Howdy all....
Well I am still on Medical Leave of Absence from the mounted patrol.
For those who weren't aware, I had heart surgery done the beginning
of June. I had a hole in my heart bigger than a nickel. I had to
have an amplatzer device installed to close the hole up.
It will be a good 4-6 months before I am allowed to return. Very
frustrating!
I hope everyone is doing good, and enjoying this lovely summer we are
having.
We are still working on when to have a MFR class. My husband is
still in Afghanistan and doesn't look he will get to return till
2010. So thinking the class will be then, since he is the instructor!
I would like to see this group grow. I know there is a need for us.
As many of the mounted patrols don't actually do SAR. They like
to "practice" and do things when convenient.
I would like to get a real horseback SAR/EMS group started in
Michigan and other states. There is a real need for folks to know
exactly what to do in an emergency. Too many folks out in the woods
don't know basic first aid and many times move a victim. We need to
get word out, and educate our friends, neighbors, family,
etc...please do not move a victim!!!! I have seen it happen a
couple times already this year.
Ok...enough soapbox talk.
We need more photos of members and their horses!
Glad to be back online! Missed you all.
Linda
I don't know Dr. Main very well but he actually comes highly recommended on Dobe ears and did a nice job otherwise I wouldn't have driven so far but I do respect your opinion.
Hey, you and I are the same age. The training would be of great value not only to us but to people and thier mounts who may become injured. Sorry to hear that your husband is away, I'm sure it's difficult for you. Well, take care and I hope to talk to you soon.

Yes that is me with my mare Precious, she is actually a dark buckskin, the pic doesn't do her justice. I use Allegan Veterinary clinic which is downtown Allegan, Allegan Animal clinic is south of town and that is Dr Main, which I will not comment on ..lol..
I am also on the Allegan County Mounted Patrol, I am 40, will be 41 in August. Licensed EMT and dispatcher, but chose to be a stay at home EMT. My husband is in Afghanistan working as a Remote Tactical Medic for the State Dept.
I am hoping to organize some wilderness training this year at Ionia State Park, it is a very nice park and has a good place to practice water rescues, and wilderness rescues.
I wish my husband would be here as he is a licensed Instructor and the hours would be good for CEU's for those in EMS and Nursing. But he will be in Afghanistan so I will be doing the teaching. Biggest thing we hope to do is safety training when approaching a equine related situation. How to not only treat the patient but the horse as well if it has sustained injuries. How to get both out of the woods safely.
Of course the training will be open to anyone involved with search and rescue or EMS, or equine activities. Plus hope to have entertainment and stuff too.
We shall see.
If you have any friends who are in EMS and have horses feel free to get them to sign up. I am
hoping once we reach 20 or more members to get us recognized as a National Group.

That would be great! Is that you in the picture with the big bay? Nice horse. I was in Allegan a few times in the fall getting our Dobermans ears done at Allegan Animal Hospital. Before that I had no idea where Allegan was. I will post some pictures for you to see.
Thanks again and I'm looking forward to riding with you this summer.

Welcome to the group! I live in Allegan, we will have to get together this summer and go riding. Thank you for joining. For the most part this is a young group, starting out, and we hope to grow more in 2007. Please feel free to share any time you feel like. Would love to see pics of horses and stuff.

Hi everyone,
I am a divorced 40yof with a 9 year old daughter that loves to ride. We
live about 20 or so miles from Jackson and have 6 horses. Most of our
horses are Quarters, that is the breed of choice around here. I am an
RN and looking forward to finding out more about this group and meeting
new horsey friends.
Chris
I am hoping we can get this group growing. Please invite those you
know who are in EMS or Search & Rescue and have horses, mules,
zorses, etc. We don't discriminate against any equine..lol..
I am going to try and get my husband to schedule a class in 2007 or
2008 for a Medical First Responder class. We will also provide
wilderness training as well with the course.
My husband is a licensed Tactical Paramedic as well as Critical Care
trained, and a Licensed IC (EMS instructor). In order to do be an
EMS equestrian you should be a medical first responder. There are
classes in almost every state for this. If you can't get the MFR
class, we at least want you to be trained in CPR by the American
Heart Association, as well as take a basic first aid class.
We are hoping to form the National Association of EMS equestrians
and make it a recognized association. We are small yet, and word is
just now getting out.
I think it is important we organize and we can provide an important
service in search & rescue.
Please pass the word on!

Ps also, we will be working on a NAEMS Equestrians Tshirt and Ball
caps, and mugs. Still working on the Logo, trying to get it just
right. These items will be for sale at a reduced rate to our yahoo
group members.
The Gypsies TRULY become a part of your family and win your hearts very
quickly. They have personalities uncommon for the common horse. We breed
for hobby and possible retirement supplement. Not a large operation. My
ideal herd will be only 3 to 5 mares and our one stallion.
If you ever have need, our stallion is available for stud. I will be
getting his complete physical next spring so all offspring can be
registered with the US Societies.
We are just getting into this. I am anxious to get my mare started in more
in-depth dressage training (limited, of course, by her pregnancy size) and
our medieval gaming. They are also supposed to be fast horses; we'll see.
Nice to meet you.

Welcome Tracy, this is a young group meaning not many here yet, but the ones already here are wonderful folks! I hope we can get the word out so we can network together and share info, EMS stories, horse stories, even family stories!
I love Gypsy Cobs. I have been looking at some Piebald Cobs in Scotland, and may possibly be importing a few next spring. I fell in love with them when I went to the Island of Mull on vacation in Scotland last year. My hubby and I are both part Scottish so it was fun to go check out our heritage and see where my great great great great great great grandfather Rob Roy MacGregor was laid to rest.
We even rode the Appaloosas of Ardfernne which was fun, but I fell in love with those colorful cobs with their long
flowing feathers!!! I was awestruck and I was shocked at how cheap they are over there!!! It is just the importing to the states that is outrageous!
Hi, all.
I am Tracy. I live in northeast Kansas and breed Gypsy Cobs. I am the
supervisor of the billing office of a large medical practice. I have been
trying to become part of a mounted search and rescue group for several
years but there is nothing close to me. I have recently learned of a group
trying to form in the Kansas City area (about 2 hours away) that I may be
able to do some training with.
For fun with my ponies I have done competitive trail and have been part of
a medieval recreation group. We do all sorts of medievel horseback gaming.

Hi All - I was thrilled to be able to join this group!!Thank You!!
My name is Mary, and I live in SW Michigan.I'm 53 yrs young, and
single. I have a Paint & QH breeding farm, and breed/raise
Foundation Paints & QH. I also teach riding lessons, and board
horses on a limited basis. I have been involved with horses/training/
4-H /showing/rodeo/and trail riding for almost 40 yrs now.
I am a Certified Respiratory Therapist and have worked in hospitals
and health care institutions most of my adult life. I am presently
working at 2 Hospitals in SW Michigan, and spend most of my time in
the Emergency Deptartment of a mid-sized hospital on the Lk.
Michigan Shoreline. I have a pretty good background in critical
care/intubation/CPR/phelbotomy, and First aid of all types.
I have done a small amount of search on horseback when asked by our
local Sherrif Dept. and found it to be quite gratifying. I want to
learn much more about rescue---as my background is clinical, and I
do realize everything changes when your out 20 miles from the
nearest hospital/X-ray/Wall O2/suction/etc.!!
I have also read alot of articals on recent disasters and the muscle
and man power it takes to recover horses and other farm animals
after these disasters, and would like input from anyone who has
formed or helped form an emergency preparedness plan for thier
county in regard to rescue of these animals. I am pushing in our
County for such a program, but so far all I've gotten is a nod and a
shrug-LOL!!
Again--Thanks for letting me join--I hope I can be of assistance to
you in answering questions about Horses or RT, and can feel free to
ask questions too.
Thanks Much, Mary
So lets get some introductions going. We are a small group but
growing. Our hope is to eventually form a National Equestrian Search
& Rescue Group. The word needs to get out. This is a good forum to
express ideas, how to organize etc. We also can talk about anything
horse related of course as well as Emergency Medical Care procedures,
etc. Jump on in.
My name is Linda, I am the group owner/moderator. I am a licensed EMT
basic, currently in the process of getting on with our local mounted
patrol, I am married to a wonderful Critical Care Paramedic who is
over in Afghanistan doing his duty there.
We currently have 5 horses, but hope to get down to 2 or 3 soon.
Welcome to the new members...jump on in!

SHI was accidentally started with the theft of our horse Idaho in 1997. At that time we found no help of any kind on the Internet. We will be instructing on how to stablize a patient in a wilderness environment, providing a safe extrication (removing out of woods). Different things you can use in the woods to provide stabilization of

There is a wonderful book you can buy at Amazon.com that is called Wilderness medicine. It is geared towards those who do not have a medical certification.
I know this group says National Association of EMS equestrians, even though you may not be certified in EMS, we will teach you the basics to provide practical basic first aid in a wilderness environment. Hopefully touching on subjects you haven't worked on before.

Hello,
My name is Jane (WildfireJane) and my husband and I are members of the

We mostly ride in parades doing precisian drills and PR for the
Sheriff. We aren't trained in search and rescue but I would like to be
