peel to review some of the records obtained.

"I think there are serious problems whether this is moral and ethical treatment,� Peel noted. �Once again, we have people who have no means, who are dependent on the state system, and the state system is working hand-in-glove with private corporations. They are essentially turning the state hospital population into research subjects"

In many studies, patients are taken off the medications that are working for them.

"It�s very, very risky to do that," Peel said.

Some patients get the new study drug, while others get what is called a �placebo� -- a sugar pill.
The patients don't know which they are getting and neither do their doctors.

�To take people off medication when they have just been admitted for an inability to function and might have even been a harm to themselves or others, that raises real questions for me,� Peel said.

What's worse, according to Peel, patients aren't told if they are taking the placebo even if they are discharged from the hospital during the study.

"I think there are real ethical questions about taking people off medications when the consequences can be severe harm to them,� Peel said. �They could get suicidal. They could harm others. They certainly can't be productive or work, and, so, I think there are real ethical questions about taking people off effective medications."

"How can you not expect to have problems when that occurs, and how can you not understand that you are playing pretty dramatically with someone's mental health when you do that?" Harrington asked.

For patients who are given the new medication, there's no guarantee it will help, and the risks and long-term side effects are unknown.
If something does goes wrong, the drug companies say they won't bear responsibility. One company wrote: "We have no plans to give you any money if you are injured."

So, how can this happen? The state claims that these mental patients give what's called 'informed consent.' They sign a detailed document describing the risks and benefits of the study.

"I think that's a very shameful argument, really, because the reason people are in the mental hospital to start with is because the judge has made a finding that they are a danger to themselves or others,� Harrington said. �There really is a kind of limited capacity."

"I think there are real questions how informed their consent would be under those situations, because these are not people who have the means to choose to go elsewhere for treatment, and so, there's a powerful element of pressure, of coercion that they have to feel," Peel said.

The state says all studies are monitored by a review board. But that board's activities are secret.
Months ago, we asked the Texas Department of Health Services for detailed records about these studies. The state claims those are secret too, even writing to 19 pharmaceutical companies and researchers suggesting they send letters to the attorney general's office to fight our request and stop us and you from seeing those records.

This past week, the attorney general ruled in our favor. In future reports, CBS 42 will further investigate these secret studies and examine how the state is treating the mentally ill it is supposed to be protecting.

CBS 42 requested an on-camera interview addressing the issues in this story from the agency that oversees Texas� mental hospitals. The Department of Health Services said no one was available.

Special thanks goes to Daphna Simpson for her donation of a Dell 2400 computer to the NAMI office. It is less than a year old and will is in excellent shape. We will be using this as a second computer for the office and once we have a volunteer office staff, hopefully around the first of the year, it will be the staff computer. I've even been able to set up the affiliate e-mail address on it - namilubbock@...

In the meantime, we're going to be purchasing a wireless router system for it so the internet will be a breeze (we already have DSL here at the office) and will hopefully be networking the two computers together. She's also talked about donating another lap top! However, that is still pending.

Thanks again Daphna. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will be used extensively.

Well, we finally have a house under contract.
The closing is set for Nov. 7th
The house is in Mansfield (south of Fort Worth, still in Tarrant County).
I will be moving in first, as my job will start on or before December 1st (I
have already been working some, but plan to take off after the 15th of
October to concentrate on the move).
I will be taking all my office eq & files and will work out of the home with
my clients that have decided to stick with me.
Bob's plans are less definate, as he has farm equipment to dispose of and
landlords to appease.
He hasn't got our house on th market yet, but we are  working on that and
hopefully the process will go into overdrive after the 15th of October.
The house we are buying does not have a fence, so the dogs have to wait on
that.
I told Bob I would steal his dog if he drags his feet on joining me.
It is really hard to leave Lubbock & all our friends.  We have loved it
here.

I have vacated my rented office space in Lubbock and moved everything home
until the move (still in limbo).
I have been cleaning out closets for months, and now have to deal with extra
office furniture & files.
I made the decisionn to go "paperless" (well, less paper).
I have a new super duper computer, scanner and paper shredder and I am busy
making old paper files disappear.
I have a couple of extra computers that I need to get rid of.
One is a Dell Dimension still under warranty and the other is an older Dell
laptop with issues.
If the org is interested, let me know.  The desktop is freshly reformatted
and ready to go, including all software that came with it (less than a year
ago).
The laptop will need to have the hard disk cleaned up.
Both have ethernet, etc.
I would like to give them to the group.

Howdy fellow Legends,

This is your Captain speaking.....

Congratulations!!! You've done it! As of 4 pm CST, we've raised $6,100! And that's with two and half days to spare! You should all be very proud of yourselves! I know that you all worked very hard and that we all had some very serious challenges to overcome (like the biggest national emergency since 9/11).

Although we have alot of celebrating to do, I want to cover a couple of quick things before this weekend before the big dance.

Welcome to our newest Legend - William Harvey, Janet's son, has joined us at the last minute. We're honored to have another walker join us for this great cause. Welcome to the Legends William!

Donor Appreciation Dinner was a tremendous success this past Tuesday night. Although I'm not sure what the exact number of attendee's was (I think it was in the 40s) and we raised over $500 at the dinner. Before the dinner, we were reporting $4,975; that was less than 48 hours ago. In other words, we've raised over $1,000 since Tuesday night. I'd say in retrospect, it was worthwhile. Special thanks goes to Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc. for sponsoring the dinner and Wiley's BBQ for doing the catering. Also want to thank Janet Harvey, Dr. Jim Gamble, Bruce Roark, and Sheryl Bybee for speaking during our "How NAMI benefits.....the provider, the professional, the family member, and the consumer" portion of our dinner. Thanks for everyone who volunteered to set-up and tear down before and after the dinner. Finally, special thanks goes to Sharp's Flowers, Heros and Legacies, and Family Photo for providing our door prizes for the evening. Plus, anyone and everyone else I might have forgotten, we appreciate all your help.

Thanks for Marcy for going back to her "roots." Marcy Mayberry did a radio spot on KRBL (The Rebel) 105.7 yesterday morning around 8:15 am. I know several of us tuned in and all of us thought you did an excellent job Marcy. For those of you who don't know, Marcy has quite an extensive background in radio. Back a few years ago, she was the GM of a radio station in the Amarillo area. On top of this, she's done tons of footwork for us in NAMIWalks and we are all amazed by your talents. From all of your fellow Legend's, thanks Marcy!

Thanks to MHMR for doing the shirts. Screen Print, Inc., a child company of LRMHMR, did the printing for us. We went ahead and decided to charge everyone for their shirts, but S-XL are $6.50 and XXL are $7.50 so I didn't think anyone would mind. Cash or check may be sent to Janet Harvey and can be given to her at the Walk. Checks are to be made out to Screen Print, Inc.

Checks - If you still have donor's checks you're holding on to, please stop! I need them! We're going to try and get some of them over to Austin for the Walk.

On-line Donations - Due to the amount of last minute on-line contributors, I need a list of these folks contact information ASAP.

Other than that, I don't have much else to say. What is there to say? Ya'll did it! Congratulations! My parents, myself, Marcy, and Sheryl leave for Austin tomorrow, William, Janet and Noelle are coming in on Saturday and Heather, Rex and Danette fly in on Sunday.

I must say, no offense to Diana, but I'm not sure why each affiliate didn't receive one of these videos at the very beginning of the entire NAMIWalks process - if this video doesn't get you motivated, nothing will! It's a 5 minute informercial about NAMIWalks and the wonderful work that NAMI does for the community. It was a tremendous help to show our audience what NAMIWalks was instead of me telling them, for the milliointh time, which is what I have been doing thus far.

After that, we had a segment of the program called, "How NAMI Lubbock benefits me...." spoken from the provider, the professional, the family member, and the consumer point-of-view. Our provider was our fellow walker Janet Harvery of Lubbock Regional MHMR, our professional was everybody's favorite therapist, Dr. Jim Gamble, the family was our beloved affiliate VP, Bruce Roark, and our consumer was NAMI Humble transfer, Sheryl Bybee (who to date has raised over $1,500 in both online and offline contributions). All of their stories and complementary words of how NAMI has benefitted them were an inspiration to all.

We ended the night with hearing from the walkers and having them thank their contributors. We also announced our grand total raised before the dinner - $4,975.

During and since the dinner, we've raised over $500 giving us a grand total of $5,520 as of 10 am this morning. Our goal is $6,000 and we have a few Lubbock NAMIWalks representatives out in full force today talking to area businesses, individuals and even a foundation or two.

Anyways, I just want to thank everyone who made all of this possible. We're almost to our goal that everyone laughed at two months ago when I set it.

Expect Recovery; expect positive things altogether, or else you won't recognize them once they come your way.

I just recieved a phone call that the meeting area at Oakwood has to
be rearranged tomorrow for a Wednesday lunch deal so we will not be
able to decorate tonight as planned.  Please contact Erin for an

afternoon.

I just wanted to let everyone know, especially those in the Lubbock area, that there is a quarter page ad about NAMIWalks in today's (Monday) Lubbock Avalanche Journal on page A-8. It looks great. It tells the reader more about NAMIWalks, how to donate online and offline, and our affiliate contact information, etc.

Special thanks goes to Danette Castle, Beth Moore, and Janet Harvey at Lubbock Regional MHMR for funding the ad.

Hi All,

I am compiling a list of all donors to NAMIWalks, whether it be $5.00 or $500.00 - so I can send them an official thank you letter with a tax exemption status if they need it for their records.

Now here's what I need from you: Please send me a list of names, addresses, and amount donated of all of the people who mailed you a donation, donated online, or personally handed a check to you. Also, include yourself!

I would appreciate this very much - it will save me tons of time trying to get these letters out in a timely fashion. Please try to send them to me no later than September 30.
