Hi William.
I'd say that the vis is always operational irregardaless of the values of the vitality of any system. the good news about that is that we can always make a system more vital and the healing power of nature can use that value.
The vis is a mystical because amazing healings can occur without us knowing exactly how they occurred. We have faith in the exisatnce of these amazingly complicated interractions of various aspects of the vital force. The healing power of nature (the vis) is everpresent. E=mC2 sits there irregardless of whether we plug in any values or not. The equation describes the relationship between energy, mass and the speed of light.
The vis sits there as an eternal and evolving expression of the interaction of all aspects of healing; mental, physical and spiritual.

Hello y'all,I've been mulling this over and have some questions. Thanks Bill for the essay, I remember you describing it this way at the Gathering last year and thought it made a lot of sense. Now, however, I'm feeling a little stuck as, from my student's very limited perspective it appears to contradict the way we (naturopathic students) are being taught to view/use the Vis (or maybe "animus" is a closer translation?). Namely, we are taught to recognize/acknowled ge the existence and constant action of this impartial algebraic formula- to use your analogy- we call the Vis. In the Therapeutic Order we are called upon to stimulate it and it is suggested that certain modalities are "good at this" while others work on some other level. The idea that some modalities of healing work with the Vis while others may oppose or remain impartial to it doesn't really make sense to me... but that is a different rabbit to chase at another time. My main question, and I have many, right now I guess is this... if the Vis is the formula in which all this "stuff" we observe as healing (and "not healing"- is that possible?) takes place, how does one go about stimulating it.. or not? When I change the value for "A" in the formula "A + B = C" am I stimulating the formula? or am I merely participating in it?If the Vis is best seen as the formula then I don't understand how we can "stimulate" it. We can only change the values for some of the elements, teach the client to change the values for others and know that the formula is going to work as it is designed.. the outcome being more predictable based on the more values we "know". The more unknowns in the formula, the more unpredictable the outcome.Maybe I just answered my own question, we stimulate the vital force, which Bill describes as an element within the formula we call the Vis, not the Vis itself. Maybe? Kudos to anyone who can even follow this ramble, and many thanks to any feedback to help me sort it out!Gassho,William FranklinSCNM studentWilliam Mitchell <billmitchellnd@hotmail.com> wrote:Hi Kim,thanks for your interest in the Vis. In re to what is the vis.... I love it, Dr. Z, that you are asking! Thanks for being that role model of continuous expansion of understanding.
I think of the vis as intelligence, something that was/is there before anything is manifest. And benevolence is always associated with it as well. But it's always a challenge to me to explain it to other people, especially those who are on a fairly concrete level of thinking. So, I really enjoyed the interview I just recently read with Bill Mitchell in the Unified Energetics magazine (summer 2006, I think, I'm a little behind in my reading!).... I know you said, Bill, that you were revisiting your definition and I wonder if it's an expansion on that interview, or if you've gone a different route....
But, for those who may have missed this interview, if I may paraphrase, Dr. M suggests the vis is like a formula -- we all remember algebra, right? The formula is always there and the same. What changes are the numbers we put into the formula. And so the "numbers" that we put into the formula -- diet, lifestyle, exercise, genetics, etc. -- affect the outcome/manifestation of the vis. For me, this is another analogy I can tuck away to use with patients to help them understand not only what the vis is, but how they can be responsible for its best function.
Best to all for a wonderful 2007.

To accept everything that comes, and everything that is given, as coming from that same spiritual source." --Marcus Aurelius____________
