Special thanks goes to Daphna Simpson for her donation of a Dell 2400 computer to the NAMI office. It is less than a year old and will is in excellent shape. We will be using this as a second computer for the office and once we have a volunteer office staff, hopefully around the first of the year, it will be the staff computer. I've even been able to set up the affiliate e-mail address on it - namilubbock@...
In the meantime, we're going to be purchasing a wireless router system for it so the internet will be a breeze (we already have DSL here at the office) and will hopefully be networking the two computers together. She's also talked about donating another lap top! However, that is still pending.
Thanks again Daphna. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will be used extensively.

Well, we finally have a house under contract.
The closing is set for Nov. 7th
The house is in Mansfield (south of Fort Worth, still in Tarrant County).
I will be moving in first, as my job will start on or before December 1st (I
have already been working some, but plan to take off after the 15th of
October to concentrate on the move).
I will be taking all my office eq & files and will work out of the home with
my clients that have decided to stick with me.
Bob's plans are less definate, as he has farm equipment to dispose of and
landlords to appease.
He hasn't got our house on th market yet, but we are working on that and
hopefully the process will go into overdrive after the 15th of October.
The house we are buying does not have a fence, so the dogs have to wait on
that.
I told Bob I would steal his dog if he drags his feet on joining me.
It is really hard to leave Lubbock & all our friends. We have loved it
here.
Daphna Simpson
I have vacated my rented office space in Lubbock and moved everything home
until the move (still in limbo).
I have been cleaning out closets for months, and now have to deal with extra
office furniture & files.
I made the decisionn to go "paperless" (well, less paper).
I have a new super duper computer, scanner and paper shredder and I am busy
making old paper files disappear.
I have a couple of extra computers that I need to get rid of.
One is a Dell Dimension still under warranty and the other is an older Dell
laptop with issues.
If the org is interested, let me know. The desktop is freshly reformatted
and ready to go, including all software that came with it (less than a year
ago).
The laptop will need to have the hard disk cleaned up.
Both have ethernet, etc.
I would like to give them to the group.

Congratulations!!! You've done it! As of 4 pm CST, we've raised $6,100! And that's with two and half days to spare! You should all be very proud of yourselves! I know that you all worked very hard and that we all had some very serious challenges to overcome (like the biggest national emergency since 9/11).
Although we have alot of celebrating to do, I want to cover a couple of quick things before this weekend before the big dance.
Welcome to our newest Legend - William Harvey, Janet's son, has joined us at the last minute. We're honored to have another walker join us for this great cause. Welcome to the Legends William!
Donor Appreciation Dinner was a tremendous success this past Tuesday night. Although I'm not sure what the exact number of attendee's was (I think it was in the 40s) and we raised over $500 at the dinner. Before the dinner, we were reporting $4,975; that was less than 48 hours ago. In other words, we've raised over $1,000 since Tuesday night. I'd say in retrospect, it was worthwhile. Special thanks goes to Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc. for sponsoring the dinner and Wiley's BBQ for doing the catering. Also want to thank Janet Harvey, Dr. Jim Gamble, Bruce Roark, and Sheryl Bybee for speaking during our "How NAMI benefits.....the provider, the professional, the family member, and the consumer" portion of our dinner. Thanks for everyone who volunteered to set-up and tear down before and after the dinner. Finally, special thanks goes to Sharp's Flowers, Heros and Legacies, and Family Photo for providing our door prizes for the evening. Plus, anyone and everyone else I might have forgotten, we appreciate all your help.
Thanks for Marcy for going back to her "roots." Marcy Mayberry did a radio spot on KRBL (The Rebel) 105.7 yesterday morning around 8:15 am. I know several of us tuned in and all of us thought you did an excellent job Marcy. For those of you who don't know, Marcy has quite an extensive background in radio. Back a few years ago, she was the GM of a radio station in the Amarillo area. On top of this, she's done tons of footwork for us in NAMIWalks and we are all amazed by your talents. From all of your fellow Legend's, thanks Marcy!
Thanks to MHMR for doing the shirts. Screen Print, Inc., a child company of LRMHMR, did the printing for us. We went ahead and decided to charge everyone for their shirts, but S-XL are $6.50 and XXL are $7.50 so I didn't think anyone would mind. Cash or check may be sent to Janet Harvey and can be given to her at the Walk.Checks are to be made out to Screen Print, Inc.
Checks - If you still have donor's checks you're holding on to, please stop! I need them! We're going to try and get some of them over to Austin for the Walk.
On-line Donations - Due to the amount of last minute on-line contributors, I need a list of these folks contact information ASAP.
Other than that, I don't have much else to say. What is there to say? Ya'll did it! Congratulations! My parents, myself, Marcy, and Sheryl leave for Austin tomorrow, William, Janet and Noelle are coming in on Saturday and Heather, Rex and Danette fly in on Sunday.
And as always, if anyone has any questions or comments, please let me know. Until then, take care.

Howdy ya'll,
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out to our Donor Appreciation Dinner last night. A good time was had by all. The 40+ people were greeted into the room with by a large screen showing a slide show of last years walk. BBQ was served by Wiley's (good stuff) and the whole thing was sponsored by Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc.
Here are the highlights of the evening:
We showed the 2005 "NAMIWalks" video which was overnighted by our wonderful Diana Kern. I must say, no offense to Diana, but I'm not sure why each affiliate didn't receive one of these videos at the very beginning of the entire NAMIWalks process - if this video doesn't get you motivated, nothing will! It's a 5 minute informercial about NAMIWalks and the wonderful work that NAMI does for the community. It was a tremendous help to show our audience what NAMIWalks was instead of me telling them, for the milliointh time, which is what I have been doing thus far.
After that, we had a segment of the program called, "How NAMI Lubbock benefits me...." spoken from the provider, the professional, the family member, and the consumer point-of-view. Our provider was our fellow walker Janet Harvery of Lubbock Regional MHMR, our professional was everybody's favorite therapist, Dr. Jim Gamble, the family was our beloved affiliate VP, Bruce Roark, and our consumer was NAMI Humble transfer, Sheryl Bybee (who to date has raised over $1,500 in both online and offline contributions). All of their stories and complementary words of how NAMI has benefitted them were an inspiration to all.
We ended the night with hearing from the walkers and having them thank their contributors. We also announced our grand total raised before the dinner - $4,975.
During and since the dinner, we've raised over $500 giving us a grand total of $5,520 as of 10 am this morning. Our goal is $6,000 and we have a few Lubbock NAMIWalks representatives out in full force today talking to area businesses, individuals and even a foundation or two.
Anyways, I just want to thank everyone who made all of this possible. We're almost to our goal that everyone laughed at two months ago when I set it.
Expect Recovery; expect positive things altogether, or else you won't recognize them once they come your way.

I just recieved a phone call that the meeting area at Oakwood has to
be rearranged tomorrow for a Wednesday lunch deal so we will not be
able to decorate tonight as planned. Please contact Erin for an
alternate time to meet tomorrow as we will have to decorate just
before the dinner unless someone can do it during the day tomorrow
afternoon.

I just wanted to let everyone know, especially those in the Lubbock area, that there is a quarter page ad about NAMIWalks in today's (Monday) Lubbock Avalanche Journal on page A-8. It looks great. It tells the reader more about NAMIWalks, how to donate online and offline, and our affiliate contact information, etc.
Special thanks goes to Danette Castle, Beth Moore, and Janet Harvey at Lubbock Regional MHMR for funding the ad.
I also want to invite those in our community out to our NAMIWalks Donor Appreciation Dinner tommorow night at 6:30 pm at Oakwood Baptist Church located on 60th and Avenue U. This is an RSVP only event and reservations are due today so please call us at (806) 783-9268 if you plan on attending.
Special thanks goes to Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc. for sponsoring this event and Wiley's BBQ for doing the catering.
See some of you tomorrow night. The rest of you I hope to see this weekend!
I am compiling a list of all donors to NAMIWalks, whether it be $5.00 or $500.00 - so I can send them an official thank you letter with a tax exemption status if they need it for their records.
Now here's what I need from you: Please send me a list of names, addresses, and amount donated of all of the people who mailed you a donation, donated online, or personally handed a check to you. Also, include yourself!
I would appreciate this very much - it will save me tons of time trying to get these letters out in a timely fashion. Please try to send them to me no later than September 30.
Tonight, NAMI Lubbock will be participating in Destination Dignity sponsored by MHMR as a special thanks to the community for their continued support for mental health. The event will take place at the Court House lawn (9th St. and Broadway) at 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be live music featuring a local jazz band, lots of information to gather, and people to meet!
Members of the Consumer Network are setting up our table - a special thanks goes out to Andy as he is in charge of purchasing and gathering all of the supplies for our table to make it look great and have lots of info!!!! Also, a big thanks goes to Marcy and Heather as they will be promoting NAMIWalks there. Hopefully we can raise some more money tonight!
Please come by and support us! I hope to see you there.
Thanks,

I just wanted to share with you all the below e-mail from Diana Kern, Special Events Coordinator from NAMI Texas. As you all know, support is what has put NAMI Lubbock on the map. I would encourage as many of you as possible to send her a quick note and share your story.
I might be able to access the cox account for another day or so, but I'm moving my personal pc over the the NAMI Lubbock office tomorrow and am having the outlook express account changed at that time.
Thanks.

This is your captain speaking. Things are going great in NAMIWalk land! Especially if you're a part of the Lubbock Legends team! To date, we have reported $1,850 online! However, I got another couple donations tonight which I believe puts us at $1,975! We're almost to the $2,000 mark. We're almost 1/3 to our goal! We still have a month to go before the walk and we've not even tapped into our professional community yet. Keep it up folks; I think we might just make it to our $6,000 goal!
Now, a couple of announcements to make:
Congrats goes out to Sheryl. If you're on the NAMITX e-group, then you've already heard that she's raised the second highest amount of money on-line. Who is the highest you might ask? The infamous Pat Cramer - former NAMI Austin president. Sheryl, you've made us all proud by raising a combined total of........$470 to date. Keep up the good work! She's also taken the lead on several other projects for NAMIWalks locally; we're lucky to have her with us.
On-line pages need to be up! Please get them up soon. Janet is the perfect example of what having an on-line page set-up will do. Within just a couple of hours, Brian Shannon, the founding president on NAMI Lubbock, donated $50 to her on-line. So Rex, Danette, David, DeAnna, and Jay.....five minutes is all it takes and if you don't want your picture on the site, you don't have to put one on there. There are template pictures you can use (like on Marcy and Janet's pages) or you can use the NAMI Lubbock graphic.
Slight change in check donations and pledges. As you receive checks, forward them on to me and I will give them to DeAnna. I know I made a big deal about this in my last e-mail and now I'm changing my strory. But I want to confirm with ya'll whether or not the checks, invoices, pledges, etc. are being reported as offline donations. If you have an online page, add them to your offline donation section, unless you wish for it to be added to someone else's pot who does not have an online page. Hopefully that doesn't sound too confusing.
Destination Dignity will be on Thursday, September 15th, from 5:30-7:00 pm at the Lubbock Courthouse Gazeebo. NAMI Lubbock will be there promoting NAMIWalks. We'll have a table set up with affiliate info and Walk info. We need volunteers for the event. I think I have a couple already, but we need all the help we can get. If you're interested, let me know. It should be a good time had by all.
MEDIA!!!!! A big thank you for all the help MHMR is giving us with media assitance. They will be donating a quarter page spot for NAMI Lubbock to advertise for NAMIWalks and for affiliate services in the month of September and are also working with Jane Prince Jones and other radio stations to get some spots on their shows. Janet even shared with me today that they are even going as far as trying to sell the idea of having Karen McCay (or someone from NewsChannel 11) report live from Austin on NAMIWalks; I am an optimist, so I wish them the best of luck! Jay, Marcy, Erin, Heather, Sheryl, and myself are all willing to do media spots if needed. I'm sure my father will be as well. (FYI, the great thing about all of us is that we all have different diagnosis'; among the six of us, you have schizophrenia, schizoaffective, cyclothymic, type II bi-polar, depression, ADHD and borderline personality disorders represented.)
September Dinner is still up in the air. It will be held on Tuesday September 27th in place of the monthly meeting and will act as a launch pad celebration for NAMIWalks. Janet is working on getting the dinner catered by a drug company, however if we prove to be unsuccessful with getting it sponsored, then we will probably charge $5 a plate for bar-b-que from Wylie's (we can get a heck of a deal from them through Erin knowing the owner). Our goal, regardless, is to get 100 people to the dinner who are willing to listen about and contribute to the walk.
Finally, the professional sales teams, under the leadership of Marcy and Sheryl, will be out in full force within the next week or so. They will be in contact with all of the local doctors and other related professionals. If you know of anyone who would or even might be interested in contributing or pledging to the Walk, I know these ladies will be more than happy to go and speak with them in person. Just go ahead and shoot me an e-mail, and I will be more than happy to forward the information along to them.
That's enough for today. Have a good weekend and let's shatter $2,500 by this time next week!
And as always, if there's anything else I can do for you, let me know.
Expect recovery!

A special thanks goes out to Brad Haymes and his company at Eaton electrical for their in-kind contributions this past week. On Tuesday, Davin Carel and I went to go pick up the following items:
(2) lateral filing cabinets
(3) folding tables
(2) office chairs
(1) computer
and other little odds and ends.
Mr. Haymes and his office were moving and consolidating some of their belongings. We were more than happy to accept the donation and will put them all to good use. In fact, the CNAC met tonight and used one of the tables.
Thanks again Brad.

First off, I wanted to let everyone know that the NAMIWalk sites are back up and running. Not sure what happened over the weekend, but I'm glad it's over. Now that it is, let's get back on track and get some more on-line fundraising done!
Really quick, I got an e-mail from Rex this morning saying he was needing folks to send him their copies of NAMIWalk letters. He wrote me something mentioning that he might have accidentally misplaced a couple, so if everybody could send theirs to him, it would be greatly appreciated.
As most of you know, Rex is helping us with corporate fundraising for NAMIWalks. He has done an excellent job thus far. If we can continue on the path that we are currently on right now and gain support from our professional community and our memberships friends and family, plus what Rex is doing for us, then I think we'll make our $6,000 goal! We're already off to a fantastic start. But remember, everybody will have to do their own little part.
To send your NAMIWalk letters to Rex, e-mail them to rcastle@...
To be honest, I'm not sure what the latest is on the professional letters, so I'll have to get back with some of you on that.
Take care,
Andy Gibson Consumer Network Director NAMI Lubbock (806) 783-9268 (806) 773-7368 http://namilubbock.nami.org
The NAMI Lubbock website has been updated! We finally got ourselves a new FTP server this week, so we didn't waste any time. There you will find some of the following features:
A new affiliate e-mail address namilubbock@... - This will be checked on a regular basis and answered by our affiliate office volunteers. Therefore, if you have any questions and aren't sure who to contact, feel free to contact us here.
Lubbock Legends NAMIWalks Link! Quick link to our Lubbock Legends NAMIWalk page. You will find it at the top of the main page.
Expanded links and information about NAMI CARE, TEAM Solutions, and other NAMI Programs. To find more info about services we offer, links to state and national pages have been provided for your conveinience.
Whatever else we can do to help, please let us know. We will be out of commission a couple of days next week as our NAMI line is moved over to the office and DSL will be installed (finally)!
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear someone finally campaigning for the NCC spot! You already have my vote for both positions.
Although I didn't tell anyone this, I thought about running myself. But when I heard you were running, I decided to do the state a favor and get behind the right person for the job. I can say that, in my opinion, you're the best individual to represent the state of Texas on the national level. Here's some of your qualifications:
NAMI Texas state board member
NAMI CCo board member
Team Solutions trainer
NAMI C.A.R.E. trainer
Live in metro area (Dallas) and are centrally located within the state
You have experience in the field of advocacy
You have worked with other organizations in the past, but aren't in any serious "relationships" with them
You don't have a personal agenda; you want to be a true representative and act as a sounding board on behalf of all consumers from the state of Texas.
You're personality is that of a terrific communicator.
Those are just the a one's I can think off the top of my head. Best of luck to you and know that most, if not all of us up here in the West Texas affiliates feel the same way I do.
Take care and remember everybody, mail-in ballots are due back in to the state office by Thursday, September 15th!
Andy Gibson Consumer Network Director NAMI Lubbock (806) 783-9268 (806) 773-7368 http://namilubbock.nami.org
My name is Alice Clark. I am running for one of the Regional Directors on the NAMI Texas Board of Directors representing Region II. Also, I am one of the candidates who wants to represent us on the NAMI National Consumer Council.
I've served on the BOD, since I stepped in for Cliff Gay when he went to work for NAMI Texas. It's an honor to serve, and I want to hear more of your thoughts and ideas from the NAMI members I represent.
To be honest, I am not, entirely, sure what the job on the NAMI National Consumer Council entails. If you elect me, I promise I will represent NAMI Texas with pride and enthusiasm. It's always confusing when you are voting for candidates you really don't know. I've written many stories about my journey on the road to recovery from Major Depressive Disorder, and I would be happy to send you a copy.
The most important thing is to make sure you do exercise your right to vote. Even if you don't vote for me, it gives you a great feeling when you turn in your ballot. Here's something I wrote last November after I voted in the US General Election. Voting, for me, is part of what RECOVERY means.
After I finished voting last Tuesday, I walked back to the car, got in and drove away. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it.
As I drove away I started to cry. The realization hit me that voting this year was a giant step toward my recovery. Those of you who live with a mental illness will know what I mean. For those of us living on the path to recovery, simple things mean we are one step closer. Voting never meant as much to me as it did last Tuesday.
Sometimes, I ask my son, “How was your day?” He replies, “Oh Mom, it was just an ordinary day.” I always tell him there are a lot of people who would give anything for - just an ordinary day. For me, Tuesday was just an ordinary day. HOW GLORIOUS.
Howdy West Texas NAMI affiliate and consumer leaders,
This e-mail is to inform you that NAMI Lubbock will be sponsoring a regional training for the newly revised consumer education course, Texas Team Solutions on October 15th. The training will begin at 10 am and will more than likely end around 5 pm. The location has yet to be determined, but it will more than likely be at the LRMHMR center on 10th St. and Avenue 0 near downtown. Cliff Gay, Consumer Network Coordinator with NAMI Texas, will be coming in from Austin to perform the training.
For those of you who do not know alot about Team Solutions, it is an excellent product and is the official consumer education course for NAMI Texas. I have personally taught TS within NAMI Lubbock since 2002 and it has been both a blessing and a learning experience. Recently, the cirriculum went through a re-write which made it more flexible as well as incorporated some of the TIMA cirriculum in with it as well. For more information about Texas Team Solutions, you may click here.
There will be limited number a people allowed at the training and 12 is usually the absolute maximum number. I have at least 6 folks in Lubbock that are going to apply for training spots. Therefore, if you and your affiliate would be interested, contact me immediately via e-mail or at any of the information below and I and/or Cliff Gay will send you and/or your affilate the necessary paperwork to apply.

I have about 50 or so blank thank-you notes I am donating for NAMIWalks - so you will be able to thank those who sponsor you. I will put them in the NAMI Office so you can pick up a handful if you need them. Please send a note or letter of gratitude to those who donate to our Walk because 90% of the raised money will stay in Lubbock!
I am writing you today to tell you about an upcoming event that I am participating in that is both very important and very exciting to me. It is NAMIWalks for the Mind of America, NAMI's signature walkathon event that is being held in Austin, TX on October 2nd, 2005.
[**Insert a paragraph here about how and why you're particpating (i.e. for a family member, friend, for your company etc.).****]
I would like to ask you to donate to support my affiliate's participation in this great event. Visit our affiliate's team webpage at: http://www.nami.org/namiwalks05/TEX/namilubbock. It features links to some of the walker's pages where you can see who will be representing "The Lubbock Legends." There is also a link so you can donate directly to the team or your favorite walker(s) online. Donating online is fast and secure, and they'll get immediate notification via e-mail of your donation. If you would prefer to send a check, you may do so by making it out to NAMI Texas/NAMIWalk and sending it to me in the mail.
NAMI, the Nation's Voice on Mental Illness, formerly the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, is the largest education, support and advocacy organization that serves the needs of all those who's lives are touched by these illnesses. This includes persons with mental illness, their families, friends, employers, the law enforcement community and policy makers. The NAMI organization is composed of approximately 1100 local affiliates, 50 state offices and a national office.
The goals of the NAMIWalks program are: to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness, to build awareness of the fact that the mental health system in this country needs to be improved and to raise funds for NAMI so that they can continue their mission.
NAMI is a 501(c)3 charity and any donation you make to support my participation in this event is tax deductible. NAMI has been rated by Worth magazine as among the top 100 charities "most likely to save the world" and has been given an "A+" rating by The American Institute of Philanthropy for efficient and effective use of charitable dollars. NAMI has also been given 4 out of 4 stars by The Charity Navigator for short-term spending practices and long-term sustainability.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
(Your name)

For those of you who are interested in donating to NAMIWalks, but want to do it simply and securely, I have some good news. Just click on the link below.
This will be our official NAMI "Lubbock Legends" NAMIWalk page. Watch us as we track funding, count down the days to the walk, and share our stories of recovery in the process. If you would like to sign-up for the walk and join us in Austin you can do that on this site as well. You will also find the links to the webpages of "Legends" team members and can donate to them on-line as well. All money that is raised by the individual goes to the team at the end and 90% of all funds will come back to the local affiliate (NAMI Lubbock).
So whenever you have a few minutes, take a couple minutes to read through everything. You'll be glad you did. And pass this e.mail on to others who might find this of interest.
Thanks for your time and remember.....EXPECT RECOVERY!

The latest on the board meeting is that unfortunately, we were unsucessful in getting anyone to help us out with supplying it for us. My apologies. I was told by the drug companies (that returned my phone calls) that at this point in time, they could not supply a meal unless either 1) a doctor was coming to speak to us or 2) someone from their company was coming to speak to us about their drug. At least that's what Janssen said. I also contacted MHMR to see if they would go 50/50 with us, but due to it being the end of their fiscal year, things are pretty tight with them. That's understandable.
Right now, I'm thinking of doing pizza from Orlando's, which is across the street. However, I will let everyone know for sure what we're doing on Tuesday night.
If everyone would do me a favor, please RSVP by calling the NAMI Line at 783-9268.
Main things to be discussed at this board meeting, to my knowledge, is the future of the affiliate office and about our role in the Austin NAMIWalk on October 2nd.
Finally, in honor of the Solutions for Wellness class that will be taking place on Tuesday nights throughout the month of August, Dr. Ann Thompson has been asked to come speak at our August monthly meeting. Decision is pending (she's out of town). Dr. Thompson is a local nutritionist and has spoken at our meetings before.
See everyone on Tuesday!
