Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a common term for adult onset communicating hydrocephalus.

Typically, cerebrospinal fluid flows into and out of the brain, with the brain absorbing a certain percentage of fluid. In NPH the fluid is not blocked from flowing through the brain, but a diminished ability to absorb fluid causes the ventricles to become enlarged. NPH usually is diagnosed in men or women over 55, with the median age in the mid-70's. This group is listed in the Yahoo!Groups directory under SENIOR HEALTH.

The TRIAD of symptoms for NPH is: (1) Gait Disturbance, including balance problems, shuffling walk (often described as a feeling of the feet being stuck to the floor), sudden falls; (2) Urinary Urgency or Incontinence, (3) Short term memory loss/dementia.
