To the NAMI Lubbock Egroup,
I had lunch with Dr. Malek-Ahmadi last week to discuss the possibility of the West Texas Chapter of the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians and NAMI Lubbock working together to have some events during Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) October 1-7. He is particularly interested in us doing a panel discussion on MI issues on October 2. We have decided to have a panel of doctors and perhaps Sheriff Gutierrez on this panel which I will moderate. I would like as many NAMI members there as possible especially the education and support facilitators so I can introduce you and have you for a reference for questions posed in that direction. Dr. MA has already received conformations from Drs. Davidson, Cobb, Robinson and Patel to be on the panel. We are trying to decide on a "neutral location" for the panel. We would like to avoid the med school, a church or MHMR as a location since those locations tend to bother some people. If you have any input, please let me know. I know we will want as many of our professional members and friends there also as well as the press. I plan on asking MHMR to co-sponsor with us also. Dr. MA applied for a grant for literature for this event so we can do mailouts etc. We need our display board bought and prepared for this so the board needs to ok that once we have a idea what it costs. We need help and ideas for this event too. Dr. MA and I also want to have a video presentation of "Shadow Voices" on Thursday night and this would be a good time for the candlelight vigil for those who have died in their battle with MI. I don't know how we get names for that but we need to figure it out. We are planning on a busy week so let me know if you can help.
