hello, have been thinking about all of you lately and wondering how
everyone is doing. i enjoyed seeing everyone at the last gathering and
have been looking forward to seeing all again soon. i will not be able
to attend all of the session, as i was awarded a scholarship to summer
school in wilmington which is during the same week, but i plan to come
friday afternoon. it was a tough decision for me to go to summer
school and miss part of our time together, but it was a deal too good
to pass up. as for me, well, it the beginning of the new fiscal year
and we have many changes in the processes at smoky mtn ctr, so...all
i'm doing is livin' and learnin'!!!

suzanne, good luck with your new job. i know how difficult it can be
to leave a job to start a new position. there certainly can be alot of
grief. i encourage you to take good care of yourself.
ollie, haven't heard from you. hope you are well. looking forward to
hearing from you soon.
jeff, what a bummer with you vehicle. sounds like you are up and
raring to go again. looking forward to seeing you soon.
hope you all are well. see you soon.

hey, good to hear from you. glad the chicken pox are over, but sorry to hear of the residuals of bell's palsy/lyme's disease. looking forward to seeing everyone in aug. take care and will talk with you all soon.

Delzora M. Clark wrote:
Greetings everyone:

Wow!  The group is quiet.  It must be the summer.  I'm still trying
to make sure that everyone joins the group.  I'll scan tonight and
re-invite them.

Here's an update on me.  I missed seeing everyone.  The first hotel
stay and I missed it.  LOL   I wonder what everyone did.  I hated
not being able to see the difference in personalities of being in
the mountains versus being in the RTP. LOL

My daughter had the chicken pox (you all know that I believe).  That
seems innocent enough but she has developed a bit of Bell's palsy-
like symptoms on her face.  We just found this out today.  I knew
something was wrong because her face didn't work like that before
the chicken pox.  The doctor is also treating for her Lyme's disease
while we wait for results.  I'm sharing, well, just because I
haven't shared with the group recently and also to tell everyone to
make sure that they are aware of the complications from "everyday"
diseases, plus how ticks can effect you.  I can't say that a tick
bit her but she hangs outside a lot.  Just because I never saw
evidence of a tick bite doesn't mean much especially with all the
bumps going on with her anyway.  LOL

Anyway, take care, be safe and I'll see you soon.

Peace and blessings,

Delzora

In reading Jim's email (yes I had to read it and think about it) LOL
Just
how many Eagles were there? I THINK I remember two of our members who
went
to NCCU. Now, I didn't but I'm an Eagle now - the high school where I
work
has the Eagles as their mascot as well. Does that count? LOL
Thanks for asking Jim - it seems that we're the only two on the list.
LOL
Gabby is doing better. I hope that all is well with your family.
  Take care all.

Hello!

I too have been very delinquent in utilizing this email resource. And
have found I no longer have a valid email with Yahoo, but it will not
let me reactivate the one I have had. So I am trying the reply to all
to see if it will go through from my work email address.

A lot has happened since we left Durham. I did decide finally to accept
the position with the LME in Provider Relations. My staff was very
supportive and I spent about two weeks trying to make arrangements as to
how they could maintain their positions with Eastpointe and not get
contracted out. But to no avail. We are currently pursuing a
contractor for the Majors program and my staff are really ok with it.
They are willing to consider the contract option once we have a package
to put on the table, but have also agreed to function in other
capacities, as Eastpointe is not fully divested.

This has made my heart a great deal lighter. I now am able to recognize
that the sorrow and grief I was feeling at the last session was not just
for my staff but for the grief I was to feel over leaving a job of 13+
years and the kids and staff I was so committed to at the Youth
Development Center. My Last Management Team at Dobbs was pretty tearful
for me, but cathartic and much needed.

We had to shut down the Dobbs YDC SA Program, which meant we had to
move...... Not a fun thing in the summer. Very hot here! Lots of dust,
deed bugs, and memories. But I have thrown out a lot that I have
accumulated over the years. I am now located at Eastpointe Lenoir in a
nice office, all by myself! Hard to adjust to as I have shared and
office for 13 years with at least 3-5 other people. Now when I talk out
loud, no one is there to respond or to help me remember anything! This
will take a great deal of adjustment for such an extroverted person as I
am.

I started my new job Friday and have found that I am going to be a busy
beaver with the endorsement process. If any of you are planning to go
through endorsement for Medicaid thru your local LME, DO NOT
PROCRASTINATE! It is a lengthy process with all kinds of deadlines.
Good Luck!

My daughter just returned from her two week trip to Yosemite and San
Francisco with the People to People Student Ambassador Program. I was a
basket case putting her on the plane! She did well and has come home a
different child (very different). So independent and active. But it
seems to be wearing off and the sleeping is increasing! Have just sent
pictures off for developing and hope to share some with you when they
return (if they are any good!):).

Delzora, I am distressed that our experience with Chicken Pox has turned
out as it has. I have had 2 friends who have dealt with Bell's and it
was short lived. So I will pray that it subsides by the time school
resumes! Such an inconvenience, I know. The hotel was nice, but we
were so busy we really didn't get to experience hotel life to any
extent! So don't feel that you missed anything in that arena! But the
groups were good. Can't wait to get your input in the remaining groups!
It was definitely different with out you there!

Jeff, I am glad to hear that you are so upbeat and positive about
missing the last meeting! I know that must have been very frustrating.
I probably would have had a nervous breakdown along with the car
breakdown. I have a hard time with not being able to accomplish what I
set out to do sometimes! Can't wait to see you again and hear your
input in group as well. They are really getting juicy and yet
productive!

To everyone else, I hope you are having a great summer! I personally
have been trying to spend a lot of time at the pool! Can't wait to see
you all in Raleigh, wherever we will meet!?

Suzanne :)

Class of 2005,

I've been attempting to email you since our session at
the beginning of June. I still have the material I
promised to you.

The afternoon of our session, I went to see the movie
"CRASH". It was very good and dealt with many of the
issues from the training session. When you get the
opportunity, I suggest you see it. Keep in touch.

Take care.

Brenden

Let's keep the egroup going. I even noticed that we have three new

as of today. Yeah! This is finally working. LOL Ok, why has it taken us
half

I appreciate the support about my daughter. It has been quite a summer.

Suzanne, I'd heard of Bell's Palsy, but of course never thought for a

Hello everyone!  I apologize for being slack about this board lately.
There has been a lot going on.  I'm also still trying to figure out
how the yahoo boards work, as I rarely use them.  (Any tips would be
greatly appreciated!)  Here's just a quick note to check in with folks.

Delzora, I too missed the last Fellows meeting.  My transmission went
out half way between here and there.  It was also a pretty bad week in
general.  Things are looking better now.

Jim, I received the packet you sent the week before last.  Thanks for
your kind words of encouragement!  I noticed that you still had my old
address on file though and wanted to update everyone on the change.
It's…

Jeff Jaworski
PO BOX 1639
Manteo, NC 27954

I also have not seen anything from Brenden Hargett.  I'm assuming that
this may be due to the fact that I was not there.  Please feel free to
pass along my contact information.

Sondra, Tony and Malcolm, I hope all of you are doing well with our
assignment of keeping in touch.  I'll try to e-mail each of you
individually to catch up.

Henry, I hope things are going well for you at DART.  I was there a
few weeks ago to catch up with John and Mike.  Next time I'm in that
area I'll give you a call if that is ok with you?

Ollie, I feel your pain of looking for referral sources.  I have been
through some similar struggles over the past couple of weeks.  I hope
everything worked out for you.

I hope everyone else is doing well and look forward to hearing from
you.  I'll be in Charlotte the 8th and 9th of this month if anyone
wants to get together for lunch on that Friday.  I hope everyone has a
fun and safe holiday!

Jeff

Delzora, great to hear from you. I really missed you at the last gathering.
Seems strange to  me to see that many "Eagles" in one place. What a wonderful bunch of folks, I feel so honored to be among you guys.

Do hope things are working out well on the home front, daughter healing and your heart happy!

Have a wonderful and safe Independence Day Celebration! A friend of mine once advised me that "to be safe on the fourth, don't buy a fifth on the third" and that seems to continue to be a great idea.

It's a beautiful morning in the mountains and I hope it is where you are.

Warmly,

Jim

Hi Delzora and all...
Thanks for writing Delzora and for your work to unite us all via our internet system.  It is so important that everyone signs up and uses this system,...we are missing a lot by not using it.  Brenden Hargett who led a sessiion on cultural competency at TROSA last session has been wanting to be in touch with you all but has been discouraged because no one is answering him....SO....get on board!!

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoys this 4th of July weekend.  Be safe.  Take care of yourselves so you can better serve others.  Know you are special!

Love to all....Jim

Delzora

Faces & Voices of Recovery
2005 Rising! Recovery in Action Summit

Raise your voice in the nation’s capitol and experience being part of building our national movement.

  • Take home new skills and tools that you can use in your community

  • Put your advocacy into practice and be inspired to take the next steps

Together we will continue to build a national, unified voice that is heard in Washington and around the country! Winning Recovery Advocacy Strategies & Tactics

I call on you today to be the national voice for recovery. Be a community of one, unified, to be a powerful voice in our nation’s capital and in the states.
-- The late Senator Paul Wellstone at Faces & Voices of Recovery’s 2001 Summit.

Successful local campaigns build our national recovery advocacy movement and strengthen recovery community organizations. Wellstone Action (www.wellstoneaction.org) takes you through the steps of planning a campaign, getting out your message, and building alliances to mobilize greater support for recovery. There will be lots of fun “hands-on” practice like actually staging a press conference and developing a public service television ad. You will work in small teams in this action-oriented strategic planning and skill building session, working on real issues. At the end of this empowering day, you will be able to take these strategies home and immediately apply them in your community.

Just wanted to say Hi to everyone, now that I finally made it into
this
group. Suzanne congratulations, that is too wonderful. Maybe next
group you can offer a tutorial about how to pass the CCS.
I am adjusting to my new job and I think that I am really going to

it except I really miss working in a substance abuse specific agency.
As for slowing down- I must be crazy because we just brought home two
Jack Russell Terrior Puppies.
Cant wait to see you guys soon.

Congratulations!!! What you will do is have an opportunity to teach
many people what how to survive and enjoy this field. I have too many
request for supervision. I have a person in Boone and places that I
can' properly supervise because of the distance. There were several
request from that area in the past year or two. Rejoice in the work
you have done. It is special, when you are truly professional. You
have taken your professionlism to another level.

To the 2005 Fellows --

I really enjoyed our past weekend. Hope everyone is
doing well. I'm sending this note to let you all know
about a great conference May 16-20 here in western
North Carolina called "Addiction: Focus on Women". If
you work with women dealing with addiction and
recovery, then I hope you will consider attending.

I will cut and paste the press release to the end of
this message. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hope to see some of you there!

Brenda Carleton

PRESS RELEASE:
Conference Addresses Needs and Concerns of Substance
Abusing Women and Their Families

With a theme of “The Circle of Caring: From Self to
Others,” MAHEC’s 19th Annual Addiction: Focus on Women
Conference will be held at the Kanuga Conference
Center near Hendersonville May 16 – 20, 2005. The
conference serves to educate professionals and the
general public about the special needs and concerns of
substance abusing women and their families.
Healthcare professionals come to share their knowledge
and learn effective ways to work with women. Women
who may be in the recovery process themselves come to
learn, heal and share. Everyone comes with questions
to be answered.

The social crisis of women with addictions is
widespread and complex. Rev. Dr. Renita Weems, an
acclaimed public speaker and author, describes
addiction in the following way.

“It wants your soul,” she says, “but it will settle
for now with your sanity. It wants your hope, but it
will settle for your family. It wants your joy, but
it will settle for your job. It wants your faith, but
it will settle for your health. It is a spirit with a
memory and it preys across generations of families.
It does not want the addict; it wants the family, the
community, the nation.”

Each year MAHEC collaborates with individuals, groups
and agencies to develop a conference that focuses on
early identification of and intervention with women at
risk of addiction and its related complications. The
result is an annual conference that brings together
experts from across the nation. The conference seeks
to explore a host of paradigms to help women revive a
sense of self in the face of spiritual poverty.

National presenters are recruited to address the
latest research and clinical issues and this year the
conference is fortunate to have Francine Ward, JD,
giving a keynote address on self-esteem. Some people
believe you get self-esteem from your parents. Others
believe you get it by having the biggest house,
driving the coolest car, or by having the most
academic degrees. And still other people believe
self-esteem is a result of repeating mantras and
affirmations in the mirror. While any one of these
things may help you feel good about yourself
temporarily, what works in the long term is a
conscious, consistently, daily practice of action,
designed to get you off the couch and into your life
by encouraging you to walk through your fear and take
responsibility for the choices you make. Francine will
help participants discover specific actions for
building sustainable self-esteem, obstacles that get
in the way, and a plan for getting started.

Rokelle Lerner, another keynote speaker, will speak on
Empathy, Stress and Compassion Fatigue: Regaining Joy
in Our Lives. Compassion fatigue is often diagnosed
as post secondary PTSD. When the level of acuity of
patients is continually high, therapists can absorb
the trauma in ways that bleed over into their personal
lives. In addition, this can diminish their efficacy
in their work with others. Rokelle’s session will
demonstrate methods to counteract compassion fatigue
and show how to maintain vision, purpose and balance
in life.

Also on the agenda is Pegine Echeverria. Pegine
speaks to thousands of people yearning to be strong
leaders who make a difference in their own life, work,
family and community while laughing and participating
with others. She is an author, speaker and stand-up
comedian on life and business.

Two registration options are available for the
conference and costs vary. Please call (828) 257-4481
for more information or go to our website at
www.mtn.ncahec.org to view a full conference brochure.
