Our STICU was designed with the universal bed concept, then our units merged and
the patient population became a mixed population. The universal bed concept did
not thrive in our units and we still struggle with it. Research carefully if
you are headed that direction. Philosophically and theoretically the universal
bed is the right thing to do for our patients, in practicality, it poses many
