Hello All,
Finally have enough time to chime in! First, I'd like to note the difference between early detection and prevention.. mainstream medicine seems to consider them to be synonyms. I don't see the vigilant watch for disease symptoms/signs as "prevention" any more than I see scanning the skies with radar looking for a missile in flight to be prevention. Going over and making the potential missile launcher your friend is prevention, just as changing the mileu (sp?) to one which supports and promotes health is preventative.
Not surprisingly, most of the things one does to heal will also prevent if continued on a long term basis. This is a realization I had a long time ago in the world of sports rehab- the same exercises that I used to get athletes back on the field would keep them from suffering non-impact injuries if they'd just do them periodically throughout
the year. For some reason no one was making that connection. That's changing slowly and I hope that trend will carry over into general health/wellness programs.
So, in my opinion, how we practice prevention with our patients is by practicing good ole naturopathy. Teach them to be kind to themselves, inside and out; interact with the environment (and everything/one in it) in a healthy, loving way; feed their bodies, souls, and spirits things which enrich them; address the concerns which brought them to the office and be a docere while you do it. Prevention is just one of the many unfortunate side effects of good naturopathic medicine, please consult your physician before beginning a naturopathic treatment plan!
Thanks y'all.

Hi Amy,
I think it means both, and more.
My understanding is that there are various levels of prevention, ranging from the conventional medical approach which is disease-focused (mammograms, prostrate screening exams, prescribing a small dose of aspirin every day, etc) up through to naturopathic prevention which includes screening but widens way out to include health maintenance, and health/wellness promotion/cultivation, for patients, the community, for the whole planet, for all beings.
(What's the widest context you can imagine? Whatever it is, that's what I would consider the naturopathic context & our "home")
There's a lot more detail that we could go into about this if you like.
warm regards,
Christy

you think this means?
Is prevention the promotion of healthy living to prevent the
recurrence of disease in the sick, helping healthy patients maintain
optimal health and prevent the occurrence of disease, both or neither?
